7 Reviews for Cafe Zilli
I was a bit apprehensive about dining at Cafe Zilli after reading so many negative reviews about service in recent times. We needn’t have worried; the service was fine – nothing flash but no need for concern last Friday night. The restaurant was full so we were pleased to be able to get the last table without booking. We began with calamari and tabbouleh. The calamari was ok but tasted store bought. Our main courses were huge! I had the mixed shish, a combination of nuri baba (lamb) and chicken shish. I especially enjoyed the lamb which was lovely and tender. My partner had chicken Turkeman with garlic, yoghurt, oregano and basil – very tasty and another generous serving. Yes, the decor is a bit tired, partially hidden by Turkish decorations and dim lighting (making the menu hard to read) but the main courses are great value and worth coming back for.

Great food – we were a little anxious on our first visit here, not knowing what to expect.
It is a nondescript cafe from the outside – looks a little tired and not completely inviting. Once you are inside though, you can head to the back of the restaurant and recline on corner seating with cushions and candles. Very traditional – fabric on the walls and roof – but you soon forget that you are in the Hutt and enjoy the ambiance. The owner takes great pride in providing you with excellent food. May not be the quickest waiting staff – but for a reasonably priced meal, and lovely experience, it won’t matter.

went a short while ago – and have only just got a chance to write a review now. Service was totally shocking, as was the food and the decor. Our waitress was Catherine or Cathy from memory – appalling to say the least. Wont be going back – EVER.

Eaten here 3 times. BYO, service good, typically meals are fresh and good though some can taste very similar.
Fresh coat of paint and an update would not go amiss.

Nice food, not wow factor but very reasonably priced. $80 for two including entree dessert and drinks. Didnt have everything we wanted on the menu and the waitress was new and didnt know anything about the food but she was friendly. Baklava was very nice.

Dined here last night.4 of us share a mixed platter then had mains. Lamb kebabs were tough and chewy. Prices were reasonable. Decor is tired and needs a good clean and spruce up. Cleanliness leaves a lot to be desired. Walked past the kitchen a few times and the work service areas need some attention. Staff were friendly, but had to ask for wine glasses once seated. Waitress saw that we had bottles of wine but wasn’t forthcoming with glasses. Wasn’t overly busy last night and one waitress was leaned over the counter texting on her cell phone.
We just love Zilli, the BEST meze platters and the hubby LOVES the moussaka – it comes with a special rice… (they can run out of the rice so make sure you get your order in in time!)
Great little place in Petone, friendly staff.
Good value, BYO (makes it affordable) and they even have a great choc cake!
YOU’LL love it… we have been back numerous times.
