For some reason I’d never had dinner here before; maybe it’s the predominance of middle-aged women that seem to frequent it. Anywho, K and I shared some cibata and squid which was very good. Unfortunately the wine menu is decidedly average and we were unable to drink our bottle of voigner. I had a most frigid glass of pinot gris. We both ordered beef wellingtons. We’d barely finished when our plates were clattered away because our main were ready. Clumsy. Mine was pretty much spot on, medium to medium-rare; K’s slightly over done. Really good herby flavour in the meat. An espresso to finish was good. I’d eat here again. Although it wasn’t really a relaxing meal, we were in and out in an hour…

Cafe Rue is my go to cafe for chocolate brownie and friands… actually make that any of their baking! I went their for dinner a couple of months ago, and another time a year before that, the food was great both times, I ordered the steak, it was cooked perfectly and the wait staff were lovely, I definitely recommend Cafe Rue, try one of their amazing brownies, or three.

This place is nice but I do see room for improvement.

The waitstaff are very inattentive. I feel badly for the well meaning owner. She shouldn’t have to work with that. They don’t seem to worry about drinks.

The food portions vary too much in size. My friend ordered a dinner quesadilla from the mains menu. It was a feeble snack. She had to eat and be hungry as I overate.

The heating is abysmal. Even sitting near the fire it wasn’t efficient enough.

Cafe Rue could have a winning formula, they just need to pull their socks up on a few things.

Café Rue – friendly people, great food and very handy! Menu is always good and you can’t eat everything you think you might like so you have to go back to try that other dish. Then, if you take too long in going back you may find the menu has changed so watch out for that one! Had a lovely night there for my 70th birthday, have been to other special birthday s hosted by the team there and hopefully will get to my 80th birthday do at Café Rue – you can’t go wrong!

I had a lovely Duck Crepe for lunch and I was surprised at how cheap it was. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food came promptly despite the place being reasonably full. I loved the open fireplace and I cannot recommend Cafe Rue more highly.

Ate there last week.

On the day that we dined the service was definitely NOT up to scratch. The waitress never took drink orders, so I tried to politely (no yelling or finger snapping or anything like that) to get her attention once and she ignored me. Finally got her attention on the second time round. She seemed pissed off that I was bothering her.

The food took forever to arrive (45mins to be exact). The meals were quite badly staggered, with some of us most of the way through our meals before the last plate arrived. Food was underwhelming… the full breakfast came with supermarket white bread, like tip tops or something. Eggs were undercooked in that meal as well. Everything else was very gluggy.

Staff never returned to check if food was OK, or offer more drinks.

Have to say, considering that there are much better options close by, you can avoid this place without losing anything.

After visiting this cafe for coffee and cake and being impressed, we were keen to return and try their breakfast menu!!! however what a let down…… We ordered the flapjacks with bacon and banana…. they looked lovely but upon tucking in one discovered that they had carefully hid the fact there was only one tiny solitary piece of dried bacon between two thick, cloggy uneven pancakes that were drowned in maple syrup…. the size of all three dishes varied greatly with one diner getting huge thick pancakes and the other getting thin burnt small flapjacks…. so so so disappointed…. :( the staff were unfriendly, never asking how the meal was and it felt as though we were not welcome…. will not be returning.

Arguably the best brunch cafe in Dunedin. Nice to find a restaurant with different handwriting. Sunny staff , good prices ,and good size servings. Coffee is great and a pot of English breakfast tea reminds you what tea should taste like! Eggs Benedict here could be the best in town because I’m very fussy about my eggs.a new bar has now been added to the cafe.

the food and service were excellent! I loved my salmon with potato cake, my partner chose delicious lamb rump and it was so good we wanted to lick our plates :-)
it was a bit quiet probably because we went during the week but that only ment we didn’t have to wait long for our food.
We loved it and will come back!

Great coffee, and fluffies for the kids. Lovely friendly staff and warm inviting atmosphere. Particularly great for breakfast/brunch, the morning sun streams in the windows and they have arguably the most delicious scrambled eggs in town :)

Gary and Brenda always have a great menu which is varied and innovative and it is always a challenge to make a decision! Thoroughly recommend it as a place for groups or just a couple.

Arrived under the pretense that Cafe Rue had a well crafted menu, but were left extremely disappointed and put a damper on the whole night.

My order of Fillet Steak with quail was nice (although smallish and i had to eat a loaf of bread when i got home), but my girlfriend ordered the Blue cod special. Which unfortunately (not stated on the chalked up special’s menu) arrived wrapped in bacon…

Honestly Chicken wrapped in bacon, thumbs up. Beef in bacon, thumbs up. But fish!? Did i mention shes a vegetarian… Not to mention it wasn’t grilled but looked like it just came out of the microwave. The fish was also tough, indicating it was indeed not ‘fresh’.

Overpriced, rubbish food and the noisy pop-electro sounded like the proprietor stole one of KC’s mixed tapes in their liquidation sale.
