The food was excellent. I had the smoked salmon entree, my partner the chicken liver pate, followed by the lamb and the cannelloni – all of which had the distinct individual flavours of ingredients that marks a good chef (rather than the bland mish mash of flavours that passes for good cuisine in many restaurants). The wine list pretty ordinary, despite including some top vineyards (but not their best wines) however, Leigh took in good grace my suggestion that they buy smarter when it comes to wine, so hopefully we will see a better list next time.

I have never been to this restaurant until last night and wish I had gone earlier. I am difficult to please when it comes to eating out, but I have no complaints about this place. Excellent ambiance, service and food. I think one measure of a good restaurant is one that makes sure you have enough water for the table at all times and that provides attentive but not intrusive service. The food was superb – not over fussy or too rich, just good and nicely presented. I also think its good value for money for such a quality place – $70 for three courses.
I would highly recommend this restaurant which I think suffers due to its slightly out of the way location.
As David Burton said, its a hidden gem.

We ate here in November 2010 and I have been meaning to write a few words ever since. First, at these prices and for a supposedly high-end restaurant, why are they setting the tables with paper napkins? And tiny ones at that? Second, when one serves steak, it helps to have steak knives available. We ordered our steak rare, and while it was certainly cuttable with a regular dinner knife, it would have helped with the enjoyment of the steak to have a nice sharp knife to cut it with.
Those things said, overall we had a fine dinner. Most of the meal was quite tasty, although the “gnocchi” had nothing in common with actual gnocchi and were more like a toughish potato pancake on top of the steak. Service was OK, nothing to write home about. We’ve lived here 6 months now (from San Francisco orignally and have done our share of fine dining all over the U.S.), and our overall feeling after trying Charlie Bill was that we’ll continue our search to find more impressive meals in Wellington.

I’ve been to Charlie Bill three times, and it’s been consistently excellent each time. I think it’s important that a restaurant is consistent; I’ve been to too many places which deliver on one day but are a disappointment when you go back the next time.

The pate entrĂ©e is delicious. So good, I’ve ended up ordering it every time I’ve been there. The lamb pie main is also great – full of quality meat, subtle, and flavourful.

Staff are good – there when you need something, fading into the background when you don’t. I’ve been there with a group from work, and even though we were the last to leave by some distance, we didn’t feel pressured into finishing. I’ve also been there with just my partner – and it’s a good place for a quiet, romantic dinner.

We ate at Charlie Bill after walking out of the Tinakori Bistro due to bad service.

The restaurant was busy with a large group, they made a speedy arrangement to get us seated.

The team were very warm and welcoming, and the service attentive but unintrusive.

Our meals were outstanding – we had a lovely evening. I had delicious. melt-in-the-mouth hot smoked salmon followed by the tenderest fillet steak, cooked to perfection.

A great rescue. We will happily return and recommend. A lovely intimate restaurant for a special meal.

Was taken here for my birthday and had a fantastic meal. The seafood chowder was divine, incredibly rich and creamy. The lamb was pretty good too, but the pea puree underneath was a bit much for me personally. Looking forward to going back.
