A Drop of Red is a combination European bistro, coffee shop, cozy restaurant and wine lovers den, offering the largest selection of Central Otago wines anywhere on the planet. A wonderful choice for casual lunch, coffee and dessert, after work meet-ups, business meetings, functions and romantic evenings.
We offer warm food and yummy desserts from noon daily throughout till closing. All of our food is homemade, some are family recipes, others old favourites, and other ingredients created by local chefs and delivered just to us.
We are devoted to wine and Central Otago, and encourage exploration into the numerous worlds of Central Otago Pinots and other grape varieties. Therefore, our philosophy is simple: in addition to the wines always offered by the glass, any bottle of wine in the bistro will be opened if two glasses are purchased. This results in an ever-changing “blackboard” of individual wine options. You never know what will be on offer, day-to-day.
Set in rustic surroundings and housed in what used to be an old barn, our bistro is intended to be a comfortable and casual home away from home. Our seating offers privacy and comfort. We invite you to relax by the fire reading a book or magazine, play a game of Scrabble or Backgammon, put a piece in the puzzle, check eMail on our free WiFi, escape into the view from the veranda or garden – all while enjoying the experience of A Drop of Red. We also serve drops of white, and beer – and numerous hot and cold non-alcoholic beverages.

We were seated at our table, were presented with a menu, asked if we would like drink which we waited a half an hour before it came, only one person in attendance, and not that many in the restaurant.
On putting in our order were advised that they were short on potatoes and would be charged accordingly
the meal finally came, so disappointed!!!!!!
Seafood chowder was very watery and had little seafood in it,
Moroccan lamb hot pot, very spicey/salty and couldn’t taste the lamb and last but not least, chicken hotpot, well havent seen the chicken in it yet.
We decided to have another wine, but only a few to select from and was told that they wouldn’t open a bottle of wine unless we got two glasses, didn’t matter that we both wanted two different wines so we opted out of ordering .
Oh,and the glassess we were given to drink our water out were agee jars !!!!!!
We certainly wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone
