Fantastic! absolutely stunning spot with friendly staff and absolutely gorgeous food. Today’s lunch was the Ploughman’s Platter and the Seafood Chowder. Both just great, sitting by the roaring fire – it does not get much better than this!

You will not be disappointed

Discovered this beautiful pub a couple of years ago, we were impressed at the time but it just gets better and better!
The seafood is definitely the best anywhere (and we love our seafood), fresh and beautifully flavoured and presented- lots of delicious shellfish.
The staff are friendly and relaxed- maybe a bit casual but very helpful- it’s not trying to be fine dining but a fusion of pub cuisine and seafood restaurant.
Our favourite place to go in Dunedin.
Beer is great too! Emersons.
Highly recommended.

After a previously enjoyable dinner at Carey’s Bay, we decided to hold a family lunch here. While the service and atmosphere was very good, overall we were mildly disappointed with the food. A couple of us had the squid rings and found them tough and chewy. The beer battered fish was greasy and of a lower standard than the Fish & Chip shop in Port Chalmers. The seafood chowder was very salty. The pumpkin cannelloni hadn’t been nuked long enough and wasn’t evenly heated.

We will think twice before heading back here for a meal.

Really disappointed to hear of your experience Peter. We do pride ourselves on the consistency and quality of our food. This was obviously a day when things went a bit wrong for your table! We will speak to our staff to review where things went wrong and make…    More »

Wonderful fresh seafood. The seafood platter is delicious! The wait staff were very attentive and helpful, and our mains arrived within 15 minutes of ordering. The renovated historic building has an atmosphere and feel you won’t find anywhere else, and a great view out over the water. We were very impressed with our dinner here.

I had lunch at Carey’s Bay Hotel and selected the Seafood Chowder. Very disappointing,it was mainly white sauce with ONE scallop and a few small shreds of seafood. Definitely the worst seafood chowder I have had served. The restaurant was very busy, but this is no excuse. If you’re short of seafood,I would of changed my choice.

Our apologies for your experience, it is disappointing as the chowder is usually very good. Not sure what went wrong but we will definitely make sure it doesn’t happen again. Once again our apologies.

Do not like to write to much. This is number one Dunedin’s place if you into seafood! Nice and cosy, friendly staff, good menu, very tasty right cooked seafood.

If you don’t like seafood, there is steak available.

5 stars, well done

As visitors from Christchurch with family in Dunedin we love coming to the Careys Bay Hotel to get away from it all. The food, old world atmosphere and amazing views are cetainly worth the 15 minute drive from town.
On our most recent visit we were really impressed to see their gorgeous new menu, full with really interesting seafood options. I went for the oyster, scallop and brie soup special while my husband adventurously tried the bluecod head and wing seafood soup of the day. Both were outstanding while being completely different to each other. The waitress joked about the oyster soup being a “heart-attack in a bowl” – at least I would have died happy!
We always have a wonderful time at the hotel and know to request our favourite window seat now, the staff are friendly and relaxed and still deliver top service that makes you feel like a valued customer. We will be back!

Gorgeous location and nice ambiance but average food and poor service. A big disappointment for a 21st birthday lunch.

There is always something special about dining at Carey’s Bay. This is my fourth meal and I have sat in four different locations. This time it was at a table beside a huge window overlooking the bay. That in itself was worth the cost. I love the informality.

My wife and I had the sole fillet fish and it was superb. I also enjoyed being able to drink Emerson’s Beer on tap.

The staff were friendly and helpful.

Lovely view over Carey’s Bay. Nice and warm with open fire.
The menu was amazing.
We had the main meal of scallops with a nice red . Perfect.
Would make a special trip from Timaru again to go the this amazing restaurant.
Cannot rate this highly enough.
