Never been to Amici, an mixed feelings with all the ‘reviews’. We had a really good night. Great kids menu, our food was amazing. Also had a guy playing acoustic, which is my favourite. Very clean and tidy. I do not have a complaint about this place. Got busier as the people from the game dribbled in. Good for them. We will be back !!

Have just gotten home from the most disappointing evening ever! We have eaten at Amici so many times and have been really happy but after tonight’s experience and also the table beside us (who we also knew) we will not be going back ever! I ordered (as stated on the menu) the Amici Smoked Salmon with potatoes and salad what arrived was an enormous plate of lettuce topped with a pathetic amount of salmon and no potato (the chef forgot). I had asked the waiter about the dish and what she told me did not indicate a bowl full of salad – I was so disappointed and told them not to worry about the potatoes or the entire meal! My daughter ordered Gnocchi without mushrooms and when it was delivered (finally) to our table the owner specifically said “here is your gnoochi without mushrooms” and surprise, surprise the first forkful was mushroom with a lovely hair attached – and their gnocchi has gone from beautiful large pieces to thin almost ‘strip like’ pieces!!!!!! They took the bowl away to redo it however, because our meals were so long arriving and it was so late we said “don’t bother”! My husband ordered the chicken pollo – the chicken was dry on the edges and the mash potato bed (70% of the dish) – was cool and average! We waited far too long for our entrees then our mains and from all account the table beside was experiencing the same but worse!! I will add that the bread and dips we had for our entrees were lovely but after our really bad experience with the meals and service we will be finding another restaurant! Bummed out that an evening to celebrate my husband’s birthday ended with only two of our family of 4 having main meals! Have they changed the chef? If so, change again!!!!

Absolutely most enjoyed! Beautiful meals, idyllically private seated outside while gentle listening music playing alongside. Staff were courteous and attentive and highly recommend it be your next dining experience A++

Unfortunately, people that do know real italian or mediterannean food or service would not go to this restaurant run by someone who comes from Germany. I have found her and the other staff, aloof, rude and not hospitable whatsoever. They definitely don’t put the effort in. The food is lacking in seasoning, flavour or any kind of imagination and the decor is plastic dust covered ivy, with tacky plastic plants with worn out decor. Anyone that thinks the food here is worth the money probably thinks that macdonalds is a quality, healthy place to take their children to make them big and strong. I think the owner should stick to german cuisine of bratwurst and sauerkraut. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone I like.

The food was great, as was the service. I can recommend the pizzas. The atmosphere is amazing, as well. All in all, it was a perfect experience.

Amici is my favourite restaurant in Whangarei. My husband and I have never been disappointed by the quality of the food and the service exceeds anywhere else in Whangarei. The owner is German and has infused a very European style to the restaurant that reminds me of holidaying in mainland Europe.
We particularly like the way that the staff are so friendly and courteous. The food is especially delicious for those of us with European taste buds, who expect something more exciting and interesting than the traditional local cuisine.

My family and I have always loved this restaurant. The staff are always attentive and friendly. The surroundings are pleasant and up until recently the food has been excellent. However we visited at the weekend and the service and surroundings were still great but for the first time the food was disappointing. Two of our party had pasta, both commented that their separate choices were sadly lacking in taste. The lamb dish was like an overpriced roast dinner. Dessert was still great – we all enjoyed that as usual. Please Amici bring back your previous high quality delicious meals.
My husband and I got married at Amici’s in January. It was a great decision! For a very affordable price we feasted like Royalty. Many guests commented on how friendly and efficient the staff were, and how great everything tasted. The presentation was exceptional. My husband is gluten free and they catered their Italian food for that. Awesome.

I went to a recent Opera Night at Amici and have to say although I thought the food was okay and the music great, the service left a lot to be desired. Orders were slow to arrive and the manager/owner was very rude when we said we didn’t realise the $10 cover charge had to be paid in cash and hadn’t brought any with us. It hadn’t been mentioned in any of the advertising or when we booked that we would need to bring cash so this is probably something they want to think of in future to save them having to be so rude to customers.

A very poor effort. Boring menu, over priced and a rude owner. Don’t go, it’s just not worth it. A real Italian would be insulted that this place calls itself Amici meaning friendly, because it simply isn’t.

I dine frequently at Amici. The service is always friendly.
I used to love this place but they must have a new chef as the meals are not as good as they used to be. The side salad was uninspiring and the seafood overcooked in the seafood marinara. I hope Amici return to form. The last two meals there have been disappointing and the new menu doesn’t excite. I don’t eat pizzas so if you’re going for pizzas they’re probably still okay but the other meals vary between average and good. In the past everything on the menu was excellent

We frequently go to Amici. The food is always great, atmosphere is nice and the staff always friendly. Love the calamari and the pizzas are always yummy. Our grandson is always happy to come here with us as the staff are great to the children and involve them by always talking to them. We will be back yet again.
Absolutely fabulous. Place was so good on Friday night when I went with my girlfriends, that I took my husband back for Sunday lunch today and he loved it too. Very reasonable prices, very friendly service, lovely atmosphere and great food. No criticisms at all other than one – my suggestion is that the restaurant heat their plates for hot food – creamy sauces appreciate this treatment and the sauces are otherwise to die for. Certainly will go back, but will request the heated plate. Cheers Rosalene (One Tree Point)

Did you eat at this restaurant? Have an opinion to share?

I have worked and eaten many times in an Italian restaurant (owned by Italians) and regardless of the nationality of the owner of Amici I have to say the food more than matches up. I have always found the staff to be very pleasant and I enjoy the outside-in feel of the place. If I was to improve anything I would make sure the flowers on the tables were fresh every day, as ours were a little limp on our last visit. Other than that this is my favourite place in Whangarei!
