6 Reviews for Chimney Indian Restaurant

Really not sure about the other reviews for this place. I love curries and only ever normally eat in Indian restaurants. When I’m in Rotorua and see an Indian with 100% 5* reviews the. It’s a must, but this place is the worst place I’ve been to in years..

* there’s 3 of us, we’re seated, and it takes around 5 mins until they bring us our menus
* we order drinks (1 bottled beer, 1 tap beer, and a glass of tap water) and it took around ten mins for the drinks to come (note there’s only two other tables seated – a four and a two)
* we order poppadoms and ‘selection of mixed pickles’ and are brought poppadoms and mango chutney only. Again, after a longer than expected wait. I advised the waiter we ordered mixed pickles so he took the chutney away and bought back a ramakin of lime pickle only, after about 5 mins. We then asked the waiter again for our SELECTION OF MIXED PICKLES and he said that’s what the lime pickle was, and mango chutney was extra. Just as we got the mango chutney redelivered our mains came out, maybe the fastest thing of the night so far, shame there was no time to properly enjoy the poppadoms.
* my main – beef vindaloo (although some will argue not a proper curry, I always have it, so can see it as a good base of comparison between restaurants.) I asked for very hot, but it was mild as best, the lime pickle (from a jar) was a good few times spicier than the vindaloo, supposedly the hottest thing on the menu.
* the naan, when we asked when ordering were told it was “very very big” and enough for 3, the hand gesture suggested it was a very big naan too, but it was the size of a side plate, cut into 4 pieces
* the onion bhaaji- I ordered it on recommendation of a previous review, but it was slimy shredded messy pieces of battered onion- disgusting
* we then went to pay the bill (not delivered to the table- told to pay at the till) and that took about ten minutes. The lady had to enter our order three times as the till roll ran out which caused a whole side story of drama

So overall just a snippet of what this experience was like. You always expect one or two things that might go wrong or might not be to your liking, but there is nothing positive I can say about this restaurant.

Reading over the other reviews they just seem strangely suspicious, a bit too perfect for somewhere I consider to be the worst curry house I’ve visited for a good few years. And they all seem to promite somethibg about the place too- eg takeaway, family restaurant, reasonably priced, good food etc. Who knows who wrote those….

Best Indian food in Rotorua, a real treat to find such a reasonably priced menu serving such fine cuisine. The setting is humble but its very clean & tidy and the staff are great but its the food that will blow you away and the prices that will keep you visiting often.

Well done guys!

Best Indian food that we have found so far in NZ.
We started with the Onion Bhaji and had to have a second helping as it was just so good. The Chicken Vindaloo was very tasty. Asked for it spicy and that is what we got.
Next time we will order double and get a takeaway.

Our football team, 14 chaps over 35, went to this wonderful restaurent on Sat. A number of curry connoiseurs in the team, we did not expect much but a ‘good value feed’.

What we received was terrific service, high quality food (great starters, curries and breads made with great ingredients) and some good TASTY South Indian options that you do not normally see in New Zealand Indian establishments.

The quality of the evening was captured when the owner, host and chef joined us for a drink and offered us a terrific deal for an Indian breakfast the next day.

The restaurent itself has good ambience, very clean and you can see the kithen action (always a plus).

A number of the pommes in the team remarked Chiney was one of the best Indians restuarents in NZ.
