After visiting this cafe for coffee and cake and being impressed, we were keen to return and try their breakfast menu!!! however what a let down…… We ordered the flapjacks with bacon and banana…. they looked lovely but upon tucking in one discovered that they had carefully hid the fact there was only one tiny solitary piece of dried bacon between two thick, cloggy uneven pancakes that were drowned in maple syrup…. the size of all three dishes varied greatly with one diner getting huge thick pancakes and the other getting thin burnt small flapjacks…. so so so disappointed….
the staff were unfriendly, never asking how the meal was and it felt as though we were not welcome…. will not be returning.
Arguably the best brunch cafe in Dunedin. Nice to find a restaurant with different handwriting. Sunny staff , good prices ,and good size servings. Coffee is great and a pot of English breakfast tea reminds you what tea should taste like! Eggs Benedict here could be the best in town because I’m very fussy about my eggs.a new bar has now been added to the cafe.

the food and service were excellent! I loved my salmon with potato cake, my partner chose delicious lamb rump and it was so good we wanted to lick our plates
it was a bit quiet probably because we went during the week but that only ment we didn’t have to wait long for our food.
We loved it and will come back!

During the morning the bacon and egg scones are to die for and very addictive!!
I eat at Cafe Rue at least once a week for lunch and cannot fault the menu, meals or service.

I give cafe Rue 5 stars for the most phenomenal risotto I have ever had..(scallop, bacon etc) I nearly cried when it was over. Tasted like it was sent from the heavens. AMAZING!!!!!
Great coffee, and fluffies for the kids. Lovely friendly staff and warm inviting atmosphere. Particularly great for breakfast/brunch, the morning sun streams in the windows and they have arguably the most delicious scrambled eggs in town
Gary and Brenda always have a great menu which is varied and innovative and it is always a challenge to make a decision! Thoroughly recommend it as a place for groups or just a couple.
Arrived under the pretense that Cafe Rue had a well crafted menu, but were left extremely disappointed and put a damper on the whole night.
My order of Fillet Steak with quail was nice (although smallish and i had to eat a loaf of bread when i got home), but my girlfriend ordered the Blue cod special. Which unfortunately (not stated on the chalked up special’s menu) arrived wrapped in bacon…
Honestly Chicken wrapped in bacon, thumbs up. Beef in bacon, thumbs up. But fish!? Did i mention shes a vegetarian… Not to mention it wasn’t grilled but looked like it just came out of the microwave. The fish was also tough, indicating it was indeed not ‘fresh’.
Overpriced, rubbish food and the noisy pop-electro sounded like the proprietor stole one of KC’s mixed tapes in their liquidation sale.
