I dropped in to Bean on Thames for a mid-morning coffee soon after arriving in Oamaru for a day’s business last week. The coffee was excellent – espresso served as it should be (short with a jug of hot water, and even the offer of more water if I should want it). The freshly baked scroll was delicious, too. So impressed was I with the tempting array of food on display that I returned at lunchtime – and then succumbed to my weakness for a good old mutton pie and chips. Now, as all good Southern Men know, there are mutton pies and mutton pies, but these ones, made in-house, are to die for! What’s more, the chips, served on a separate plate, were no ordinary chips. They were wedges… of the highest order. And not only that – they were served with sour cream and a delightful chilli salsa. Talk about under-promising and over-delivering! Oamaruvians are privileged to have this cafe. But they already know that – I could tell by the number of locals eating lunch there.
