Had a lovely meal tonight. Definitely recommend the salt and pepper squid and the chef’s special Chili Jam Duck. Fab service and beautiful surroundings. We sat outside on the back lawn and the gardens have the most interesting plants. I particularly loved the North American swan plant which has lovely orange and yellow flowers.( You should bag some of those seeds and sell them at the front desk) The Monarch butterflies were so lovely to watch in the garden. A very pleasant interlude after dropping a family member at the Airport – we will definitely be back

Chang Siam is consistently great food and great value for money. We have been there on at least 6 occasions- the menu is variied and interesting and everything is totally delicious. Super service, nice surroundings and happy smiling faces. The take away service is also terrific.

Its great that Kerikeri finally has a Thai restaurant, and a restaurant that consistently delivers amazingly delicious food with impeccable service

We’ve dined in, and had takeaways from Chang Siam several times, and its always lived up to expectation!

They have without a doubt the MOST incredible Salt & Pepper Squid you’ll ever eat!!

I have only recently come home from overseas and delighted that we now have this amazing Thai restaurant in Kerikeri, I have been 3 times in three weeks.

I have visited Thailand a few times and love Thai food, until now Pad Thai was my favourite and I would typically stick to it. After having been to Chang Siam I now have 3 new favourite dishes (can’t decide which is best!) namely the Chilli Jam Duck, Beef Massaman and Macadamia Chicken.

Topping it all off is the friendly service and the prices are all very fair! Already looking forward to going back again!!

The service was good and the restaurant was clean and arranged well. We had the fish cakes, dim sims, green curry and minced chicken salad. There wasn’t enough fresh vegetables or salad greens to balance out the meat servings. It was an average meal, regardless of whether I visit Thailand regularly – is not the point. If someone in Thailand served this up to us we would pay about $17 for the whole meal, but here in Kerikeri we paid $68. The prices should be a little lower and the food could slightly pass for fast food if not careful.

I promised to revisit Chang Siam and update my review accordingly. I have since visited twice more with varying experiences.

A few months ago my partner and I had a pretty terrible meal. I ordered foolishly, sidestepping my favourite super-spicy thai dishes and opted for the mild Gang Massaman. Sadly the potatoes where practically raw they were so undercooked. The meat was not the melt-in-mouth one would expect but quite tough. Not only that, the hunks were huge ! No knife provided or delivered when requested. I made do with chewing off the side of my fork. Verdict: 1.5 stars.

So, on a brighter note, we visited with a larger group a couple of weeks back. This time the Yum Nua and the Larb Gai were pretty good, much more punch than previous (don’t hold back on the lime juice & chilli guys!). The chilli sauce served with the whole fish was exceptional. A couple of the curries were fairly pedestrian but our friends who ordered them seemed happy enough. Pity our request for more rice was either ignored or forgotten.

So all in all I’m happy to upgrade from 2 to 3 stars.

Original 2012 Review Below

I’m struggling with how to review Chang Siam. I’m absolutely delighted that Kerikeri has a Thai restaurant but sadly just a little underwhelmed by the food.

The staff are lovely, the dining area clean and appropriately decorated. The menu, at a glance, looks exactly as it should with all the classic Thai offerings.

But …. and this is only after one meal, the food just didn’t have the punch and zing I’d expect. I have travelled to Thailand on numerous occasions and adore the food – I cook it regularly at home. Chang Siam just didn’t quite measure up.

To be fair I WILL return and will re-write this review if I am proven wrong after a second sitting. Good Luck

The food was fresh, the staff were ubber friendly and imported singha you couldn’t get much better, drove 30Min’s from Whangaroa to try it out! This was some of the best restaurant Thai food i have had, the rest was on the street stalls in Thailand. Well done!!!
