Food is great, nice and fresh.
And if you ever feel guilty, remember: French women don’t get fat!

I was dining at the Versailles with family 4days ago and discovered that on our previous visit they were having a wee prob with new staff.
I returned this time because I know that generally in business there are occasional hiccups, so giving a person or a business a 2nd chance is more positive in the long run for everyone, as was proven this time.
Also,we had spoken with friends about their experience at Cafe Versailles and they also had great evenings.
Maureen, our seriously professional manager, had sorted the small staff hiccups and then some.
Service, quality of food and wine was really great. The staff were sharp, friendly and helpful. Prices, well we were surprised how reasonable.
Thank you, again.

The restaurant was cold even with the 3 tiny wall heaters going. Most customers seem to leave their coat on to keep warm. The tables set out are rather close to each other.
For entree, my husband ordered a Terrine and a glass of red wine to match and I had Escargots. Both entrees were served but the wine was forgotten and not served. When we finished eating the entrees, we mentioned about the non-arrival wine and the waitress didn’t even apologise or offered to get it immediately.
For main course, I had the Fillet Steak and my husband had Lamb Casserole. The fillet steak was tasty enough but the presentation was so basic and lazy. The Lamb Casserole was somewhat cooked in a sauce that was just watery and boring. There were no character in it. This time the glasses of wine ordered were served.
For dessert I ordered the Chocolate Mousse, but it was nice but not outstanding. My husband was too disappointed with the service and his meal that he didn’t feel like carrying on to dessert. We were too disappointed with the service to stay on and decided to go somewhere else for a glass of port/liqueur/coffee.
We present our Card at the till to pay for our bill. The lady went thru the food/drinks items verbally with me to confirm with me as she was punching it. I noticed she punched the French Sparking Mineral Water as $44, so when she presented the bill of $180, I asked her how much was the Mineral Water, she realised she punched in $44 instead of $9.50, so she adjusted the bill manually. When I got home, I realised she still made a calculation error. The adjusted bill was $145.50, the Entertainment Card Discount was $25, so the bill should have been $120.50 but we were charged $125.50. I didn’t notice the error until I got home and looked at the receipt.
It was a very disappointing experience as I was looking forward to eating a good quality French Food for our wedding anniversary. I would never go back or recommend anybody Cafe Versailles. The customer services was poor and the food is below average. The food presentation lacks imagination and creativity. Even the cutlery on the table is cheap quality.

Those expecting staff to be “seen and not heard” will be dissappointed – this place is into Friendly. The owner might seem a lunatic to some, but most see him as an amiable and jolly host. Which is what he is.
The only downside is that in summer it gets very hot; get a table by the windows.

We’d been there once before and although the chef was priding himself on serving fresh food, he served me with frozen stuff he had heated up in the oven, not quite thoroughly enough, obviously.
I’m not going back. Two very average experiences is enough for me.
The food is divine – especially the soup – which is what I always get. Opt for the puff pastry lid too – it never disappoints.
The staff are wonderful and always make dinner a pleasurable experience.
The flaming crepes for dessert are always a hit!
Absolutely no complaints – We are surely coming here again. Bravo!
Took my wife there for her birthday and they appear to have lost the plot.
There has obviously been some staff issues or changes in the management structure.
We were a table of 11 and service was poor, meals very mediocre, they could have sold us coffees and deserts but but we were by that stage just wanting to get going, maybe the night before new years eve is not a night to go out.

We were made welcome straight away with a generous hug and shake of the hands from our host.
The meals came out swiftly, served with a smile and confident purpose. I had the escargo of course. I’m quite partial to titiko (mud snails) so the snails of generous proportions and plenty of herb butter were just a treat. My wife enjoyed the scallops in a white wine sauce and a side of cointreau. I had a couple as well. Very good. For our main I had the beef fillet (rare) and my wife had the coq au vin. My steak was superb. It’s amazing how many steaks are not cooked properly these days. For a start is was rare, and was rare (as I had requested) and when I finished it was still rare. For the dessert, I had profiteroles, an old favourite of mine. At first they didn’t taste that great, rather bland. It seems there was no custard. The waitress seeing this promptly whisked them away and immediately brought out a fresh batch with vanilla custard and plenty of that rich dark chocolate sauce. I was in heaven.
We thought we would keep with the theme and ordered a bottle of French Pinot Noir. My goodness, it was good. I’ll be a little more conservative with regard to our Central Otago best.
All in all, a great night out, a full stomach, a smile on our faces. Highlights were the great service, meeting our expectations with regard to the classics everytime. It would have been an easy 5 out of 5 if the custard had been in the filo first time round.
