This is in Response to Laurian: I have always come to Bellagio not only because its amazing free range and organic food but for the friendly service…I am surprised you actually went there to bully these people. Asking for overcooked poached eggs? Why didnt you ask for hard boiled eggs. I have been pregnant twice and this is nonsense! Good on them for standing up for themselves. I have worked 15 years in hospitality and no, we are not mind readers! You should have said you were pregnant.

My partner and I recently went to Bellagio for brunch. I ordered Eggs Benedict, and an extra hot decaf trim latte. I also requested that the eggs be cooked hard, hard hard, and stated that when the chef though they were done s/he should give them another minute to be certain. I said this because of the number of times I have requested this, and the eggs have still arrived semi (or very) soft in the yolk – which is an absolute no-no for pregnant women.

I did not state that I was pregnant – I simply asked for my eggs and coffee to be served to me in a certain way. I would have thought this was much the same as asking for my steak to be medium, or my fried eggs over-easy.

The meal came, and it was just as I had ordered it. We ate, and as my partner was at the counter paying the bill the woman who’d served me came up to the table and told me not to come back to this restaurant as I would be refused service for my rudeness. I was stunned, and asked her what she meant. She said: “You don’t come in here and tell the chef how to cook eggs, or the barista how to make coffee. Don’t come in here again because we won’t serve you”.

Interesting – in the 14 years I spent working in the hospitality industry I was always of the understanding that the customer gets their meal the way they like it – particulalry if its something as simple as “please overcook my poached eggs”!

We have told numerous people this story and all were shocked. I was in early pregnancy – I would have thought the life of my unborn child is more important than the chef or barista’s ego, whether it was obvious that I was pregnant or not!
