Honestly? This place wasn’t bad a year or two ago. The prices were okay for what you got, and i would go there for the omelette breakfast on the odd morning when I felt flush enough to shell out $13+. The gingerbread was lovely and affordable and the service was good.
I can’t say the same anymore. Firstly – the prices are horrible. A pie is $4.50 and it’s _tiny_. Lunch items hover around $15-$20 and filter coffee in a small cup is $3.50.
I had the omelette a couple of months ago and it was soggy in the middle and the toast was dry and poorly buttered. The coffee was passable. Just a few weeks ago I had a steak and mushroom pie. It was bar none the worst pie I have ever eaten. The pastry was as hard as a rock, there were thin strips of beef swimming in a tiny bit of thick gravy with a few wilted looking mushrooms. I couldn’t finish it. It was awful.
Even the gingerbread isn’t what it used to be. I don’t eat the lunch menu items since having a disappointing experience with an expensive plate of very mediocre nachos, so i can’t comment. I also don’t eat the sandwiches. However their pies are awful – and the prices are far too steep for what you get.

This place is an old fashioned sandwich bar and if you are after fresh sandwiches and slices then I recommend you eat here. If you are after a gourmet 5 star lunch then you will be disappointed.
It rates as one of my favourite cheap and cheerful cafe’s and I eat here regularly. My standard order is a chicken salad, which while not fancy, is always fresh and enjoyable. I don’t eat mince pies or fries so can not comment on their quality.
I’ve had them cater a couple of working lunches (filled rolls, fruit & slices) and have had good feedback from clients. Dont let the fact that english is their second language put you off, they are lovely people.

I have eaten here a few times before but that was about a year ago. It must have changed hands since then as the food is absolutely horrible. It was 1pm and I had a steak and mushroom pie and a plate of fries. The pie was revolting so much so that I simply could not finish it (a first as I can normally get through even my mother in laws cooking on most attempts) and the fries, although ok, were $6. I made a comment on the standard of food before I left but I’m unsure they understood what I was saying. A tick in the box for the worst cafe in Wellington bar NONE. Will not be returning unless every other food outlet south of Palmerston North has been closed down. Unfortunately I had to add one star (poor) as that was the MINIMUM. I couldn’t find any negative stars.

I would not wish this place on my worst enemy.
My boyfriend and I both ordered the chicken camembert and bacon burger and we also got a side of fries.
The burger bun was hard as rock, there was one tiny piece of cheese in each burger and there was hardly any chicken and what was in there looked undercooked and was pushed to the side for the sake of our health. The bacon was also undercooked and mainly consisted of fat and the lettuce was limp and manky looking.
The fries were still hard and uneatable. We ended up just going to Burger King instead.
This is the one place I have eaten/attempted to eat at where I’ve wanted to write abusive messages in tomato sauce on the table before leaving just so this place knows how horrible they are.
Avoid Boulevard Cafe at all costs.
