D4 on Featherston delivers on the owners Hospitality background in Ireland. The name comes from the owners Postcode in Dublin (Dublin 4). If you had never been to Ireland you would presume that all Bars in Ireland had fiddles on the walls and Diddley music playing all day. Other than tourist bars this certainly is not the case and D4 brings to Wellington a bar as close to any bar you will get in Ireland.

Great food and great service at a fair price in comfortable surrounds is what D4 delivers on. Being Independent from The Breweries D4 stocks the best range of tap beers in the Wellington CBD. 21 beers on tap and countingl. You have Guinness of course and your standard Speights and Montheiths Golden on tap but it is the Boutique beers that stand it out. Award winning Tuatara Pilsner can be enjoyed aswell as Tuatara Porter served from an old style Hand Pump. As well as these there is Emersons Bookbinder, Epic Pale Ale and every month they have a guest beer which gets chosen by a lucky customer. Asahi on tap is a must try with D4 having exclusive rights in the Wellington CBD for this product on tap.

Corporates are very at home in D4 shouting important clients excellent food with great service but in a very relaxed yet professional atmosphere. D4 bustles come 5pm with the busy CBD workers quenching their thirsts after a hard day in the office.

I’ve had some okay breakfasts and lunches here.
Service in the week tends to be better than weekend.

Last weekday lunch there came with a “complimentary” PLASTIC shard tucked into my meal. When I raised the issue with the waitress, I got given the ‘shhh’ finger over lips – they replaced my meal, but absolutely no budging on giving me something different/a discount at payment time. I won’t be going back… ever.

This review is based on my breakfast experience, which was not a good one. Firstly, I have to eat a Gluten Free diet, so I asked if they had any Gluten Free bread – they did not. Although this was disappointing, it is not the reason for my bad review. I found the waitress to be rude/sarcastic and not particularly accommodating. She said they have no hollindaise??!! It’s breakfast. The portions were small. It was nothing exciting.

I took a business associate to D4 last Friday night hoping to have a glass of wine and something to eat. We were rudely moved on from a table and told it was reserved (even though it didn’t have a sign on it when we sat down) and as there was nowhere else to sit we stood at the bar to drink the expensive glasses of wine we had already paid for. We were again rudely told to move on and then left the place without finishing the wine. We were not in the way and were not obstructing anyone but were made to feel like we were nothing but a nuisance. I have taken business colleagues to this place on several occasions but this will be the last time I take anyone there.

I have been to D4 several times and each time enjoyed the meal I have had. If you are going with larger numbers say over 4 people and dining on a week day or night I would highly recommend you book. This is a VERY busy restaurant. Dermot is lovely and very helpful. And D4 is always willing to accommidate. Definatley a great place to check out and have a great meal.

Being extremely close to work, I eat on average at least once a week here for lunch and have no hesitation about taking clients there for lunch. Dinner can be hit and miss affair as the place becomes a popular drinking venue after work but if you are fortunate, the menu is the same!
The beer and wine list are comprehensive.
The menu has has been refined since it first opened in October 2007. The lack of a cheesecake for dessert has been long promised and its addition to the dessert menu is long overdue. Testing is currently underway.
The table to get for lunch is the corner table overlooking the corner of Featherston and Brandon Streets. It is great for people watching when the table conversation needs some spark.
The owner/manager is Dermot Kelly, the highly regarded former manager of the Black Harp (part of the nearby Troika of bars), my previous “local” restaurant. When I returned to the Black Harp after D4 had opened, we were disappointed with the food and the service so all the good things left with Dermot. D4′s clientele have followed Dermot from the Black Harp so many people are still not aware of its presence due to the lack of a large ground floor area.
The service is exceptional and once the staff get to know you, you really need to keep your wits about you.
They do have a loyalty club card but I am still trying to work out what the benefits are.
