Over priced and meals are small, everyone was still hungry after eating and there was 15 of us. Steaks were very badly cooked and all steaks (3 from our table) went back to the kitchen twice as they were under cooked, blue not medium and were not eaten in the end as they could not get them right, the vegetarian option which was halloumi, not an expensive meal to produce but still a $35 dollar main and not big enough to feed a small appetite) we will not be going back to Cullens ever!!!

Table for two. Apparently a Hamilton icon, but I had not been there before.
Service: Was very good indeed. Probably a five star effort by the “camp” guy who made our night memorable!
Certainly knew his stuff and was on the ball the whole night. Well done.
Food: Great reputation, good delivery. Light on quantity, but well cooked and prepared. NOT at the cheaper end of the scale!! Four stars.
Atmosphere: Well patronised. Restaurant building is nothing particularly flash on the face of it, but it works well. Four stars.
Overall, well worth going to. I think this place is up for sale so not sure what the future holds.

A solid Hamilton favorite–good service, can be counted on for a good experience. I’ve been dining at Cullen’s for nearly 20 years, and have never had a bad meal.
They’ve recently begun offering degustation menus. Wow, what a nice evening! The series of dishes was definitely a cut above: there was a definite taste theme to the evening, the different dishes were all perfectly cooked, and the presentation was thoughtful and interesting. Cullen’s is towards the top end of pricing for Hamilton, but well worth it for the consistently good experience.

Always a favourite and a definate safe choice when dining out.
Menu always good, food always fresh, service always good.
I like eating outside during the summer but the indoors is now really nicely decorated and was really cosy by the real fire when we went last.
I love, love, LOVE the brownie there and my brother always goes for their beef cheeks which he says are awesome. (Beef rump, not face cheeks!)
Will be taking our Gran there soon for a fantastic birthday celebration – can’t wait!

first time at this restaurant. was keen to try it but very disappointed. the food was average. my steak was supposed to be rare but came out more like medium. the brownie was dry and hard to eat. service was good even though we had dirty spoons and paper napkins with dessert…..but over all unhappy with the food and seriously overpriced…….. there’s plenty of good food places in the vicinity, pity i didn’t try else where.

I’ve been there four times now and I can tell you that the macerated strawberries are to die for.

We’ve been there a few times now and have had from very enjoyable to life memorable experience. The menu often changes and some of the creations are very original. Fish and meat are always cooked to perfection. Service is warm and very professional.
Just one thing though: avoid the sashimi with tempura… Too classic and actually too pricey (compared to what you would get from the japanese restaurants around town).
It is a place where you want to be adventurous…

I dined for lunch here today with a friend. The first thing that struck me about this restaurant was that the wait staff are older than is typical in Hamilton restaurants – and what a difference their maturity made. The fish options and the special was explained with confidence. Our orders were taken in a timely manner and our food came faster than I expected, especially since I had ordered risotto. The staff were attentive – but not in your face. We had a nice glass of wine. Coffee at the end was delicious – good coffee is important to me. Prices were fair. There were heaps of choices on the menu…more than was necessary really. This restaurant has been around forever and once again it didn’t disappoint.

I had a meal here about 3 weeks ago, what an amazing treat. The starter, main and dessert were all fantastic, i dined early and watched the place fill up quickly, and this was a tuesday night. The service was attentive and helpful on meals that were popular, i had the lamb and it was so good. The next time i’m in Hamilton i will be returning, thanks Cullens

Have been going here for a couple of years now when in Hamilton for work. The food and service is always great and its as good if not better than most of the top Auckland restaurants. We had a table of 10 last night and was one of the best meals i can remember.

Amazing food and though the service was hurried it was very friendly. I would suggest the Polenta main as it is a delicious Vegetarian option… The lamb wasn’t bad either!!

We keep going back here. The service has improved a great deal. Their menu has changed a couple of times since I last reviewed this place too. I have to say, their seafood chowder is very good. Thick, full of veges and lots of seafood. I’m feeling hungry just thinking about it.

Love this restaurant, consistently new seasonal & tasty dishes available & the wine list is very well chosen. This place has been around for a while & for good reason. I fully recommend dining here.

We often go here for lunch as the coffee is consistently good. The service is very hit and miss. Some of the wait staff are friendly and professional. However one time after taking a coffee order the waitress sat down and talked to her friend while we waited 15 minutes for the coffee we ordered.
We had dinner there not long ago and I was very impressed by the flavour of the food. We must go back for dinner.
I like the redecoration, but still hate the concrete floor. I think that’s to blame for the noise and cold, though the lining of the roof and new joinery have helped that a lot.

Went there once and swore I’d never go back – and I haven’t. It was full, and everyone was packed in like sardines, far too close. Acoustics are horrible, it’s easier to hear people across the restaurant then it is to chat with folks at your own table. And the food was bland and forgettable. Service was average. Not worth the time.
