I just signed up to write a review. Since I am from Germany, I can tell the the cook cooks awful german meals. I doen’t taste even 50% as the real german food. Quite upsetting to know that there is not proper german restaurant in Auckland. Really disappointed about this place, i am never going back.

Our group of hungry friends is about to embark on our second “Great Schnitzel Challenge” and I can’t wait. The first time was absolutely awesome! Saying the meals are generous is an understatement, they are huge! The men got on to the challenge of eating ALL of their massive schnitzel while us ladies did our best to get through half! I’d definitely recommend skipping breakfast and lunch before going to dinner here. Great atmosphere, awesome place to dine…can’t wait for our return visit in 2 weeks time!

Our family (2 adult daughters) went there last night. When inquiring about seating availability, staff member seemed rather brusque. Once seated, we felt that we were being ignored and after 20 minutes, we had to signal for a wait staff’s attention. To be fair, all the staff appeared to be very busy; but we felt our presence should have been acknowledged, even to say: “Will be over, to see you, shortly”. Or similar.

After we got the attention, there was an improvement in our darkening mood: drinks that we ordered came in a reasonable time as with our mains. Amazing, what a friendly smile from the waitress can do, to lighten the mood.

The portions were more than generous, the French fries and mashed potato were all good. The actual taste was OK-plus. Value for money: 8.5/10

I love Der Metz!

Good atmosphere and I’ve always found the wait staff to be very friendly.

Admittedly I have never been to Germany so can’t comment on the authenticity of the food, but what I can tell you is it’s delicious and comes in enormous portions. If you’re hungry I recommend the Wienerschnitzel, and if you’re thirsty a huge jug of their German tap beer goes down well.

People have their right to an opinion, but given the price and the portions of food I can’t really see why anyone would want to complain about this place. Real bang for your buck.

Wait staff were good, contrary to what others experienced. The food was crap though. I had lasagne with salad. The salad looked like it had been chopped 2 days ago cos the edges were all brown. The lasagne had way too much of some herb or spice in the mince and hence waaay too strong. I ate the pasta and left the rest. Desserts were good though. Other friends found their meals ok, but not above average. Expensive considering that you get meals so big you can’t finish them, and they were pretty bland.

Rude, lazy staff – whose average age is about 12. Bland, disappointing food which sucks because German food is usually delicious (aside from the sauerkraut which wasn’t bad). Had to wait for an hour to get a drink. Don’t do it!

I signed up just so I could write a review about this place so as to inform others before they spend their hard earned cash. I can only but echo what almost everyone else has said about this place. The service was okay, but the food was very, very ordinary. I went to the Oktoberfest this year and enjoyed, among other things, the German cuisine. The worst food I ate in Germany was sooo much better than the food I had at this restaurant. Prices appeared to be reasonable. It’s a real shame, this place has HUGE potential, but the bland food ruins the entire experience. Please somebody do something before it’s too late!!!!

Great food, enormous meals and fantastic range of German beer. Unfortunately they had only 2 waiting staff for a full restaurant with multiple large groups, so we (group of 2) were pretty much ignored, so had to continually remind them of our existence!

This was the worst German food I have ever had. When visiting a German restaurant, I expect to be served German style potato salad, not English style. The saurkraut was soggy and the smoked chop was cold inside — not room temperature, COLD.
The wait staff was understaffed and overwhelmed with just a half house.

I am Bavarian and have been with the family tonight their and was impressed with the portions and presentation which was quite authentic. However, the taste of the pork roast with dumplings, the medallion with spaetzle, and chicken with spaetzle was not a pleasant but a “boring” experience. My son directly complaint about the flat i.e. not sparkling apple-schorle. The huge portion of spare-rips seemed taste-wise ok. I normally do not write reviews but since reviews of this restaurant triggered my interest months ago, I have to vent my disappointment here….. The next day we figured that the doggy-bag had only the meat. The spaetzle and potato salad have disappeared. My Asian wify is very upset since she hardly had eaten half her portion and was very much looking forward especially to the popular spaetzle noodles. Wify called the restaurant and expressed her dissatisfaction and that she would like to have her spaetzle and potato salad and was told that they normally asked to pack only the meat! After some discussion we could go and pick up our spaetzle and potato salad. … I overcame my pride, cruised down to the restaurant and after collecting the prepared spaetzle and potato salad doggy-bag, I was approached by the owners and encouraged to express any dissatisfaction on the spot to allow them to justify and satisfy the customer. We had a bid of a chat and I was impressed by their efforts undertaken to satisfy me as a customer. I even had to eat another meal which was quite tasty, especially after adding a bit salt, and as expected, I struggled to finish it. From my roller-coaster experience I would like to encourage anybody to express their dissatisfaction on the spot. These operators seem to care about customer satisfaction … good on them!

A classic example of getting what you paid for. Huge schnitzel meals, very reasonably priced, so value for money, but definitely quantity over quality. The smoked pork chop was tasteless and a little bit tough. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff make up a bit for the average food.

I visited ‘Der Metz’ last Saturday as part of a big group. The service was friendly and efficient, the list of German/Austrian beers is great – however, the quality of the food is appalling.

Being Austrian myself I am embarrassed that this is how German/Austrian cuisine is represented in this part of the world. The portions are huge (almost repulsive) but lacking in every other way. I would much rather pay more for a smaller Schnitzel that is of higher quality, less salty and maybe pan fried? What about home made chips rather than package bought ones? Similar to the Schnitzel, the venison was tough, the Spaetzle dry and the sauce mediocre.

I am saddened to think this is how locals perceive our cuisine.

I have eaten here stacks of times before and really enjoyed it, but tonight have just had one of the worst meals of my life. As always I ordered the schnitzel – the first time it arrived it was cold and served with the wrong sauce and the second it tasted like it had been slow cooked in lard and was inedible (and don’t get me wrong, I love fatty food). In the past I have enthusiastically recommended this restaurant – I now equally enthusiastically recommend that people avoid it.

Very authentic German kitchen I would say. If you are from Germany, and you miss good sausages and Schnitzel, you will be happy here. Giant very tasty meals!

This place should come with a side of gym membership. Certainly not for the weight watchers. Tasty food, good service, large portions.German beer in abundance. Not fine dinning, not silver service, but if you love this type of food and you’re in the neighborhood well worth stopping in.

Went to der metz for the first time. There are now 2 restuarants identical next door to each other. Pick the original one as it has a better atmosphere. Went as a group of 4 with friends who had been there a couple times before. Beer good, food not so good if you are keeping healthy. Everything is deep fried – Schnitzel, fries…mash, sauces, scallops all has cream with it, maybe the potato salad also…potato dumplings are powdered and the saurkrat and red cabbage are from a can so our friend tells us…our greek salad was definately different, more like a green salad with some olives and feta in it, not made the proper way and the caesar had too many achovies in it and was soaked in dressing so was abit soggy…other than that the desserts were delicious, definately try the applestrudel…however dont come here if you are a vegeterian…you can only have a salad or some noodle dish that is just noodle and mozarella. Not sure if i will be back, maybe for a beer.

value for money, fantastic. the fact that its in a posh place but they are reasonable speaks volumes.

the food was spectacular in terms of volume! very tasty, if you are a light eater, beware of what you order!

i will go back and do regularly

We had a table of 8 – which is a bit squishy in there but added to the atmosphere! We went with very high expectations (we called it the Great Schnitzel Adventure) and they were met. Lovely, knowledgable staff, the meals were HUGE, and delicious. Great value for money (although my cordon bleu was a bit light on the cheese!). Fantastic, fun, genuinely retro restaurant – worth the trip there from anywhere in Auckland!

Absolutely brilliant restaurant. It has become a favourite with us and we take all of our visitors from out of town as well.. can’t recommend it highly enough. You will never get through entree, main and desert and only a brave person will try two of the three!

Der Metz is a fantastic place for dinner we go there often.
They have opened an Italian Restaurant next door which we have now been to 3 time with 6 then 5 then 8 other people.
It was horrible each time.
Last time we got there at 7.20pm and didn’t get our meals until 9.30pm.
We nearly walked out.
The other times the meals were not up to scratch.
It’s a shame because they have a great spot.
So this is a total of 19 people who want be going back. Plus word of mouth.

With so few German restaurants in Auckland, this is a gem. They offer authentic German food which is really hearty and tasty. I can vouch for the Nurnberger sausages and knoedls! There’s also a great range of German beers and wines and real German waitresses.
