Was looking forward to going to this place for a while, but shouldn’t have bothered. The beer selection is good, but that is about all. The bar staff are rude, and the food apalling. We ordered two platters which were so laughable when they arrived that we took photos of them to show to our friends. The chicken kebabs we essentially just wooden sticks with a string of chicken wrapped around the stick – no wider than the small stick itself. The samosas and spring rolls were obviously just bought from a supermarket bulk box and deep fried. Will not be going back.

Went on a Thur night for couple of beers and a meal. Told chef was not working so food limited to pizza and wedges etc. So ordered a meat pizza and a margarita and wedges and fries. Pizza was worst we had ever tasted, including some very average supermarket versions. There appeared to be no base sauce at all and the cheese was clearly budget mild. The tomatoes were just a few thick cuts. The meat pizza was, it seems, the same pizza with a few chunks of processed ham and pepperoni. Us two hungry blokes gobbled down a slice or two before realising that it just was not worth it. Fries and wedges were fine but, really, would you expect even the worst restaurant to stuff up wedges and fries! When the waitress asked if we wanted a doggy bag I could not help myself in advising her that I would not feed even my dog that form of “food”. Harsh but true!

We turned up on Friday night because we had purchased vouchers. Even told the bar tender before we sat down. when we went up to order we were informed that the only items on the menu were pizza and chips because the chef had quit. Ok, that would have been fine except it was the worse pizza I have ever had. It was essential BBQ sauce with layers of cheese topping a doughy base. It was disgusting. Service was poor too. I have had lunch here which was much better however the portion are very small.

Avoid ordering any of the food except the wedges and chips. Good beer selection but seems more expensive than other craft beer bars.

Last evening we paid our second visit to the Bruhaus. It didn’t disappoint! Friendly and efficient service; a convivial atmosphere; good food, reasonably priced and well-presented – and best of all, a fabulous selection of beers, both bottled and on tap.

If you enjoy a really good beer and a pleasant eating experience in the heart of the city – do try it!

Since it opened I have been to the Brühaus several times. The beer selection is excellent, and on the whole I have found the service to be friendly and helpful.

The last time I was there with a friend we ordered food for the first time – a simple Margherita pizza. The base was thick, doughy, pale and limp. The cheese appeared to be processed cheddar liberally covering the few sparsely scattered slices of tomato, and no sign of fresh basil was evident. Neither of us were pleased with the pizza, and we could not bring ourselves to finish it. To compare this pizza to a typical supermarket frozen pizza would be flattering to the Brühaus attempt.

We politely gave feedback to the waitress who appeared to be surprised at the criticism. Having read other reviews I find it hard to believe this was a unique experience for her.

Go for the beer, avoid the food.

First time was for a Sunday lunch, we decided to give it a go. My partner and I were both very impressed with the $10 weekend brunch menu. Partner ordered the pasta which was big and he really enjoyed it. I got the fish and chips which were lovely. No time at all for our meal to arrive and very friendly service. It was not busy then, but the other two times I have been here the food was less than average, and the service was quite poor. The staff seemed more interested in other things than actually serving their customers. May not go back, which is such a shame as the first time was so good.

Absolutely loved the steak lunch mid May 2011, service was superb, everthing was perfect. We used $10 for $30 vouchers and checked reviews before we left and they were pretty much all down on the food so we were pretty worried.

But we need not have been, they have clearly made changes, even the sign on the footpath basically said “give us another chance” lol.

VERY GOOD LUNCH GOOD SERVICE GREAT DRINK RANGE!

Two chicks and I went knowing that this restaurant had bad reviews. We ordered the pumpkin soup, moroccan salad and tandori chicken salad. We couldn’t find anything wrong with the food at all. The only thing I would have suggested would be friendlier service please – the guys were really lovely. There were two girls who were a tiny bit snappy when we asked how far away our drinks were and they forgot the spoon for my friend’s soup. That’s all – so I would have given the place 9/10. Not bad at all if all you’re looking for is a good healthy quick meal! Yum!

A follow-up from my previous review: lunch today was a marked improvement. I walked in the door to find a busy lunchtime crowd and was greeted and seated immediately. After ordering my first coffee arrived after several minutes. The meal took 30 minutes to arrive but it was piping hot and filling, especially good today during a chilling southerly, although I was hoping the Island Bay sausages would be a little tastier (i.e. spicy). I noted that the tables that had ordered before I did all received their meals in sequence. Another two servings of coffee arrived promptly to finish it off nicely. Waiting staff were as quick as could be given the high demand.

Firstly, the Bruhaus is all about the beer, so this review is in that context. If you’re after fine dining this isn’t the place.

Bruhaus has an awesome range of beer compared to many of the pubs around. They do run out from time to time, but I’m hopeful this is because they keep low quantities so the beer is fresher from tap.

I first went here when they opened and truly, their pizza and snacks were the most average pizza and snacks in all of Wellington. Really poor. However – they have recently upgraded the menu so I went back to try.

I had the steak under mushrooms with wedges and salad. For $15, it’s a bargain. Tasty seasoned wedges, fresh salad & a small but well flavoured steak (200g) complemented with juicy mushrooms. Medium-rare was delivered as asked. It wasn’t enough to fill me but for $15… total bargain.

My brother had the chicken. Unfortunately this seemed to be the short straw of the lot – he received a tiny serving, made worse by the small new potatoes. He ended up sharing the rest of our plates. The chicken was tasty, even if it only lasted 5 bites.

His girlfriend ordered the fish. This was a winner next to the steak, with a large tasty fillet and plenty of chips to go with it.

The people at the table next to us ordered pizza and it appeared a dramatic (more cheesy, finally!) improvement over the previous pizzas I’d had.

All in all – great atmosphere, friendly (if slightly slow/busy waiting staff at the bar), good seats and top beer. Would totally go back.
Just make sure you go with expectations of pub food – then you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

I’ve visited several times to enjoy the bruhaus’ extensive beer menu. Yesterday was the first time I (+2 others) tried the dinner menu.

The salmon pizza and tiger prawns looked really appetizing with generous topping. Sirloin x2 was also cooked as ordered (medium rare).

However the pizza and steak meals both arrived cold. We were too busy too send back for even just a reheat.

The kitchen needs to improve service delivery. Hope you take heed of all the feedback.

Four trips so far, and I have to say…. na. That’s it, two strikes out of four and I won’t be going back. Which is a pity, as like others have said, I recognise the potential as a beer bar.

But if you ARE going to put on $10 lunches, the you should make sure that a CBD worker can be in and out within 30mins. Everything on the $10 menu is a very quick, in, out, Bob’s your Uncle dunk in a fryer meal.

So today, my partner and I. 50mins to get the meal, staff whose attention we couldn’t grab, and then my partners stew is delivered stone cold, on a bed of stone cold “mashed spud” type substance.

Yeah, that’s the last time for me. Previously, my rare steak was so well done I could have resoled a gumboot.

That’s my 2 cents. (which is about what the meal SHOULD have cost today)

Firstly, this place has potential. One of the best beer ranges in the country & great selection of true English beers on tap, a rarity in NZ. Wine selection great too, someone took the time to pick decent wine for a decent budget & I know wine. It’s pretty obvious that their main focus is the bar, which is worth the visit & will bring me back. They also provide very affordable food, which is absolutely terrible. Burnt toast that should have been served fresh anyway, ham that’s off, Pams salami, pre frozen salt & pepper squid (with no salt or pepper) dips out of a jar (no offence to Masterfoods, Pams or Watties but really? A restaurant?) Stop serving food or advertise that’s its cheap for a reason. Service you ask? In any other westernised country in the world you would probably just leave but as it’s in NZ, just sit back & tolerate it. Oh, & maybe a heater would be nice too.

I went here thinking, cool i have a Grabone voucher this should be nice. I walked in and waited at the bar for about 4 mins while the staff looked at me while cleaning cups. when i finally got served the lady behind the bar was a complete B***CH. She chucked my tab card at me, grunted away instead of talked to me and was extremely rude. One thing was the beer was nice. I also ordered wedges which came out and were very average. it came with mayo as dipping sauce. MAYO?? wtf?. I left thinking that i would not ever return.

Went for breakfast. Had GrabOne vouchers, which was lucky, as the $83.00 that the 5 breakfasts would have cost would have been a huge ripoff. Service was very unfriendly (was this due to having GrabOne vouchers??), serve staff had to come back to the table to get orders repeated, food was cold, bacon was not bacon, mushrooms were out of a can (yuck), potato hash is supermarket frozen hash browns, poached eggs were nice, but as with all the food, COLD! To top it all off the coffees and hot chocolate were terrible. Might be a good bar, who knows, but they shouldn’t profess to be a cafe/restaurant/bar. Or whatever it is they are trying to be. Not a pleasant experience.

Wow, a whole slurry of negative reviews for Bruhaus, better offer up my two cents. I’ve been here 2 or 3 times for beers, one of which for pizza and beer, and found it an agreeable beer bar. Down this end of town, i’d expect the clientelle to be, how shall we say, a bit high-powered and business jerky, but i really didn’t notice at all. Bruhaus offers up an enticing selection of craft beers both on tap and in bottle form, but beyond this they also serve as a proper eatery and offer cocktails and wines – moreso than the other beer bars around town. (Not that i’m really interested in anything but fine craft beers).

Each experience has been pleasant, i’ve sampled a good amount of beers, and had some ol’ favorites like Hofbrau. The staff seem very friendly – moreso than other bars, even some beer bar staff – which is of utmost importance, and they also seemed to be genuinely happy and have some degree of know how about the beers they were peddling. With regard to the food, our table had ordered a pizza before we got there, but there was a power outage which meant it couldn’t be cooked (hardly the bar’s fault), anyway after a couple rounds and a long wait, we were given a pizza on the house, due to the problem, and it wasn’t too bad. not great either. Good beer selection and nice surrounds, but it seems like the bar could up the level on the food a bit. nonetheless as good beer bar well worth checking out, should you feel the need to wet your whistle and demand something better than cheap swill.

The theory was you can’t go too far wrong with a $10 lunch. Wrong.

Chicken sandwich = cold dry stonelike chicken, matched with concrete bread.

Beef sandwich = dry tough minute steak, with the same concrete slab bread.

Easily the worst lunch ever in Wellington. And the beer was warm.

Worst breakfast I have ever had.

Tried to order lunch at 11.20am but was told lunch menu did not start until 12pm, so breakfast only, but it depends on the chef, so the waitress checked, but was declined. 45 minutes later my breakfast menu order arrived. The “toast” was two slices of untoasted ciabatta, the “european sausages” was one sausage, but a nice one. The “potato hash” was two generic triangle hash browns, accompanied by a small portion of old looking dry mesculin. But worst of all is the bacon was not bacon at all, it was just lukewarm slices of shaved ham that left a gross after taste. My partner was equally disappointed with her meal which featured the worlds smallest serving of bland baked beans. We will never go there again and suspect we were overcharged.

Vegetarians should also be aware that there are no vegetarian dishes on the lunch menu. At 12pm a family tried to order from the lunch menu but was told sorry, the chef is now only making dishes from the “breakfast and dinner menu”. Avoid.

A friend and I were looking forward to a nice Friday lunch at Bruhaus. After a 40min wait from the time it was ordered my curry of the day (vegetable) was very poor value for money, it was mainly rice (nicely cooked) with a spoon of very mild tasteless vegetable spread over the top. My friend had the ‘steak sandwich’ which was just a small piece of gristly meat between two large pieces of bread accompanied by a very large portion of tasteless greasy fries. All in all very disappointing.

My comment is just on the evening ‘grazing’ menu. I was part of a large group dining in the evening at the Bruhaus and was disappointed that the only food on the menu is pure carbs or fried food. The fries were soft like chips from a fish & chip shop and the pizzas tasted like they were straight out of a box from the freezer. I was very disappointed!
