As the name implies, we specialise in prime tender Angus beef – the best steak available. Our menu is quite diverse, besides prime black Angus steaks, it also features lamb, chicken, pork, fish and vegetarian dishes. Angus Restaurant & Bar also has a variety of tasty entrees and luscious desserts. All vegetables are sourced daily through local suppliers.
The Angus Restaurant & Bar premise is situated on three levels. At street level is formal dining area which can be partitioned off from the rest of the premises with elegant floor-to-ceiling drapes. Directly behind is reception with a waiting area where diners can sit and relax on comfortable settees while waiting for a table. A few steps up from reception is the Moon Bar, which opens at 5pm, live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
A flight of stairs takes you from the bar up to a courtyard that has a partial glass roof, under which is a comfortable sitting area, a gas fire, and tables and stools.
Adjacent is the family dining room which can accommodate 50-60 diners. We have highchairs and a childrens menu for 12 years and under. In one corner of the room is a quiet children’s area with beanbags, lots of soft toys and a table with chairs for children to draw and read. Each week we have a colouring competition for children with the prize of a free kids meal voucher.
From mid 2011, Angus Cafe & Restaurant has been re-branded as Angus Restaurant & Bar

In summary, delicious rump steak, big portions, well-presented, nice decor, excellent table service. Definitely worth going back again.
Went there again recently for my birthday with my GF. Another 5 star!! Both dishes beautifully executed with the right temperatures and unselfish portions! We had a great night!

I liked the atmosphere at Angus but haven’t been back since I was so disappointed with the meal.

Our Entrees came out at a great time of around 10 minutes, amazing timing and amazing taste. Our waiter came past every few minutes making sure things were ok and was always in great spirit and he showed us perfect skill for getting us our drinks on time and even as they were almost empty. it was almost as though he could read our minds we were after yet another drink. Then, only minutes after our Entrees left the table the Mains arrived. Anyway, to cut a long story short, our Waiter continued to check on us, but not too much to the extent that it was over the top, he was excellent and would recommend anyone get his service. Other staff members kept coming past and asking impolitely for drinks but we only really wanted to deal with Our waiter. Unlike our waiter who was dealing amazingly with what i could only describe as “his section/tables”, the other staff seemed to have no idea as to what areas they were doing as they were all over the restaurant.
I would recommend Angus to anyone, and would recommend you ask for our waiter.
Great price, great food, and exceptional Waiter which is the way every Restaurant should be run. He was Fantastic. The down side was, when we went to pay, who i could only describe as a Manager, or someone who has no idea how to run a Restaurant. He had an unprofessional manner when he spoke to us, and kept interupting us while speaking to someone on a walkytalky. we got interupted three times without an appoligy. Unlike our waiter, he was useless.
All in all, that Manager should be kept to an office and kept away from Customers.
The waiter however, he needs a medal for our amazing night out.

However, table service was really disappointing. We were in a party of around 15 and ordered with no problems. When the food came out, the rather loud waiter would just stand at the head of the table and yell “Sirloin. Medium Rare!”. If nobody answered immediately he would get stroppy and yell louder. We all had to claim our meals as he yelled across the table – really poor service. Other restaurants manage to figure out which person which meal goes to and Angus needs to sort out a system for doing the same. (nobody at our table had changed places – it should have been straight forward).
Add to that the stroppy waiter’s insistence that we order coffees before dessert and you’ll get the picture.
So all up, food 10/10, bar service 10/10, table service 3/10.

On inspection of the menu before dining at Angus i thought “oh great, ill be able to go out and have a decent steak”. The wait staff were terrible, don’t get me wrong they were pleasant but clearly had not received adequate training to be let loose in the restaurant. The music was blaring, one wait member would turn it down only for another to crank it back up- the music was inappropriate for a restaurant anyway. I was with a group of 14 and the table had one salt and pepper shaker between us, the meals came out staggered in time (probably 15 mins from the first to last), the staff would bring out one meal at a time and there was about three of them serving our table. The waiter ended up giving me the wrong meal and had to swap it with someone else’s. The steaks were only just warm. The steak was cooked as i asked and the sauce of the day was nice, however, i would expect an “Angus Coleslaw” to be something made on site, but there was no mistaking this coleslaw for something straight out of a packet and slapped onto the plate. I didn’t bother to order desert because to be honest i didn’t think it was worth the risk of more disappointment. For somewhere “reasonably” priced i would expect a lot more.

*Update*: I am amused by the postings after mine, and the venom and hate that ooses from every word of it and other similar postings. I do not know what happened on the night you dined, as so, nor do you on my night, although I tell the truth in the fact that we had a damn good night with excellent top quality food and service….. but when you feel the need to accuse me of being ‘ put up to it’ by management, I take that as highy offensive. You cannot possible know how good bad or indifferent my night was, as you were not there…. I have dined in many different styles and types of restaurants from good old pub grub to fine dining establishments, here and overseas and I know when I have had a good meal. I stand by every word I have written and do recommend readers giving this establishment a go. I have no connection with management, staff etc, i dont even live in the same part of nz…….Good luck Angus, we will be back (gotta have that pork belly and mash again)You can have a bad meal/night/experience at any restaurant, restaurants are only as good as their chef and staff and food on the night, but it is my opinion that there is more going on with some of these reviews than just a bad night…….

Atmosphere was excellent and easily accommodated larger groups. Staff were friendly and helpful and we all got entrees and mains at the same time. Oh and the food was goooooood! definitely go back.

The wine selection was very good, and we had several bottles of Central Otago Pinot recommended by our waiter which were excellent quality and a reasonable price.
Although the restaurant was busy (we visited on a friday), the service was exemplary. We were visited regularly by our waiter for meal checks, but not so much that it felt overbearing, and orders were taken and delivered promptly.
My parents left Dunedin very happy people, and our reunion was a great success, aided by the great food and service we received. I can highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a reasonably priced meal in a beautiful setting. We will be back!

Ive never experienced worse service than this. Firstly they couldn’t get the side salads right, sent back twice(no sauce and without onions was an issue for them) then the waitress had forgot ton what steaks were medium and medium rare when she brought them to the table. we had to work it out for ourselves. We did have a table of 13 so we didn’t worry to much at the time.
Though one thing that annoyed us was if everyone had finished eating the table should be cleared. Even taking our coffee orders afterwards, plates remained on the table from our main courses. I stacked them myself and moved to the table beside ours.
In short it just seamed like to many tables with inexperienced staff.
Not that i expected fine dining but there was some sort of kids play pen in the restaurant???
Food tasted great though….that gets a star

We both really enjoyed our mains – steak and chicken – and were impressed with the size of the meals. I ordered the small chicken meal and it was plenty big enough, and at a price of $24, pretty good value I thought.
For dessert we shared a tiramisu, which was HUGE, but not very much like a tiramisu as I know it. it was pretty average.
The service was good, but not outstanding. We had to wait a long while before getting our orders taken and then it only happened because we flagged someone down to take our orders. Seemed slightly disorganised, but staff were all friendly and polite.
Moon Bar was great as always.

When the waitress brought out the cutlery on the plates, one of the plates has a hair on it.
The serving of the meals were quick (10 to 15 mins), however when my fries came out there were no sauces. I asked the waitress for the sauce and I had to wait for 15 mins. Only the tomato sauce arrived and I asked if I could have the aioli sauce and the waitress said this sauce doesn’t come with fries.
Either the communication is not clear or staff are not trained properly to know the menu and what comes with what – this was the letdown.

As for our meals we all had steak, including the kids, and were totally impressed by our meals. The steak was so tender and delicious and by no means small, they were as good as the smell we encountered parking the car outside!
I was more than happy with the meals and service and will definitely be going back.
Angus Steakhouse is sure to become an institution in Dunedin.

Upon our return to Angus we noticed a calmer atmosphere and more attentive staff. We (4 guests) tried the steak, and although the selection of cuts is small, they were all cooked to our liking with perfection. Truly melt in your mouth material!
Also sampling some amazing chowder, we all were very impressed with the flavour and quality of the meals and delighted with the friendly bustle of this unique restaurant.
(Our comic mate Stu suggests putting an Angus stew on the menu)
Overall very happy with the meal and dining experience and will be sure to visit Angus again.

It was a relatively busy night with another table of about our size upstairs along with quite a few smaller tables, but even still when it took an hour for our meals to arrive, we started to wonder if it was a ploy to get more money flowing through the bar.
When our food finally arrived everyone cut in with anticipation, which was quickly met with total disappointment when we realised that all 8 of our steaks were very very over cooked, our waitress came to check if “everyone had the right meal” when one person at our table mentioned her steak was quite over she offered to take it back and get a new one but after waiting an hour for the first she was very hungry and didn’t want to risk waiting another hour for a burnt offering. To overcook a piece of meat like an Angus steak is sacrilege especially when your paying between $29 and $33! Needless to say we will go back to Moon bar for cocktails but will not hurry back to the restaurant
The one waitress we did have wasnt fully aware of the certain details of the specials on that night and had to keep going back and forth to find the answers to our questions. Maybe it was because she was new or a temp, but either way it helps to be fully prepared for any question a diner may have.
I was pleased with the wine recommendations according to the food I had ordered and knew the bar staff knew what they were talking about.
It did take a while for our food to arrive but it could have been because they also were cooking for people seated upstairs that I wasnt aware of at the time. It does take awhile to get the attention of the wait staff.
Overall I found the food lovely, especially the coleslaw, ribs, fries and side salad. I would recommend the food to everybody but the service is questionable, depending on diners expectations.
I give it 3 stars because of the interior decor, it has a great bar, the menu is somewhat comprehensive, the prices are a bit on the high side.

Always nice to know that her hands that had spent most the night in her hair, was the same hands carrying our plates out and drinks aswell
2
Food was average – just about anyone could have made it. Overpriced.
Service terrible. Waitress left the table at least twice while we were trying to order, not polite or apologetic when telling us just about everything we wanted was “unavailable”.
Would never go back.

Service was Very very bad. Waiters ignoring us since we went in. They were busy gossiping and folding the napkins. They saw us but just ignore that we were at the door.. waiting to be served.
One of the waiter, who served us, very rude and arrogant. We all were not Impressed! He looked like he doesn’t want to serve us. I never seen this bad service ever in this town for this type of restaurant. My husband was still eating his salad.. the waiter grabbed his plate away without asking if my husband finish his meal…. another incident. One of the meat was accidentally dropped into wine glass .. when he collected the dirty plate.. we told him oh sorry about the wine glass that it was dirty. He sigh and took grab the wine glass and dump the meat in the plate and banged the wine glass on the table (very loudly). He must be angry that we made a mess… *I was shocked with his rude behavior. He acted worst than any waiter I ever seen in my entire life!
We had to send 2 steaks back as it was over cooked, cold mash potato. (Table next to us also sent Steak back to kitchen..) The second attempt wasn’t too bad. I got seafood meal. Not as bad as steak but not good either.. Salmon was ok, risotto was a bit over cook. but prawn (not fresh, some over cook and some overcook).. bad display.. Pretty disappointed …
Beef only have 3 choices..
$32.00 for a piece of meat and slop of mash potato and horrible service.. we definitely not going back.
He was a waiter from hell! We should have listen our friend who warned us not to go there.
To Angus’s credit they provide a DONENESS guide, as in done a steak is according to the usual descriptors – rare, medium, well done etc etc. It even comes with photos and a percentage as to the amount of pink you should have – all of which is very hard to make out because of the dim moody lighting. BUT at least you have some confidence in knowing that they should at least know how your steak should look.
You expect with a steakhouse that there may be a few more than just 3 steaks and that they might have a few weight varieties too. You get a choice of 3 Angus steaks and they are either 250gm or 300gm. Steak isn’t the only thing on the menu though. BUT you can’t really go to a steakhouse and not order steak. There is a sauce of the day which changes depending on how whoever it is that makes that decision is feeling. On this day it was bacon and herb.
I generally ask for my steaks well done knowing that most places under-cook. I braved my chances and went for medium well. Again because of the dim moody lighting it was hard to tell whether they had managed the ever so slight pink, but it seemed a bit more well done, in saying that, I don’t mind well done.
The meal was accompanied with coleslaw, which you expect to be dry and tasteless as it is in most steakhouses, but this was probably one of the better coleslaw’s.
The place is obviously popular, but at least one staff member could use a few tips in how to sell a meal. People at another table near us asked a waiter to tell them about the steak meals and his response was “We’re a steakhouse, it’s what we do best”. The guy wont ever be a car salesman … “its a car, it goes vrooom” probably wouldn’t net him Sales Person of the Month.
All in all, its a nice place with good food (and good music mostly). Would happily go back.

There were only 3 steaks to choose from, not disappointing but did expect a variety of steaks to choose from. Wine was delicious. Service was very very friendly and pleasant. Would definitely go again.

Family dining area, well set up bar and also more personal dining area up the front to get a break from family with young kids.
Very similar menu to lone star.
Meal wise, unfortunately a bad experience with the Black Angus rib eye, ordered in medium rare but is the most under cooked steak i have ever seen.
Also vegetarian main was very tasteless.
Did you eat at this restaurant? Have an opinion to share?
