At The Chip Shop, our aim is to re-create that quintessentially Kiwi experience of the good old days: dropping in at the friendly neighbourhood chippy where you were greeted by name and you went home with a packet of moist, lightly battered fresh fish and chips made from scratch: that particular spirit of hospitality that money can’t buy, that laid-back era before “fast” food became a four letter word on so many levels. And that’s how we’ve built our extremely loyal customer base which stretches from Glendowie to Howick, from Manukau to North Shore. Our biggest concession to modern times has been in our choice of frying medium: we fry in healthy Rice Bran oil. Three years ago, in response to growing demand, 100% gluten, wheat and dairy-free batter was introduced as an option for whose suffering from gluten intolerance. After winning “Top 15 in Auckland” in ’06, ’07 and ’08, in 2009, we were named “Auckland’s Best Chip Shop” in “New Zealand’s Best Chip Shop” competition. Otherwise, it’s business as usual: peeling, chipping and frying over a ton of potatoes and kumaras every week, whipping up batter by the bucketful, buying and prepping fresh fish daily and generally giving folks a good feed at honest prices. Plus of course, plenty of name calling.

The food looked great. The fish, fritters and hotdogs looked great.
There was one problem though.
It was like the oil had totally absorbed into the batter.
But you wouldn’t know it until you tasted it.
It was so greasy and oily on the inside.
2006 – 2009 was a long time ago.

Worth traveling a few km’s to get to.
What a difference good staff and good food makes,
always a shame to come to the last chip, where as most places im over them half way,
cooked perfect, just right amount of salt,
the batter of the fish is enjoyable also, has a puffy crispiness to it,
And kumara chips that arent stuck together like most
definately worth the visit, friendly staff, took 2 other people who went back 2 times in the same week, they loved it so much

I am not familiar with Auckland so I rang the chip shop for directions a few times on the way.
Finally we arrived there and I asked for a simple bag of chips. As extras on the menu it stated “cheese $1.50”, so I asked for some cheese on top of the chips. The owner shook his head in dismiss. He did not even speak, just shook his head vigorously.
At first I thought he was joking with me, but no, he certainly was not. I felt like a child being told off and having something taken away from me. There were about 3-4 girls working there and they were surprized to hear how arrogant and rude the owner was being. One of the girls said that they do have cheese so I could have it, the owner then cut across and said “no, NO I will NOT put cheese on the chips”. At this point I was so fed up, tired, disappointed and upset I just broke down to tears and turned around and left.
I rang the owner and told him there is no need to be rude and have a horrible attitude towards customers or he won’t have any customer. I asked “why have cheese as an extra on the menu if you will not give it to a paying customer?” he replied “it is for the meat, the burgers. I will not do it, so stop asking.” I THEN said I am coeliac to which he replied “well the cheese is not gluten free anyway, you cannot have it anyway so stop asking”. My partner was going to order the same thing and he is not gluten intolerant but the owner did not care. He was just an ignorant, horrible, person.
Worst customer service i have ever experienced.

Our second most recent visit (i.e. about two weeks ago) was awful. The fish smelled stale and tasteless, the chips were well overcooked. The only difference I can think of is that this was a phoned through order, so maybe had been sitting around a while. Definitely would not go back though.

Such good prices you would not see else where.
Love their new rice bran oil, means the batter is much less greasy (not even a drop on the paper!) and much easier on my sensitive stomach.
I love their kumara chips too, always nicely done, chunky pieces of crunchiness & then softness inside.
Would definitely go back for more. Great service, great food, great prices, what more can one ask??

Very yummy traditional kiwistyle fish and chips, your real homemade style heavier flour batter rather than the overly crispy won ton style batter we have all become accustomed to. Fish is fresh, chips taste like potatos (fancy that) they make their own. Not too bad for price my second favorite fish and chip shop in nz hamilton has my number 1.

However it suffers for it’s popularity.
It’s pretty common to be waiting 45mins+ in the cramped shop (pretty chilly too in winter) waiting for your order behind large phone orders.
Unless you’re willing to travel further – make sure to call ahead
