The venue is perfect for functions, with superb sound and lighting as well as a dance floor. Whether it’s a dance party, gathering of friends/family or a group dinner, BBQ, buffet or a la carte meal, Africa – Highland Park is the ideal venue. There is a large outdoor area too.
The menu is extensive, with a broadly NZ selection of dishes and some African touches, particularly in the hugely popular Bar Africa sauces. Steaks, ribs and burgers are a speciality, along with stone-baked gourmet pizzas. All meals are prepped fresh from NZ produce. Pizzas and most menu items are also available take away.

Atmosphere is good. Staff really need to give the place a good clean. Tables are really dirty and sticky and the floor yuck. It’s just as sticky as the tables.

Would not take the risk of eating there if the cleanness on the front line is anything to go by, imagine the kitchen.

We have been to Bar Africa 3 times during the world cup games. It was awesome!!!! I loved the feeling of “being at home”. The interior is nicely set up, there is a convienent smoking area, enough screens to watch sport, and mostly – so many South Africans!!!!! the food was great, and they are reasonably priced. The atmosphere during the game time, was like no other place. Even my Kiwi partner got a true taste os the SA Culture and togetherness. The staff was friendly, very accomodating and they sold “Black Label”….lol.
Its truely a place I would recommend, game time or not.

Food good but service poor due to understaffing. Meals arrived 10 minutes+ apart for a table of 7. Wine (pinot noir)stored at room/kitchen temperature on a sweltering day – they need to do homework on room temperature

My sister and a few friends from work called into Africa about a month a go for a ‘couple’ after work. None of us had been here before and we wanted to try something different. Our intentions were to have a few quite beers/wines after work then head home. We stayed until midnight. Loved the place. Atmosphere, service and food were exceptional. They had Karaoke that night and we had so much fun and made new friends. As an Events Co ordinator, I have recommended this place as a venue for many functions.

I can only suggest more heating, in going with the theme of this place, maybe an outdoor firepit, for cold evenings.

Its our new local and as SHIKIRA said… ‘This one’s for AFRICA’ xx

Visited the bar recently (June 2010) came for a Friday drink.

Friendly staff – yes. I also quite liked karaoke.

Style is very eclectic, yes, there are Africa-theme pictures, hippos etc but the entire feeling was not comfortable…

Not good choice of wines. They sell good wine by bottles, but I didn’t want a bottle! Only cheapest wine was sold by glasses – didn’t take a risk (never tried before). And probably I was wrong – beer I bought (in a bottle) was definitely not fresh and later this evening I felt bad and my partner too…

Can say nothing about food – didn’t try.

Doubt I’ll go there again…

The food was really brilliant – just what you want after a few cocktails when you get a bit peckish. Beautifully presented and very tasty. They must have a good cook at this place.
