As the name implies, we specialise in prime tender Angus beef – the best steak available. Our menu is quite diverse, besides prime black Angus steaks, it also features lamb, chicken, pork, fish and vegetarian dishes. Angus Restaurant & Bar also has a variety of tasty entrees and luscious desserts. All vegetables are sourced daily through local suppliers.

The Angus Restaurant & Bar premise is situated on three levels. At street level is formal dining area which can be partitioned off from the rest of the premises with elegant floor-to-ceiling drapes. Directly behind is reception with a waiting area where diners can sit and relax on comfortable settees while waiting for a table. A few steps up from reception is the Moon Bar, which opens at 5pm, live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

A flight of stairs takes you from the bar up to a courtyard that has a partial glass roof, under which is a comfortable sitting area, a gas fire, and tables and stools.

Adjacent is the family dining room which can accommodate 50-60 diners. We have highchairs and a childrens menu for 12 years and under. In one corner of the room is a quiet children’s area with beanbags, lots of soft toys and a table with chairs for children to draw and read. Each week we have a colouring competition for children with the prize of a free kids meal voucher.

From mid 2011, Angus Cafe & Restaurant has been re-branded as Angus Restaurant & Bar

Excellent friendly professional staff and establishment. My husband and I went out for a quiet evening meal and had a very enjoyable and entertaining time. The food was excellent and the service was top notch. We stayed for drinks afterwards and will recommend Angus to all. AAA+++ Thank you to the Angus team, we will dine with you again.

OMG….Had a fantastic afternoon of cocktails at the Moon Bar on Saturday to celebrate a 50th. Ten of us girls and Robb- the barman- couldn’t have been more attentive, the cocktails were to die for and his skill at cocktail acrobatics kept us all enthrilled. Would recommend to everyone. Can’t wait for another excuse to do it all again!! :D

Where too start! walked in no booking we had to wait 45minutes for a table in there moon bar ,got the table and it had not been wiped down from the last customers, both of us ordered the rump steaks i ordered rare and my partner ordered medium rare both came out well done! we asked the waiter for new ones and then ended up waiting another 40 minutes for those. the gravy was horrible as it was salty and watery my guess is that it was made from a packet! also felt we were rushed too eat as the waiter kept looking at us as if we were a real hassle.didn’t even bother to look at the dessert menu. Disappointed at the least we wont be returning!

Went there as a flat of 5. I ordered the rump steak which was cooked to perfection medium-rare. Our waiter was excellent. He came back a few times to clear plates and to ask how our meals were but did not do it too frequently that we felt being watched while having our meals. Haven’t been to moonbar before though we might try it sometime.
In summary, delicious rump steak, big portions, well-presented, nice decor, excellent table service. Definitely worth going back again.

Went there again recently for my birthday with my GF. Another 5 star!! Both dishes beautifully executed with the right temperatures and unselfish portions! We had a great night!

Great place, intimate atmosphere, and very comfortable. Service was friendly. Only gripe is the I found the food average at best. Considering the fact that steak is the speciality on the menu one would have high expectations of the meal. The problem wasn’t so much the way the steak was cooked; medium rare, and it arrived at the table medium rare. The problem was the meat and the presentation was of poor quality. Basically, for thirty dollars I received two large servings of mashed potato, with an average sized steak drowned in gravy.

I liked the atmosphere at Angus but haven’t been back since I was so disappointed with the meal.

The food was also superb and presented very well. This restaurant is definately a place we would go back to for future celebrations! Highly recommended! :)

My partner and i went to Angus steakhouse for our 9yr anniversary and had the best time! We had a drink at moon bar 1st then had our meal in the restaurant in the top section. I had the mussels in green Thai curry with coconut cream and i still dream about it, it was amazing and a huge meal. The overall feel of the bar and restaurant together was so refreshing, we will certainly be returning =*)

Here we were thinking that we would go to a Steak house and after reading the reviews be utterly embarrassed and upset. We dined in on Friday night the 15th of july around 715pm. However, after going we have been blown away from what i could only describe as amazing service and total professionalism from our waiter {Bill or Phil i think he was called}. He was well presented, and well manoured, and was easy to deal with and helped us in every aspect of the menu. My partner ordered a Pork Belly and I ordered a steak but changed it so much so that i was going to be suprised if the waiter{Bill, or Phil} at our table was going to get it right. However, our Waiter was so smack on with his order he even told the kitchen {as we over heard him talking} that he was sorry for the hassle and hopes that things comes out right.
Our Entrees came out at a great time of around 10 minutes, amazing timing and amazing taste. Our waiter came past every few minutes making sure things were ok and was always in great spirit and he showed us perfect skill for getting us our drinks on time and even as they were almost empty. it was almost as though he could read our minds we were after yet another drink. Then, only minutes after our Entrees left the table the Mains arrived. Anyway, to cut a long story short, our Waiter continued to check on us, but not too much to the extent that it was over the top, he was excellent and would recommend anyone get his service. Other staff members kept coming past and asking impolitely for drinks but we only really wanted to deal with Our waiter. Unlike our waiter who was dealing amazingly with what i could only describe as “his section/tables”, the other staff seemed to have no idea as to what areas they were doing as they were all over the restaurant.
I would recommend Angus to anyone, and would recommend you ask for our waiter.
Great price, great food, and exceptional Waiter which is the way every Restaurant should be run. He was Fantastic. The down side was, when we went to pay, who i could only describe as a Manager, or someone who has no idea how to run a Restaurant. He had an unprofessional manner when he spoke to us, and kept interupting us while speaking to someone on a walkytalky. we got interupted three times without an appoligy. Unlike our waiter, he was useless.
All in all, that Manager should be kept to an office and kept away from Customers.
The waiter however, he needs a medal for our amazing night out.

Excellent food – really tender steak which couldn’t be faulted. Service in the bar was fantastic, very friendly and knowledgeable.

However, table service was really disappointing. We were in a party of around 15 and ordered with no problems. When the food came out, the rather loud waiter would just stand at the head of the table and yell “Sirloin. Medium Rare!”. If nobody answered immediately he would get stroppy and yell louder. We all had to claim our meals as he yelled across the table – really poor service. Other restaurants manage to figure out which person which meal goes to and Angus needs to sort out a system for doing the same. (nobody at our table had changed places – it should have been straight forward).

Add to that the stroppy waiter’s insistence that we order coffees before dessert and you’ll get the picture.

So all up, food 10/10, bar service 10/10, table service 3/10.

Went to Angus on Thursday 9th and then again Frtiday 10th for dinner with my wife. Extremely happy with the food and the service was great. On the Thursday we got to experience the downstairs dining and the Friday night we were seated upstairs. The supervisor even explained they like their customers to “enjoy and experience all that angus has to offer”! And we did! We will be back

My friends and I visited Moonbar a couple of weeks ago and were subjected to the unprovoked abuse from bar staff as mentioned in some of these other reviews. The service was so bad we were waiting for Ashton Kutcher to jump out and tell us we were punked. The shouting match audible over loud house music between one of the bar staff and a female (staff member?) was a highlight of the evening. I can’t comment on the food but the furnishing, separated areas and lighting is excellent pity about the attitude of the staff. I would actively discourage anyone from going to Moon Bar there are plently of other very good bars in Dunedin, while they may not be so flashy it’s all about service.

After visiting Moon bar i will never return and will tell people to do the same. I have worked in Hospitality for the last six years and after a dinner that was just ridiculous and the abuse i got from the bar staff on both occasions i tried to buy a drink i couldnt believe the place was still running. The waiter, while nice had absolutely no idea what he was doing, a table of ten people should not be that hard to deal with. The food took a long time and came out with big gaps in the service. They never returned after to offer us drinks or check how the food was. The waiters should have some idea of who ordered what to avoid all of the confusion between steaks as we ended up having to sort out our own meals and pass them back and forth down the table. I went to the bar and after waiting half an hour for a glass of wine i asked when i would be served and subsequently got abused back. this was ridiculous and happened once more through out the night. the place is a joke, such a gorgeous bar and restaurant setting, the basic food is there its just a shame no one knows how to run it properly.

I had an expectation of this eatery to be classy with good food, this has since changed.
On inspection of the menu before dining at Angus i thought “oh great, ill be able to go out and have a decent steak”. The wait staff were terrible, don’t get me wrong they were pleasant but clearly had not received adequate training to be let loose in the restaurant. The music was blaring, one wait member would turn it down only for another to crank it back up- the music was inappropriate for a restaurant anyway. I was with a group of 14 and the table had one salt and pepper shaker between us, the meals came out staggered in time (probably 15 mins from the first to last), the staff would bring out one meal at a time and there was about three of them serving our table. The waiter ended up giving me the wrong meal and had to swap it with someone else’s. The steaks were only just warm. The steak was cooked as i asked and the sauce of the day was nice, however, i would expect an “Angus Coleslaw” to be something made on site, but there was no mistaking this coleslaw for something straight out of a packet and slapped onto the plate. I didn’t bother to order desert because to be honest i didn’t think it was worth the risk of more disappointment. For somewhere “reasonably” priced i would expect a lot more.

I am a bit confused as to why the comment number has significantly decreased on this website , never before have i felt the urge to join one of these forums but i am also a strong believer of freedom of speech – it is a right guaranteed to us by the government . Comments highlighting the recent mishap on behalf of the angusteakshouse/moon bar and to draw attention to some uninformed facts that are available on this website . I was also part of a dinner dining at angus steakhouse on saturday the 14th of may and instead of being disgruntled of the polite girls and party members asking me to leave before service was over – i felt sorry for them. I was confused when first approached by them to move on but after i heard the staff arguing with them i discovered the real reason – it was double if not triple booked. The graduation table i overheard had been booked months in advance and after i heard the wait staff allowing no sorry encouraging the memberss of the 21st to tell us and the other diners to move on . the food was ok but slow , the restaurant itself a lovely set up but the unprofessional ism was unbelievable . i would suggest spending your money ealse where.

I’ve never felt compelled to bother joining one of these sites for the bother, but the service received here recently was that atrocious that I feel everyone needs to know about it. The two reviews below were clearly left at instruction of the manager after other poor reviews have been left on here of late – and somehow been subsequently removed?! Attended my friend’s 21st on Saturday 14th of May. They were obviously trying to monopolise the fact it was grad nite as they had us double (triple?) booked, which meant the whole evening was disjointed – another party was still in our room when we had it booked, and random members of the public were everywhere in the bar, also getting drinks on our bar tab. Staff were less than accommodating and nor were they apologetic for this huge muck up. Their rudeness was blatant and disgusting from a supposed ‘premium cocktail bar’ (good joke); ignoring members of our party when we tried to order spirits at the main bar (bar set up for us – albeit an hour late – didn’t have spirits) the pretentious staff simply ignored us, too absorbed in their perceived drink-making skills to deal to paying customers. Furthermore, food which was ordered never came out – something which the manager nonchalantly mentioned to another customer last week, without realising the person actually knew us! The general consensus from everybody I have spoken to (peoples’ friends, family members etc) is that this place is the most poorly run ridiculous excuse for a bar/restaurant, saying the manager forgets orders/drinks regularly and is of rude temperament. As stated, this was the most horrendous service ever received, and you should all pay heed to the reviews further down about how crap this outfit is!!!

We had the pleasure to dine at Angus on Saturday night. From the minute we stepped in the door it was amazing. We dined downstairs. The waiter was great, friendly and attentive. He chatted to us making us feel right at home and relaxed, and to our daughter who had just graduated and was still in her gown, he showed a genuine interest in her studies and achievements. He told us the specials etc, and took our food and drink orders. All our food was to an excellent, high standard, we couldnt have faulted any of it… Angus is one of those places that you leave, vowing to come back, because there was so much on the menu that you want to try, both off the dinner menu and the lunch menu. The atmosphere is fantastic and the chairs are really comfy. The downstairs was really busy, but we never felt that, the spacing between tables is great. Every staff member we came in contact with was friendly and professional. All in all a fantastic night, and we cant wait to come back, keep up the good work guys! (Try the pork belly if its on as a special, its the best Ive every had, but the rest of the party were happy with their perfectly cooked steaks (as they ordered) and my daughters havent stopped talking about the nana chicken). We hesitated booking this restaurant due to some of the reviews on this site, all I can say is give Angus a go, we are now looking for an excuse to go back to Dunedin to dine there again………….keep up the good work Angus!

*Update*: I am amused by the postings after mine, and the venom and hate that ooses from every word of it and other similar postings. I do not know what happened on the night you dined, as so, nor do you on my night, although I tell the truth in the fact that we had a damn good night with excellent top quality food and service….. but when you feel the need to accuse me of being ‘ put up to it’ by management, I take that as highy offensive. You cannot possible know how good bad or indifferent my night was, as you were not there…. I have dined in many different styles and types of restaurants from good old pub grub to fine dining establishments, here and overseas and I know when I have had a good meal. I stand by every word I have written and do recommend readers giving this establishment a go. I have no connection with management, staff etc, i dont even live in the same part of nz…….Good luck Angus, we will be back (gotta have that pork belly and mash again)You can have a bad meal/night/experience at any restaurant, restaurants are only as good as their chef and staff and food on the night, but it is my opinion that there is more going on with some of these reviews than just a bad night…….

I was in the restaurant last Saturday and part of a graduation booking. Everything went well with our service and even with our meal, our food was served fast though the restaurant was really full pack. Everyone was very happy and well attended by the staff members of the restaurant. Actually, the worse experience we had that night was when this 21st party was trying to kick us out of the dining area wherein the restaurant night service is not yet finished? the members of the group started to push the table so they can set up, but the manager and other staff members tried to stop them since the night service is not yet done. The group tried their luck to argue, that’s why the manager and the staff insisted that the night service is not yet finished. I don’t think doing the right thing which is courtesy to other customers is a rude thing to do? So i would say, the dinner service was pretty well and we enjoyed it, and will recommend this to anyone else, will definitely come back. Don’t be bothered about what this people are saying, they’re quite bitter, might be because they were refused to have a drink. The law states, intoxicated person will not be served.!!!!

We visited Angus Steak House last weekend when my parents were in town for a family get together. The night was a fantastic success. We ordered several highlander fillets which were cooked to perfection in each dish. We also ordered the lamb shanks which were melt off the bone delicious. And finally my mother ordered the salmon which was a huge serving and also absolutely tasty.

The wine selection was very good, and we had several bottles of Central Otago Pinot recommended by our waiter which were excellent quality and a reasonable price.

Although the restaurant was busy (we visited on a friday), the service was exemplary. We were visited regularly by our waiter for meal checks, but not so much that it felt overbearing, and orders were taken and delivered promptly.

My parents left Dunedin very happy people, and our reunion was a great success, aided by the great food and service we received. I can highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a reasonably priced meal in a beautiful setting. We will be back!

My friends and I decided to come over despite of some negative reviews. We visited Angus last Saturday night even without a booking. Luckily, we were able to manage to get a sit though the restaurant was really busy. The service was prompt and everyone was accommodating and pleasant. Our orders was served quite fast and the meals come in big servings and cooked based on our request. Food presentation was fantastic and the steak was really yummy (fillet) “melting in your mouth” as well as the “fish of the day”,a must try meal in this restaurant though its a steak house. We really enjoyed the food and great service. We will definitely come back and recommend this to other friends. I would really say, reading negative reviews is not worth at all but go and have your own great experience.

Unfortunately the service was unbelievably bad! We arrived promptly at 6:30 for our booking and were told we would have to vacate the table by 8pm for the next booking. Then we were left for 20 minutes – no welcome, no water, no glasses, no starter! We spent the rest of the night having to ask for water, for the table to be cleared and for service generally. And then only 5 of 6 meals came out! It gets worse – 25 minutes AFTER the mix up was identified, the waitress came and said it would be ANOTHER 15 minutes until the missing meal was ready! Our poor dinner mate was so embarassed and hungry by this time and didn’t want her meal! The restaurant did redeem itself slightly in giving us a further free meal and not charging for the one starter and two corkages, and the seafood meal was excellent (the steaks were average and they also forgot the salads!), but really the entire night was a complete disaster!

I had heard from others that the meals were fantastic though service needed a shake up. Unfortunately the rumors were true.

Ive never experienced worse service than this. Firstly they couldn’t get the side salads right, sent back twice(no sauce and without onions was an issue for them) then the waitress had forgot ton what steaks were medium and medium rare when she brought them to the table. we had to work it out for ourselves. We did have a table of 13 so we didn’t worry to much at the time.

Though one thing that annoyed us was if everyone had finished eating the table should be cleared. Even taking our coffee orders afterwards, plates remained on the table from our main courses. I stacked them myself and moved to the table beside ours.

In short it just seamed like to many tables with inexperienced staff.
Not that i expected fine dining but there was some sort of kids play pen in the restaurant???

Food tasted great though….that gets a star :)

We went here for dinner a few weeks ago and the overall experience was pretty good.
We both really enjoyed our mains – steak and chicken – and were impressed with the size of the meals. I ordered the small chicken meal and it was plenty big enough, and at a price of $24, pretty good value I thought.
For dessert we shared a tiramisu, which was HUGE, but not very much like a tiramisu as I know it. it was pretty average.
The service was good, but not outstanding. We had to wait a long while before getting our orders taken and then it only happened because we flagged someone down to take our orders. Seemed slightly disorganised, but staff were all friendly and polite.
Moon Bar was great as always.

Had lunch with work colleagues and I ordered Seafood Chowder and French Fries. I asked at the counter what sauces came with the fries and I was told both aioli and tomato sauce.
When the waitress brought out the cutlery on the plates, one of the plates has a hair on it.
The serving of the meals were quick (10 to 15 mins), however when my fries came out there were no sauces. I asked the waitress for the sauce and I had to wait for 15 mins. Only the tomato sauce arrived and I asked if I could have the aioli sauce and the waitress said this sauce doesn’t come with fries.
Either the communication is not clear or staff are not trained properly to know the menu and what comes with what – this was the letdown.

I have been hanging out to have a meal at the Angus Steak House. When you think Steak House, you tend to think amazing steak. Two of us had had a steak meal and we were extremely disappointed. We both asked for medium rare and got rare. The meat was tough and took a bit of work to get through. only the last few bites were cooked properly. I have had good Angus Beef in Scotland and this didn’t even come slightly close. I cant see us going back again.

We went back last Thursday night without a booking, the Restaurant was really busy and almost fully booked, we were asked to have a sit in the bar area while organizing a table for us since we don’t have a booking. After 5-7 minutes of waiting, we got a table, we were happy to hear that they are apologetic for the waiting for the table. Everyone was very attentive, they provided menus and got our drinks, entree and main orders. Service was prompt and our meals was prepared and cooked as our request. Some of the menus have already changed from our last visit, but we got the same value and good presentation. Service was really great and we enjoyed our night. This is our 3rd time to visit the Restaurant but we haven’t had any concern or problem with our meals and the service as the other was saying. It is worth coming back again and we will recommend this to other friends.

Went there for a work do early December. Had to wait 90 minutes for the entree, and some people at our table didn’t get theirs at all. The seafood main was pretty awful, and they ran out of most of the options on the desert menu. Service was rushed due to what appeared to be under staffing. The environment was incredibly noisy and stressful. I will not go there again.

Very average food, poor presentation, below average wait staff (who was the manager), no knowledge of the wines they serve. High price for average experience.

I recently took my family to Angus Steakhouse. The staff at Angus are friendly and the environment is vibrant and cheerful. The decor is an attractive blend of modern and traditional and makes the restaurant a very pleasant place to be in. There is also a very stylish bar nestled in the restaurant which I am keen to try out at a later stage.

As for our meals we all had steak, including the kids, and were totally impressed by our meals. The steak was so tender and delicious and by no means small, they were as good as the smell we encountered parking the car outside!

I was more than happy with the meals and service and will definitely be going back.

Angus Steakhouse is sure to become an institution in Dunedin.

Our first impression of Angus Steakhouse was mildly impressive, however was quite busy which meant the service was possibly rushed
Upon our return to Angus we noticed a calmer atmosphere and more attentive staff. We (4 guests) tried the steak, and although the selection of cuts is small, they were all cooked to our liking with perfection. Truly melt in your mouth material!
Also sampling some amazing chowder, we all were very impressed with the flavour and quality of the meals and delighted with the friendly bustle of this unique restaurant.
(Our comic mate Stu suggests putting an Angus stew on the menu)
Overall very happy with the meal and dining experience and will be sure to visit Angus again.

3 of us went to the Angus Steakhouse for the first time and after reading various reviews I was a little hesitant, but I must say we had a fab evening. The decor is stylish, modern, clean (I noticed an A class stardard) with good background music. We were seen to straight away for a wine order followed by our food order. The waitress was polite and attentive to us all evening, checking on each course. The courses came out quickly and we found each of us enjoyed our courses (which are very big in size and we were unable to finish). The meals resemble the size and style of the Lone star but cheaper in price and without the overload of wedges, so you definitely walk out full. For the experience we had – I would recommend this as a dining experience, for any group size and I noticed it was also kid friendly.

Absolutely dreadful service, food was overcooked and when I mentioned to waitress no acknowledgement from management. All our plates were inspected (quite openly) when table was eventually cleared but still no acknowledgement and when I paid the maitre’d argued with me in front of other diners. Drink orders were taken sparingly and no desert or coffee menu was offered. I wouldn’t return to this restaurant and dont recommend it.

So many people had said how great the Angus Steak house was so I arranged a night out with a group of friends. Well we were very disappointed with our experience and it would be very unlikely that we will every go back. The staff were not very friendly or helpful. The meals take a long time to appear and when they did, things looked great until we tried to cut into it. Our meals were very over cooked to the point that some of us couldn’t eat much of it. One of our group did say something, but they didn’t really seem that worried about it at all. What seemed to be the manager; who was telling one of his staff off just across from were we were sitting and we are still waiting to see the dessert or coffee menu. When it came time to pay the manager was unsympathetic and really didn’t want to know. When one of my friends said again how bad the meals was and that she was not that happy to pay for it, his reply was “Well you did eat it”. She replyed with, “No I didn’t”. He then went on to try and over charge her. She did stand her ground with him and he did reduce the price for her. One of the group also had to make two EFTPOS payments one for his meals, and one for his drinks as manager said he couldn’t add the two together, the rest of us only had to make one payment; still trying to work that one out. So all in all, not very pleased with our experience of the Angus Steak House.

We dined at the Angus last night as a group, we were all very excited about having a delicious steak cooked to perfection, and considering in their menu there is actually a “steak doneness guide” with pictures one assumed they knew how to cook a steak medium-rare. How wrong were we???
It was a relatively busy night with another table of about our size upstairs along with quite a few smaller tables, but even still when it took an hour for our meals to arrive, we started to wonder if it was a ploy to get more money flowing through the bar.
When our food finally arrived everyone cut in with anticipation, which was quickly met with total disappointment when we realised that all 8 of our steaks were very very over cooked, our waitress came to check if “everyone had the right meal” when one person at our table mentioned her steak was quite over she offered to take it back and get a new one but after waiting an hour for the first she was very hungry and didn’t want to risk waiting another hour for a burnt offering. To overcook a piece of meat like an Angus steak is sacrilege especially when your paying between $29 and $33! Needless to say we will go back to Moon bar for cocktails but will not hurry back to the restaurant

The wait staff were a disappointment as I expected to be served with a bit more enthusiasm and passion but I came out of the restaurant wondering if the standard of service in Dunedin is much lower than the rest of the world and if it is because this is such a laxed out town?? I felt like I had to please the wait staff and make their job easier to serve me than the other way around.
The one waitress we did have wasnt fully aware of the certain details of the specials on that night and had to keep going back and forth to find the answers to our questions. Maybe it was because she was new or a temp, but either way it helps to be fully prepared for any question a diner may have.
I was pleased with the wine recommendations according to the food I had ordered and knew the bar staff knew what they were talking about.
It did take a while for our food to arrive but it could have been because they also were cooking for people seated upstairs that I wasnt aware of at the time. It does take awhile to get the attention of the wait staff.
Overall I found the food lovely, especially the coleslaw, ribs, fries and side salad. I would recommend the food to everybody but the service is questionable, depending on diners expectations.
I give it 3 stars because of the interior decor, it has a great bar, the menu is somewhat comprehensive, the prices are a bit on the high side.

The only thing that let’s the place down is the service, went there tonight and the young blonde girl spent more time playing with her hair than working
Always nice to know that her hands that had spent most the night in her hair, was the same hands carrying our plates out and drinks aswell

Huge wait for orders to be taken, then 20 minutes after we ordered the waitress came back and told us what we ordered was not available. This should have been made clear at the outset. Poor selection of wines – over half of the wine menu was also unavailable.

Food was average – just about anyone could have made it. Overpriced.

Service terrible. Waitress left the table at least twice while we were trying to order, not polite or apologetic when telling us just about everything we wanted was “unavailable”.

Would never go back.

Well I’m not normally one to complain or write reviews but after the service issues we had at the Angus Steak House and the extreme lack of inaction and concern by the management once we had brought it to their attention, well they forced my hand. The evening was going pretty well the drinks, food were fine we had just finished our mains and had ordered another round of drinks. Now all night the rounds had been the same so to our surprise the one mixed we had been receiving (possibly the 5th or the 6th) was different than we had been ordering. So next time a waiter passed by we asked him to take it away and bring us back a fresh one the same as all the previous ones, not thinking much of it giving them the benefit of the doubt whats one slip up in a otherwise great evening only to be set upon by a rather drunk bar manager. He was not impressed at all and adamant he had made the drink correct when he hadn’t and wouldn’t listen to reason and became rather unreasonably called us “a bunch of doofusses” and then walked about 3m away and started to talk about us rather unkindly with other bar staff whilst we could still hear. Now this was to much so we asked for the check and prepared to leave, one of the people we were out with asked to speak to the manager and then asked her to have the man come out and apologise of which we were told he was no where to be found. So the next day this still really grating us we called and complained and to there credit the said they would look into it and called us back and all they really wanted to do was give us a voucher which would of been useless as we had no intention of ever going back, so all we asked for was what we wanted that night a apology in writing from the man concerned. Then having told us they would see what they could do and would get back to us to which they didn’t and took two weeks and some chasing on our behalf to be told no it wasn’t going to happen. All in all the sourest taste left in my mouth by any business in Dunedin.

Good decoration but unique layout. Very interesting.

Service was Very very bad. Waiters ignoring us since we went in. They were busy gossiping and folding the napkins. They saw us but just ignore that we were at the door.. waiting to be served.

One of the waiter, who served us, very rude and arrogant. We all were not Impressed! He looked like he doesn’t want to serve us. I never seen this bad service ever in this town for this type of restaurant. My husband was still eating his salad.. the waiter grabbed his plate away without asking if my husband finish his meal…. another incident. One of the meat was accidentally dropped into wine glass .. when he collected the dirty plate.. we told him oh sorry about the wine glass that it was dirty. He sigh and took grab the wine glass and dump the meat in the plate and banged the wine glass on the table (very loudly). He must be angry that we made a mess… *I was shocked with his rude behavior. He acted worst than any waiter I ever seen in my entire life!

We had to send 2 steaks back as it was over cooked, cold mash potato. (Table next to us also sent Steak back to kitchen..) The second attempt wasn’t too bad. I got seafood meal. Not as bad as steak but not good either.. Salmon was ok, risotto was a bit over cook. but prawn (not fresh, some over cook and some overcook).. bad display.. Pretty disappointed …

Beef only have 3 choices.. :( 1 seafood choice.. oh our friend had Vegetarian – Food was tasteless and only have 1 choice.

$32.00 for a piece of meat and slop of mash potato and horrible service.. we definitely not going back.

He was a waiter from hell! We should have listen our friend who warned us not to go there.

Angus is a trendy looking place with modern decor, dim moody lighting and a wide array of underground music setting the scene. I was happy just chilling to the mixture of acid-jazz and breakbeats playing.

To Angus’s credit they provide a DONENESS guide, as in done a steak is according to the usual descriptors – rare, medium, well done etc etc. It even comes with photos and a percentage as to the amount of pink you should have – all of which is very hard to make out because of the dim moody lighting. BUT at least you have some confidence in knowing that they should at least know how your steak should look.

You expect with a steakhouse that there may be a few more than just 3 steaks and that they might have a few weight varieties too. You get a choice of 3 Angus steaks and they are either 250gm or 300gm. Steak isn’t the only thing on the menu though. BUT you can’t really go to a steakhouse and not order steak. There is a sauce of the day which changes depending on how whoever it is that makes that decision is feeling. On this day it was bacon and herb.

I generally ask for my steaks well done knowing that most places under-cook. I braved my chances and went for medium well. Again because of the dim moody lighting it was hard to tell whether they had managed the ever so slight pink, but it seemed a bit more well done, in saying that, I don’t mind well done.

The meal was accompanied with coleslaw, which you expect to be dry and tasteless as it is in most steakhouses, but this was probably one of the better coleslaw’s.

The place is obviously popular, but at least one staff member could use a few tips in how to sell a meal. People at another table near us asked a waiter to tell them about the steak meals and his response was “We’re a steakhouse, it’s what we do best”. The guy wont ever be a car salesman … “its a car, it goes vrooom” probably wouldn’t net him Sales Person of the Month.

All in all, its a nice place with good food (and good music mostly). Would happily go back.

For a steak house the meat was poorly cooked. The fillet was dry and cold; when the meat was cut there were no juices running out of it. It appeared to have been ‘set aside’ for quite some time prior to being served. The ribeye was slightly better but covered in a sauce to disguise the amateur cooking attempt. Overall, I’d prefer to stay home and barbeque my own steak!

Set-up was gorgeous. Warm & good lighting.
There were only 3 steaks to choose from, not disappointing but did expect a variety of steaks to choose from. Wine was delicious. Service was very very friendly and pleasant. Would definitely go again.

We had dinner on Friday night and it was wonderful. We both has the highland fillet and they were cooked just right and really tender! We had a great bottle of wine and we also took our two year old who loved the toys. Next time we’ll get a babysitter and check out the bar as well!

Very well set up. A semi covered smoking area with fireplace and sofas.
Family dining area, well set up bar and also more personal dining area up the front to get a break from family with young kids.
Very similar menu to lone star.
Meal wise, unfortunately a bad experience with the Black Angus rib eye, ordered in medium rare but is the most under cooked steak i have ever seen.
Also vegetarian main was very tasteless.
