I was excited that a new Mexican restaurant was opening in Hamilton, because I LOVE Mexican food. So, when we went for a meal at Amigos I had high hopes.

We took a seat at a table, and were greeted with a friendly smile – which is always a good start.

The service throughout the meal was good.

The starters were good, although lacked a bit of flavour, but we were disappointed with the mains. Two of the meals were not hot enough, and the rice on another was only luke warm. None of it looked, or tasted fresh – almost reheated.

When I asked for hot sauce to add a bit of flavour to the my meal, I was met with a confused look. I said any hot sauce would do – even just Tabasco. Took them a while, but finally they tracked down a bottle. Seems a little strange for a Mexican restaurant not to have hot sauce???

Overall, not really impressed.

So disappointed in their view of what Mexican food is. The enchiladas barely had any sauce or flavour, for that matter. Their salsa could use more flavour and kick in it! The only decent thing I ate all night was the rice. As for the drinks, frozen margaritas, no thanks! How about a margarita that leaves you wanting more??… on the rocks please!!

I went there on the way to Auckland from Taupo. Actually, I was there for ‘Coyote’ restaurant, but it had been gone and there was a new Mexican restaurant, which was called Amigos.
We were 4 of us and we ordered all different dishes. It takes bit long time. Frankly to say, I didn’t expect too much, because it hardly found review or reputation of this restaurant and it was only $10 menu.
When our dishes served, we all surprised. I ordered ‘soft taco with chilly and garlic prawn’, There were two taco with some salad and chilly bean, also rice on the plate.
Taste? really wonderful. my mother was not familiar with Mexican food but she really enjoyed her meal. We also ordered Caesar salad, I can only say “so nice”.
If I have chance to visit Hamilton, I must visit there again.

Fantastic food, good quality, good portion size. We got the fajita platter for 2 and some cocktails, which were also amazing! Fab service, had a really friendly young British waitress who was so lovely, and the whole experience was really excellent which can be rare for Hamilton City restaurants… Timely service and meals too.
