At The Chip Shop, our aim is to re-create that quintessentially Kiwi experience of the good old days: dropping in at the friendly neighbourhood chippy where you were greeted by name and you went home with a packet of moist, lightly battered fresh fish and chips made from scratch: that particular spirit of hospitality that money can’t buy, that laid-back era before “fast” food became a four letter word on so many levels. And that’s how we’ve built our extremely loyal customer base which stretches from Glendowie to Howick, from Manukau to North Shore. Our biggest concession to modern times has been in our choice of frying medium: we fry in healthy Rice Bran oil. Three years ago, in response to growing demand, 100% gluten, wheat and dairy-free batter was introduced as an option for whose suffering from gluten intolerance. After winning “Top 15 in Auckland” in ’06, ’07 and ’08, in 2009, we were named “Auckland’s Best Chip Shop” in “New Zealand’s Best Chip Shop” competition. Otherwise, it’s business as usual: peeling, chipping and frying over a ton of potatoes and kumaras every week, whipping up batter by the bucketful, buying and prepping fresh fish daily and generally giving folks a good feed at honest prices. Plus of course, plenty of name calling.

Gluten free heaven! Many takeaway outlets offer one or two token items for coeliacs, but this place is full of choices. I had fish, potato fritters and kumara chips, all delicious. Despite being pretty busy we only waited 20 minutes and the staff/owner still found time to say g’day and thanks to every customer. My husband thought I was mad wanting to go that far for fish and chips but it was well worth the drive from the north shore. We’ll be back!

We got fish n chips there yesterday.
The food looked great. The fish, fritters and hotdogs looked great.

There was one problem though.

It was like the oil had totally absorbed into the batter.
But you wouldn’t know it until you tasted it.
It was so greasy and oily on the inside.
2006 – 2009 was a long time ago.

Grabbed dinner here last night. Fish, chips and a potato fritter. Crikey the fish was good, the potato fritter excellent and the chips nice. Very good food, lovely friendly staff, brilliant! And i even got an extra potato fritter thrown in. Bonus! Worth the journey from Titirangi.

We have had takeaways a couple of times from the The Chip Shop. The first time they were good the second they were great. Fish and chips would seem to be a simple meal to cook however so many places kill this classic. These guys do a great job.

Worth traveling a few km’s to get to.

Can only give 5 stars, or else I would get more.

What a difference good staff and good food makes,

always a shame to come to the last chip, where as most places im over them half way,

cooked perfect, just right amount of salt,

the batter of the fish is enjoyable also, has a puffy crispiness to it,

And kumara chips that arent stuck together like most

definately worth the visit, friendly staff, took 2 other people who went back 2 times in the same week, they loved it so much

I am a first time visitor to The Chip Shop and have just finished eating my chip buttie lunch with the team at work – we all agree that the chips were amazing! Will have to try the fish next time :) Don’t believe the negative reviews – they were very friendly and the chips were ready when they said they would be. Thanks guys!

Simply the best. Other fish & chip shops should go here to see how it’s done. And friendly service to boot. I’m a really fussy person & I can’t fault these guys. And this is not based on one or two visits … Like all the locals who have returned week after week for the past five or more years we know this place cannot be beaten!

Owner made me cry. My partner and I were on a weekend trip to Auckland a few weeks ago. Being Coeliac (gluten intolerant), I researched gluten free friendly places to eat in Auckland. I was pleased to read there is a chip shop about 30-40 mins bus journey from the city in Mt Eden that do gluten free batter, catering for dietary requirements.
I am not familiar with Auckland so I rang the chip shop for directions a few times on the way.
Finally we arrived there and I asked for a simple bag of chips. As extras on the menu it stated “cheese $1.50”, so I asked for some cheese on top of the chips. The owner shook his head in dismiss. He did not even speak, just shook his head vigorously.
At first I thought he was joking with me, but no, he certainly was not. I felt like a child being told off and having something taken away from me. There were about 3-4 girls working there and they were surprized to hear how arrogant and rude the owner was being. One of the girls said that they do have cheese so I could have it, the owner then cut across and said “no, NO I will NOT put cheese on the chips”. At this point I was so fed up, tired, disappointed and upset I just broke down to tears and turned around and left.
I rang the owner and told him there is no need to be rude and have a horrible attitude towards customers or he won’t have any customer. I asked “why have cheese as an extra on the menu if you will not give it to a paying customer?” he replied “it is for the meat, the burgers. I will not do it, so stop asking.” I THEN said I am coeliac to which he replied “well the cheese is not gluten free anyway, you cannot have it anyway so stop asking”. My partner was going to order the same thing and he is not gluten intolerant but the owner did not care. He was just an ignorant, horrible, person.
Worst customer service i have ever experienced.

I’ve eaten here about 5 times, and the food was delicious! the decor is quaint (typical fish and chip shop), but you don’t get fish and chips for such shallow things. the important thing is the food! Good on them for doing such a good job with the gluten-free batter too! I hadn’t had battered fish for about 10 years before discovering them – I had occassionally eaten chips though, so hadn’t forgotten the difference between good and bad chips. these are great!

I have eaten takeaways from The Chip Shop twice. The first time I thought the food was great, the chips were thick cut, crunchy without being too dry and the fish was tasty.

Our second most recent visit (i.e. about two weeks ago) was awful. The fish smelled stale and tasteless, the chips were well overcooked. The only difference I can think of is that this was a phoned through order, so maybe had been sitting around a while. Definitely would not go back though.

Hi Nicki, Firstly our apologies that you had a negative experience when you ordered food from us. And secondly, thanks for sharing your feedback. Interestingly, you have pointed out the biggest drawback of serving fish and chips, which is that they just DO NOT…    More »

We tried this place after reading all the reviews and what amazing food! It’s the first fish/chips experience I’ve had since being here in Auckland and it was great not having it dripping with grease! The kumara fritter was excellent along with the fried Mars bar that my husband insisted we try. Sweet owners too! Can’t wait to come back.

Great little traditional kiwi Fish n chips shop, run like the old days by hardworking couple.

Such good prices you would not see else where.

Love their new rice bran oil, means the batter is much less greasy (not even a drop on the paper!) and much easier on my sensitive stomach.

I love their kumara chips too, always nicely done, chunky pieces of crunchiness & then softness inside.

Would definitely go back for more. Great service, great food, great prices, what more can one ask??

We went to this place because we were driving around on a friday night and saw the massive cue outside.
Very yummy traditional kiwistyle fish and chips, your real homemade style heavier flour batter rather than the overly crispy won ton style batter we have all become accustomed to. Fish is fresh, chips taste like potatos (fancy that) they make their own. Not too bad for price my second favorite fish and chip shop in nz hamilton has my number 1.

This is my favourite fish and chip shop in all of Auckland. Love the home made chunky chips and great service, the lovely guy who is probably the owner is always friendly and talks to the kids. Someone complained about the wait – but if you phone ahead like I do its always ready on time, even on a Friday.

Having been gluten free all my life and never being able to have fish and chips like everyone else I have been so excited to find this fish and chip shop which has gluten free battered fish (and sausages etc etc). The quality is fantastic too!

Excellent fish and chips and curries, we have tried many places in One Tree Hill, Royal Oak and Onehunga and this beats the other by miles. Very friendly owners too. Well done guys.

The chip shop now have gluten-free flours, cake mix, bread mix, gravy mix, soup mix and many more. I have baked with the gluten-free flour and it is the best I’ve baked with, because you don’t have to adjust the recipe for dryness and it has just a bit more elasticity than rice flour. Keep up the good work Chip Shop!!

This is the best, (if the only) proper Fish and Chip shop in the Royal Oak area.

However it suffers for it’s popularity.

It’s pretty common to be waiting 45mins+ in the cramped shop (pretty chilly too in winter) waiting for your order behind large phone orders.

Unless you’re willing to travel further – make sure to call ahead

Quite possibly this is the best and most reliable fish and chip shop in Auckland. We are very fussy about fish and chips. We prefer to cook our own, because I’d prefer not to eat fatty, tasteless fish. The meals are good value, fresh, perfectly cooked and seasoned. We really love catching up with the owner and staff because they are so friendly and ‘real’. I was appalled at the comment left about ‘a flirty cook’. That guy needs to get a life. The staff are so professional and such good chefs. Welcoming environment and affordable takeaways is a winner in our mind!!!

It’s a case of too much choice. If I want Indian, I’ll go to an Indian takeaway. The burger was so so, nothing like the “Uncles” type burger I was expecting and the chips tasted off? Maybe the healthy oil they use? Service, the only reason I’d go back would be to see the very good looking Indian lady again that consistently flirted with me.

Hi, I’m one of the owners of The Chip Shop, the good-looking Indian lady that Criss, refers to as “flirty”. Thank you Fran, another reviewer, for pointing out that this gentleman needs to get a life. I myself could not have expressed that sentiment quite so…    More »
