Hands down my favorite restaurant in Wanganui. I have never had a bad meal here. I don’t normally eat out unless I’m staying somewhere out of town as I hate to waste my money on food I can make better at home which is why Angora is the only place I like to wine and dine. The food is fantastic and cooked to perfection. The prices are fair as well. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing (unless you’re seated by the toilets apparently) This is where I like to take my relatives from overseas for a nice meal as I know I wont be disappointed. P.S – try the lemon cheesecake (YUM!)

Our Angora experience last night was one which prompts me to write a review…last time we went and had a similar experience I put it down to ‘just a bad day’ for them but not so this time. Front of house greeted us in latex gloves, seated us at a table that was obviously dirty (had some sort of strange black soot stuff all over it) and handed us menus still with the latex gloves on. We had to wipe all the muck off the table ourselves. We then waited a fair while for service and when it came the waitress asked if we were ready to order food at which point I said we would like to order drinks first (no offer of drinks before this) . We ordered garlic bread enough for 6; when it arrived it was obviously only enough for 4 when I asked if another plate was coming out the waitress looked over her shoulder at me and said ‘probably’…it never arrived. An hour and a quarter later we still sat there with empty glasses and dirty plates having seen no more service at all. My husband then had to go and ask for some service at which point our meals miraculously appeared… sadly the dirty plates didn’t disappear so we shifted them ourselves. My order was wrong which they did attempt to remedy by bringing me another part of my order on a separate plate rather than taking away the wrong order and starting again. A second round of drinks finally arrived…one of those orders was wrong too. By this stage we had had enough and didn’t feel we wanted to risk ordering dessert and coffee. Needless to say we wont be returning.

The food at this restaurant was AMAZING! Truly delicious. The waitresses were friendly enough. What was sorely lacking was a bit of professionalism. There were a number of items crossed off on the menu, and the waitresses didn’t appear to have any sort of uniform. Even just a simple uniform of plain white tops and black pants/skirt would have gone a long way to bring this restaurant up to the level it could be at with such excellent food.

went there last night for dinner. Welcome was warm and inviting, waitress Maria? was bubbly, helpful and friendly. Food was absolutely exquisite. Wait between courses was minimal. Starters of around 12 Mussels in divine sauce for hubby, 6 dolma’s for me – both beautiful and generous!! If you went to a Wellington restaurant you’d be lucky if you got 3 mussels/dolma’s. I had the king prawns baked in a little dish with vegetables and cheese, there were a dozen prawns in the dish!, hubby had lamb rump – divine!! We waddled out of there, happy and totally satisfied. We’ll see you next time we’re in Wanga’s. Top marks to Angora!!

Four of us ate here on a Monday night and we were all very happy with both the service and the food. Between us we had lamb, steak, fish and duck as mains and all meals were beautifully prepared and presented. I had dolmades for entree and the yoghurt sauce could have been more flavoursome. My husband had the haloumi entree which he was very pleased with. Wanting to prolong the experience of good food we decided to share a prawn pizza between the four of us – it was truly delicious, juicy sweet prawns, good cheese and a beautifully thin pizza base. We finished with baklava – sweet and crunchy – and chocolate mud cake, a perfect way to end a great dining experience.

Fantastic place. Food is great value and delicious. I love the chicken breast and it is such a good price for a decent amount of food. The baklava is my favourite desert. Always enjoy going here. Very prompt service.

Great food.
Lovely, friendly service.
Reasonable prices.
The only thing cutting back the extra star is one one occasion when there for an evening meal, it took over an hour to get our entree, followed by another hour or so for our mains.

I’m from Australia, where we’ve had great food and great service.
Angora’s food is excellent. The service, however, is shocking.

I called up for the booking and I was not greeted appropriately. I had to ask whether I was even calling Angora the restaurant.

I ordered a drink, which they did not have, so they gave me a different drink that i did not want. The owner of Angora has the stones to come to the table to argue with me about it. She also “suggested” that i checked what i was ordering. Well, i did. They just decided for me.

We were there for 1.5hrs, with many toilet trips out of 13 people. Someone had left a number 2 in the toilet which was not cleaned up; demostrating a lack of toilet checks.

Two people from the tablet ordered 2 rare eye fillets. However, the waitress got the order wrong and the fillets came out almost well done. The table finished their meals, before the two can start theirs.

Never going back there again.

Total disappoint.
Our party arrived to find our reservation hadn’t even been written down, luckily there was a spare table for us. Half the menu wasn’t available to order, they had no garlic bread, Caesar salads and no pizza because the oven needed fixing. This would have been okay if the mains we ordered didn’t take 45 minutes, the restaurant was only half full so this was way too long. On top of that, the steak was undercooked, the ‘creamy’ pasta sauce was runny and the lettuce in the salads wasn’t even fresh. The manager didn’t help, only saying sorry when she should have offered compensation or new meals cooked properly, overall she was quite rude. The waitresses were very friendly at least.

Left unsatisfied, heard good things about this place but it’s a joke of a restaurant. Not going back.

wowwwww what an experience..before i brag about how excellent the service and the food was i need to say TRAMISU and BAKLAVA … do not, do not, do nottttt leave before you try this two :) ……
I’ve been visiting Wanganui a lot for the last 6 years for business, something finally changed sonce my last visit about a year ago.
We were greeted by the door and seated at the leather couches by the fire place. We should’ve booked to save the waiting but 20 min passed very fast while sipping on our wine anyway… We ordered few dishes from entrée and i had the CHICKEN ISTANBUL,,, it was divine. i also tried my friends duck and that was divine as well, i know what to eat on my next visit. than came the TRAMISU and BAKLAVA , we were sharing the two desserts but all six of us ended up ordering their own …
The service was excellent , they didn’t mind us paying all separatly and i personally think it was nice to see the head chef whom i believe was the owner to come and greet the tables at the end of the night…
I’ll be back for sure.

Four friends and I travelled from Auckland to Wanganui over the weekend, to visit a friend for the first time. We were a little sceptical about this fairly newly established restaurant, however, we were absolutely thrilled with everything from service to the food in regards to this establishment. Many of my friends who regularly visit Wanganui from Auckland, have always been disappointed with the eateries that Wanganui have to offer, but Angora was such a pleasant surprise. We were welcomed with warmth and seated immediately at the black leather sofas as we had to wait for a good half hour. Our lovely host,a pretty tall brunette whom I think was the wife of the head chef and owner of the restaurant showed great hospitality.Waiting didn’t concern us too much, because our local friend reassured us that it is well worth the wait. We consumed a bottle of tasty bubbly and just enjoyed the friendly relaxing atmosphere. Our hotel owner and manager also commented on the superior standard of service and food of Angora( who is also apparently a regular diner at Angora).
The waitresses were friendly and impeccable with their service. The menu consisted of amazing mediterrean dishes. I have travelled to Turkey several times and being married to a Turkish man, have a fairly good understanding and palate for Turkish cuisine. I was extremely impressed with the menu. We had such a good time the first visit, we booked our table for the next night. What really impressed us was the prices of the main meals, you get excellent value for your money.Such great prices. We will definitely visit Angora again.

This restaurant was a welcome newbie to Wanganui. Initially it seemed ok with some promise. However, it seems to be deteriorating with time. Its early success seems to have resulted in owners becoming arrogant and careless. Hospitality of owners and staff really leaves much to be desired. We will not be returning.

I booked in with my friends and we all enjoyed the night. Was greeted at the door with big smiles. Was walked to our table and the waitress had water on the table right away. We ordered drinks entrees and mains. drinks were brought out fast. Our waitress was very busy with all her other tables but still was always smiling. Mains were amazing. Paying was good too, we all paid separate but the owner was very nice about that. All in all good food, good serve good night

I found this restaurant to be highly recommended. The food is exceptional. I went with a group of friends and we all ordered different meals, each one of them being a reasonable price and beautifully presented. The customer service at this restaurant was delightful. Our waitress looked after our table very well. Will definitely be going back.

We have eaten there once – excellent food and no complaints at all. Was very surprised to see some negative comments in other reviews?? Excellent range of vegetarian options also.

Have tried to get back in twice since (Saturdays 12th and 19th Feb 2011) was booked out both nights. They must be doing something right. Good luck guys

This restaurant needs to learn some serious customer service skills asap.

Our initial thought was ‘Wow, a new restaurant in Wanganui, looks presentable, lets try it’.

Design and layout is fresh and modern, but overall impression and service is disgusting to say the least.

We were seated and a ditzy blonde girl came over and stated they were short staffed that night, and complained about how there were only 2 of them to look after a whole restaurant. As if I needed to hear her problems.

The worst was that she advised us we needed to hurry up with our order and our food because of her predicament. She forgot half our drinks and everyone in the restaurant seemed to have an attitude.

Food was average. Overall, we were made to feel like a total inconvenience, service was awful, and after talking to numerous people that have been we all agree we wont be going back!

Was very disappointed with our evening out. We had to wait an hour between entree & mains. Apparently they’ve only had one chef on for a while so am wondering why book the restaurant out if you can’t cope. When my main arrived it was so extremely hot I burnt the roof of my mouth, it had to have come out of a microwave to have been so hot. A couple sitting next to us sent their meal back because it was cold. Won’t be returning.

ambient atmosphere-big no.spent our night looking at baby chairs and watching people go in and out of the toilets.i supose this added some entertainment as the meal took an hour to arrive.the seafood pizza looked very boaring-just prawns on a cheese base-nothing else.it tasted ok or was it a case of me being very hungry.friends have organised a get together next week at the angora,i certainly wont be joining them!

Went to Angora with a group of seven on a Saturday night. Several of the group were not keen to go because they don’t like ‘fancy food’. However everyone was impressed with the food, the friendly service and value for money. In spite of being packed, service was quick, but we didn’t feel hurried.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I’m sure we will be returning there again soon.
I have heard nothing but good comments from others who have been there and I’m sure this new restaurant will do well in Wanganui where recommendations are by word of mouth.
One small niggle was the reluctance of the counter staff to split the bill. I know they were busy but this shouldn’t be an issue.

For me, the sign of a great restaurant is getting simple dishes, such as a Caesar Salad and a Margarita pizza right. Unfortunately, our experience of the food was amateur, using some mediocre ingredients and ingredients that were used in a very meager fashion.

I am not expecting miracles to be produced with these two classic menu items but I do expect not to feel left cheated.

One would expect a Chicken Caesar Salad to contain more that 3 small cubes of chicken, and for the salad to have a balance of flavor and not be loaded up with the cheaper lettuce (that I suspect was not Cos). My large margarita pizza was most disappointing with dough that was undercooked, a tomato sauce, that was used so sparingly that it could not distinguished by sight nor taste. This was topped off with a large amount of cheese and half, yes half a fresh basil leaf, which was skillfully cut into four thin pieces.

I am aware that some menu items differ from the traditional expectations, and they are sometimes interpreted differently based on the chef’s culinary direction and influences, but to spoil a classic pizza with a 110 year history and to make bland a classic salad shows a lack of respect on all fronts.
