Auckland’s Cafe-Lovers To Choose Cafes with a ‘Clear Conscience.’

For those diners who are keen to support cafes that are truly committed to environmentally sound and socially responsible practices for their businesses, Conscious Consumers was launched in Auckland this week.   The award-winning community-initiative has been created to make it simpler for Auckland’s Cafe-Lovers To Choose Cafes with a ‘Clear Conscience.’

The Conscious Consumers cafe project is not-for-profit, and has been successfully operating in Wellington for the last year. Now the Auckland Council is supporting its launch in Auckland alongside 18 cafes in Auckland’s central city suburbs that have already signed up to the project.

The Scout-inspired badges recognise a cafe’s commitment to sustainable business practices. These Awards, or ‘Badges’ are displayed inside the cafe’s front window, which communicates the range of practices employed to customers.  For example, certified fairtrade coffee, free-range eggs, composting foodscraps or committed use of  seasonal produce.   www.consciousconsumers.org.nz.

National Co-ordinator Ben Gleisner says the Conscious Consumers cafe project empowers customers to make informed purchasing choices and incentivises cafes to commit to waste minimisation and other business practices with positive outcomes.

“We believe the nine cafe-specific business practices promoted by Conscious Consumers make good business sense, respect people and the environment, and reflect current consumer preferences.

“Ultimately it’s about enabling a connection between conscious consumers and like-minded cafes in the community. As we’ve already shown in Wellington it successfully demonstrates how ethical choices can be good for business, ” he says of the project, which recently won a 2011 Ministry for the Environment Green Ribbon Award and is set to expand into the Waikato region in August.

Auckland Co-ordinator Nadine Wakim says she is excited about establishing Conscious Consumers in Auckland with support from Auckland Council, business associations, suppliers, local cafes and a growing base of ‘conscious’ consumers.

“Based on the excellent response we’ve had from cafes that have joined the project so far we’re certainly off to a great start and I look forward to expanding the number of ‘conscious’ cafes in the region and promoting them to Aucklanders and visitors to our city!”

Angie Redfern, of Ripe Deli in Ponsonby, was one of the first cafe owners in Auckland to sign up to Conscious Consumers. “It’s great firstly for a business to be acknowledged for its environmental efforts, as often businesses are taking a risk with increased costs so they can follow their values, and secondly, it increases awareness for everyone. So goodness all round!” she says.

Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards 2011 Finalists

It’s an exciting time to be eating out in New Zealand, as evidenced by the Top 50 finalists in this year’s Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards.
In a departure from previous years, Cuisine magazine has hand-picked its Top 50 rather than taken entries, and the magazine’s editor, Sarah Nicholson, says the number of first-time finalists on the list is an indication of how strong the country’s restaurant scene has become.
“The Top 50 finalists are a good-news story for our country’s dining scene; our judges have been hugely impressed by the standard of restaurants in both the main centres and regionally.
As we look towards the Rugby World Cup, it’s great to see that there are so many places that can showcase the best of New Zealand food and wine and hold their own on the world stage,” she says.
Now in its seventh year, the Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards, proudly supported by Mercedes-Benz, is the only national restaurant competition in New Zealand.
Kerry Tyack, who is regarded as one of the country’s most experienced food and restaurant judges, returns as head judge for the 2011 awards. He says that while compiling the Top 50 was tough, the judging panel was confident that the list represented the best of New Zealand dining, spanning everything from fine-diners to local bistros.
“The Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards continue to highlight great dining throughout the country,” he says. “As well as a number of exciting new finalists in Auckland and Wellington, it’s fantastic to see first-time appearances on the list in Hamilton, Nelson, Canterbury and Otago.”
Two Christchurch restaurants, Pescatore and Edesia, are also included in the Top 50.
Pescatore has previously been a finalist while Edesia is a newcomer to the list.
“We’re thrilled that after all that Christchurch has been through, it still has restaurants of this high standard following the February quake. It’s a testament to the strength of the city’s dining scene and we look forward to the emergence of more top-quality eateries as the city rebuilds,” Nicholson says.
Judges will visit each of the final 50 restaurants anonymously in pairs to select eight category winners.

Metro Top 50 Auckland Restaurants 2011

Metro magazine has released its list of the 50 best restaurants in Auckland in 2011.

Restaurants dropped from the 2010 list include Java Room, La Cigale, Monsoon Poon, Q at the Westin, The Mulberry, White Restaurant and Wine Chambers.

New high-profile restaurants that didn’t quite make the list include The Foodstore in the Viaduct, The Refreshment Room in Titirangi, and Eight at the Langham.

Last year’s Supreme Winner of the Metro Audi Restaurant of the Year Awards was The Grove, in St Patrick’s Square, Wyndham St.

The 2011 Supreme Winner and other category winners will be revealed in the June issue of Metro, on sale May 31.

Restaurant Association CEO, Steve Mackenzie, resigned from the Restaurant Association April 2011

“Restaurant Association CEO, Steve Mackenzie, finished at the Restaurant Association at the end of April 2011.  In his 18 months in the role he undertook many excellent initiatives, especially around working closely with partners in the training and education areas such as HSI and the Ministry of Social Development.

“His work securing relationships with companies such as Coca Cola and American Express will lead to greater benefits for existing and potential members.

“Steve was also very successful in encouraging greater branch activity in the provinces and has also been instrumental in setting up a number of regional restaurant awards programmes in the Lewisham model.

“The board wishes Steve all the best for the future.

“In the interim his role will be covered by former Restaurant Association CEO, Alistair Rowe, until a new CEO is appointed.

“We are fortunate that Alistair had been continuing to work at the office assisting with the accounting funcation and can offer some extra time to ensure the continued smooth operation of the Association – Mike Egan, Restaurant Association President.”
