The relaxed atmosphere of The Brick House Restaurant feels just right within this beautiful old historic building, just across from the Royal Wanganui Opera House.

Wholesome kiwi-style meals & desserts are fully prepared onsite, with homestyle roasts, succulent steaks & seafood plus many other dishes. Mains are served with your choice of salad & chips or six fresh vegetables.

Desserts such as apple crumble, steamed pud & custard, pavlova-roll, bread & butter pudding and Brick House’s signature lemon meringue pie, are all prepared fresh on the premises, along with a further selection on the daily menu which changes regularly.

You’ll enjoy a varied wine list, along with beer, spirits, and other non-alcoholic beverages.
Note that drinks are purchased at the bar, and Diners order and pay at the counter, after which the friendly staff will deliver your orders to the table. Staff and patrons alike enjoy this as everyone gets the chance to chat with each other and the casual friendly atmosphere makes for a relaxing time out!

Families will enjoy the opportunity to eat out together at a reasonable price with family-friendly menu options.
Groups can pay all in one account or individually.

The private function room offers seating for up to 40 (or 60 for mixed standing/sitting).

Fantastic venue with food and service to match. Extremely well priced with a great selection. A credit to the owners and the team . Nothing is ever to much trouble – well done Brick House, we will continue to frequent you often! Don’t miss the opportunity to visit this amazing building and equally great food and service.

Had a lovely lunch here for my sisters birthday. The prawn cocktail looked a little limp but the steak soon made up for that and was cooked to perfection. Seemed to be missing part of the steak though as it appeared to be halved?? However had a really good experience here and would recommend.

Hi Aaron, we are glad that overall you enjoyed your lunch with us. We do serve a smaller steak at lunchtime as some of our older customers just can’t manage a full size steak, maybe this was the one you ordered. Thanks for taking time to give us your feedback.    More »

Went to a family get together a couple of weeks ago, what a fantastic night out. The food was really good, fresh, well presented and plenty of it!!! I had the warm beef salad followed by a chocolate pudding, both tasty and obviously not brought in. Nice and warm and a very cool old building. Would definately go back next time I go to Wanganui.

The savoury rissoles here are so good I had to complain to the management that someone had not recommended them! I don’t know why it never occurred to me before to write a review because my wife and I eat here regularly and have never been disappointed in the meals or desserts. Or the price! If one is looking for something exotic, the Brick House may not fit the bill but for those of us who like a filling, tasty, traditional Kiwi meal, this place is absolutely tops. In the words of Ernest Hemingway, the Brick House is a “clean, well lighted place” with a very homey, comfortable atmosphere (and friendly staff as well).

Had an awesome garlic steak cooked perfectly (complements to the chef!), meal was the best. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful! The decor was very warm and inviting. Salad dressing reminded me of my grandmother’s, brought a smile to my face! Would definitely come again when we are in Wanganui!!

Hi Julie, thanks for your feedback, yes, our mayo recipe is from the boss’s grandmother so I am glad she was as good a cook as yours was!! Always happy to make our customers smile. From Mike & Julie & all the staff at The Brick House.

It seemed like an adventure in a rustic setting but we were confronted by Friday the 13th in culinary form. The food was appalling. Even “safe dishes” like the shrimp cocktail were destroyed; discoloured shrimps that tasted as though they had been soaked for days in raspberry flavoured Raro emerged from the kitchen in a small stainless steel bowl. I will not talk about the steaks as even thinking about the grill top murder committed at the Brickhouse causes me physical pain. On a positive note, the cooking staff do not work behind the bar. I am sure that this is why my draught Tui tasted fine. I was not brave enough to sample the wine list.

This has got to be the busiest place in town!! Went there before a show at the opera house and had a really good meal. The staff were happy and helpful and the steak was superb. My partner’s roast and veges was fresh and piping hot. Lovely home-made desserts also, hard to choose just 1. Great range of drinks and all very reasonably priced. Lovely fire going too. Definately will go back.

I go to the Brick House regularly and have never had a problem. The meals are reasonably priced and the staff are always friendly and helpful. My wife and I like to soak up the atmosphere as the old brick building seems to have an echo of days gone by. The hosts are welcome to criticism and suggestions and enjoy a good laugh. Keep up the good work

We go to the Brick House all the time, sometimes with groups, and we always enjoy the food and the atmosphere. The staff are friendly, the food is great and it is always busy. Food and drink prices are very reasonable.
