Made an effort to dine here during the weekend as I have passed by and it looked really inviting. The breakfast food we ordered and received was great Ihad the energiser and partner had the omlette both yummy. The home baking to die for and the blue berry caramel slice legendary – even took slices home. I would have to agree the staff are a little rude and a bit clueless. The counter area becomes quickly congested if thea more than three people ordering at a time. Apart from this will definetly be back for baking oh and yo-yo’s delicious.

Am now a regular here for coffee and sometimes breakfast. Great fresh baking. Can get pretty busy on the weekends but staff I have always found to be friendly. Radio music on a badly tuned sound system the only negative. Some good tunes would make the place even better.

Cool funky cafe with fantastic home baking and lovely coffee……unfortunately staff and ?owner too cool for school, inattentive, and premises not particularly clean (food stuck between chairs and food on floor). If they pay attention to customer service they will certainly be onto a winner and for goodness sake, stop paying attention to your friends and pay attention to your customers.

I also agree with Craig M. I can’t understand the negative feed backs. My wife and I live here and we often get a coffee and counter food at 88, along with friends. We have been to many Cafes in the Mount and in Tauranga and 88 is THE best. Great food, great coffee and we haven’t had any issues with the staff. On the odd occasion they may not have been overly friendly (Owner note this), but not to an extent that would even deserve a comment. Well worth a visit!

Just ate here at cafe 88, it was a hard decision because of all the negative feed back, which is incorrect, the staff were polite and answered all questions, the food was excellent, and I’m a picky eater, the coffee was great also, we were drawn in by the home baking but am too full to even touch it, we will definately be back to this place to eat, well done 88

myself and my two daughters dined there today and wont be back.my breakfast had no flavour and my daughter couldnt eat her fritters and the salad on her plate was limp.the fritters were poorly heated with a rock hard egg on top.the stuck up blonde waitress didnt want to know and went into attact mode .what good can i say,the fries were okay and coffee wasnt bad but the staff need to realise that a smile can work wonders.i spent 69 dollars there for 3 dishes of precooked and microwaved food,we wont be back again.

Visited this cafe on the weekend – should’ve chosen the delicious looking home baking on offer at the counter because my breakfast choice was average. Ordered Eggs benny with salmon and asked for the hollandaise on the side (sometimes I find it really rich when combined with the salmon also), the girl who took my order definitely noted my “on the side” request… but when it was delivered to the table – you guessed it; my hollandaise sauce was all over everything! The menu said the eggs were served on a bagel, I got half a bagel and a potato cake, which I didn’t want and it was tasteless. The spinach was clearly straight out of the bag…. I don’t have an issue with using supermarket spinach, but maybe wilting it with a little seasoning would’ve made a difference – and would’ve looked nicer.
The coffee was great though!

Cafe 88 is just down the road from us and as far as cafe’s at the Mount goes, it has so much potential and the food is really good. I’ve had one bad experience with the muesli there, it was drowned in sugar to the point that I could see the sugar crystals and it was inedible, other than that, the food is great. I do agree it is over priced, I got a shock when I bought a small take away pie for around $10! Agree on the staff front, no smiles and this is the main reason that we don’t frequent the place more often, if the owners smiled more, the staff might follow..

Often grab my lunch from here – beautiful coffees and home baking. Love the feel of the cafe, is a perfect spot for all ages. Have always found the customer service to be brilliant even when busy. Cafe 88 certainly has my vote.

I have visited this cafe` regularly during the short time off I do enjoy, I am from Northland and find this little slice of Heaven impeccable.

I am rather surprised by what people have said about the service…It does get very busy from time to time but I find the staff do their best to compensate, and lets be honest, it can not be easy pleasing a lot of the ‘beautiful people’ from that region, I don’t believe the reviews are justifiable at all.

The food is simply delicious, and the coffees are the best in NZ imo. I only wish there was such a fab place up in my neck of the woods. Keep up the great work Cafe` 88!!

Eighty Eight’s coffee is consistently good and the home-style baking is always tempting and delicious. Great to have a rad little Café like this in the Mount.

When I first starting visiting the cafe it was the coffee that attracted me, and kept me coming back, despite the small size and unfriendly staff. After going there with more regularity the staff have become much nicer, almost friendly, and the food has always been amazing.
I don’t like the fact they don’t have pricing on the cabinet.
All in all I have been really enjoying this cafe and I don’t think it’s quite deserving of the bad reviews to date, although obviously they have some work to do re: customer relations. Keep the kitchen staff, sack everyone on the counter imo.

i really really want to love this cafe but the service is TERRIBLE! no smiles, no friendly faces, no acknowledgement as you wait at the counter. Wrong milk in the coffee, no apology, grumpy delivery. Funky decor and the food looks yummy but staff are way too cool for school and this makes for an unpleasant cafe experience.

Love this funky little place, always busy, coffee is fantastic, home baking heaven, I would say it is the place to be seen. Only one problem, hard to get a seat.

Had expected a lot of this place after various good reviews, and the food, though a bit overpriced, is fine, as is the coffee. But the staff need to get over themselves. Sorry guys, I won’t be back.

Poor service, cold coffee and very over priced. Hope 88 picks their game up soon. Alot of competition out there. Has a lot of potential.

The food is creative and lovely, but sadly overpriced. The counter staff is somewhat atrocious at 8am, making it difficult to enjoy your experience at Cafe 88! It has potential, but definitely in dire need of some enthusiasm and customer service skills : ) Will try again after the summer.
