When I got the news you were closing the best Restaurant in New Zealand. I was a little bit disappointed And i must say to close such a fine dining experience just so you could retire to ride your motor bike is admirable and much admired .

This is a restaurant well worth travelling to, if you live outside the Hutt Valley – even Wellingtonians can brave it and drive further than Wadestown! The atmosphere is welcoming, relaxing and subdued, and the hostess extremely knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly. The menu is small but well-planned, with some standards as well as some newer tastes: for example, we started with a meltingly smooth duck paté, followed by mussel cakes and smoked salmon wontons (like no wonton you’ve ever eaten), then perfectly rare and succulent venison and steak, with interesting accompaniments (also fish, chicken or vegetarian for mains), and a superb Grant Burge Barossa shiraz that led to nostalgia for home. The menu is seasonal, and the latest iteration not always online. We enjoyed a slowly-paced, excellently prepared and beautifully presented meal in historic surroundings (variously a brothel for the army, a hotel, boarding house and so on). Full marks to “Mr and Mrs Bell” (aka Phil and Judy).

We went to Bell House to celebrate our anniversary a couple of weeks back. I’d often seen it from the train window and thought it looked nice. When you arrive you have to ring the bell to be let in, which is a nice a touch as it is the owner’s house as well. The service was very friendly and attentive and the food was excellent. We both had three courses which were well presented and delicious. Along with this there were three complimentary extras: a small pumpkin soup, some homemade bread and a scoop of homemade sorbet; all of which were a nice touch and delicious. Including a bottle of wine, the bill was $180, which we felt was very reasonable especially in comparison to fine dining in central Wellington. We were very impressed and will definitely return.

Bell House – our Restaurant of choice over many years to celebrate special occasions – why would you want to travel into the city when we have this real gem here in Upper Hutt.
Recently our daughter was home for a visit from Australia – Her wish as always is to dine at Bell House, so we dined as a family including friends – A faultless meal and service, absolutely beautiful food.
Thank you Phil and Judi for the many enjoyable times we have had, and hope to continue to have at Bell House.

My husband and I dined at Bell House on Saturday evening to celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary – we wanted to go somewhere ‘special’ and knew that Bell House was that ‘special’ place – and we were not disappointed. The meal was superb and the people are very welcoming and friendly. We have dined here on a number of occasions and introduced friends to the restaurant as well and have never been disappointed. Well done Bell House we’ll be back again soon !!

Fantastic from start to finish, supurb friendly and professional service and food was faultless. I think the little added touches really make this place special – greeted at the door, chefs complimentary starters etc.

This really is a hidden gem and I would recommend it to anyone. Well worth the trip to the hut.

Recently had dinner here, and omg I highly recommend it. Pressing the door bell just set the evening, we were welcomed in and ushered to our table. There was one table spare and I thought “hmm how long will we be waiting to be served”..we waited 2 mins for the menu to arrive, we looked at the menu (5mins) during this time our waiter brought over Beautifully crumbed prawns (not ordered) and then brought over some breads (5mins) as we were still looking at the menu.
Our order was taken within 15 mins of arrival, we had our starters/Main/Dessert served within an hour and half! Impressive! Food was devine, absolute fine dining, tasty, beautifully presented and the prices were very well priced. I really liked the idea that all mains were priced the same whether it be steak/fish/chicken.
You have to try this place, but book its really popular, and now I can see why.
Defintely heading back here, the sooner the better

Just celebrated a wedding anniversary here, and it was great. The meal was incredible with that perfect blend of flavour and texture. I can highly recommend the chicken livers on black pudding! The wine list was sophisticated and a pleasure to choose quality wine by the glass. Service was second to none, unobtrusive but quick and efficient. They found time to converse, answer questions and accept suggestions all with a smile. The ambiance was delightful and whilst the restaurant was busy we never felt that our romantic evening was impinged upon by other diners.
We eat out a lot and I would rate this restaurant as one of the best in the Wellington region. Will certainly be returning.

I have tried a lot of restaurants around the Wellington region, trying to find the perfect place, regardless of price.
Bell House is without a doubt my favourite place for a romantic dinner.
The food and service is incredible, and the price is quite reasonable.

I concur with Dwayne’s review above. The Bell House is a great little restaurant and is as good as any of the top eateries in Wellington. If you are looking for special place to take your lady (or man) for a romantic dinner take her/him here. The food is real good and the service is spot on. And all this in Trentham, Upper Hutt.

Overall fantastic dining experience. I recommend the Bell house to anyone wanting a great night out with mouth watering food!
