This is a little cute restaurant trying for the New Orleans style.
We had French Quater Steak with homemade steak fries – very good
Also the gumbo – which i must say was so bad i did not eat it – i suggest is you are going to make gumbo that bad dont make it at all. The waiter was in and out like a jack in the box. Would i return – no, better food elsewhere

Went here last week with a voucher, and the decor is lovely, the only down side it was a little cold. My partner really enjoyed his steak said it was really good and it was a good sized portion. I had Jumbulaya it was nice I enjoyed it had a slight kick just right, we had a side of the fries, yummy thick chips. The service was great the waiter could not do enough for you. We brought a bottle of wine and it was a treat to have the glass filled for you by the attentive waiter.
WE enjoyed the experience and the prices were reasonable.

Went to check this place out after having great experiences at Sweet Mother’s Kitchen, a Cajun/Creole/Mexican restaurant in Wellington. The first time we went a couple of months ago, we could barely get a table at de Ville because there had been an offer on a daily deal site. We ended up going on a weekday after failing to make a reservation for a weekend, and still ended up waiting for a table at the bar next door (where we were offered a free house wine—more than we expected since we had not made a booking). Tonight, when we returned, we were the only diners there. A very odd experience.

The food is actually pretty decent, depending on what you order. The gumbo was very good, and the ribs were succulent and served with grilled corn cobs. The one vegetarian option, quickly became boring, however, due to the volume of pearl barley stuffed into the deliciously grilled bell peppers. The corn bread was also different to what I expected, more soda bready than polenta cake-like.

Since we first went, the restaurant has made their sponsorship from Tabasco even more obvious. Not only is a sauce pairing now printed on the menu, but the waitress ran us through each sauce bottle before putting the rack down.

At around 9pm, a live band started playing at the Crossroads bar next door. We left shortly after, but not before sampling their Chocolate Chess Pie (okay but not heavenly).

What we missed (based on Sweet Mother’s, never having eaten at New Orleans) were beignets and key lime pie. Looks like we’ll need to search elsewhere for that.

Had a bit of a mixed experience. My friend had booked a table for 10, and when we turned up, they had mislaid the booking, so we had to wait while they set up a private dining room for us. Once the room was set up, it was lovely, like someone’s living room, with a fireplace and a couch. My friend told us that she had had a lot of trouble getting the booking made – one guy on the phone was completely rude to her. Once we ordered things went more smoothly. The vegetarian main was stuffed peppers with barley – there was supposed to be candied pumpkin too but there was hardly any. It looked really bland and boring. I had the ribs which for New Zealand I was impressed that they had a decent version of BBQ which is a specialty where I come from. The meat was very tender and the potatoes it came with were good. The side of seasonal vegetables was OK but I thought the $7 price tag was steep. Unfortunately when we went to pay it was rather unpleasant as the waitress directed us to pay in the bar, when there was a till in the dining room. The bar was very loud and crowded and full of drunken rugby fans, and it took us a long time to pay our bill. I complained and the waiter told me to “calm down”(????) For that price I really expect better service, and if I’m unhappy the waitstaff had better jump to it to make it right!

So, I’d read the reviews on here and was a tad reluctant to make a booking as some had not been all that complimentary but I’m glad I went. A group of five of went on Saturday night. Freezing outside but it was warm and welcoming inside.
The wait staff were friendly and efficient. I ordered the calamari entree and it was a generous serving. Some other entrees were not as large ie: Goats cheese wrapped in prosciutto but this was explained to us by the waiter beforehand. I had the chicken gumbo as a main and it was tasty and satisfying. Exactly what I needed on a cold evening. The general consensus of the group was that the food was good but needed to be spicier. We expected a bit more kick since it’s Cajun/creole cuisine. The Tabasco selection provided was well used by all of us.
The music was great! I’d love to have some of the selection.
The toilets need a bit of a makeover, not grubby but not pretty.

Things started well when we arrived…. but it was a cold night and so was the restaurant (really cold) waiter was friendly. We had a DaildyDo Voucher… but ordered a Starter to share… it was yummy…we were still cold…I ordered Steak it was full of grizzle and the prawns on top dryed out and rubbery my husband had a cajun dish also with prawns (dryed/rubbery)with not alot of spicey rice infact less food on his plate than what was on the starter?!! The waiter didn’t want to know but the manager was really good and apoligised and said he would have the owner call us?? – we were very disappointed having been to New Orleans we had hoped for a great meal…. we left… by this time we were really freazing…. just not good enough :-(

A friend & I went to De Ville’s for lunch for the 1st time. Was happily surprised with both the lunchtime menu offered and the young man who was serving us. We both thought the portions were generous & well presented. Loved the ribs & the Cajun chicken was also well received. Will make this place a regular lunchtime haunt. FYI – good pricing for Ponsonby.

I eat out often enough, but the food at DeVille was different from the usual fair you find on Ponsonby. It tasted great and the ornate setting suited the theme. I would call the food comfort food. Good portions, and the food had good flavour – but could have added a bit more though. The waiter was excellent and very friendly. I am going again next week.

Went to Deville’s early in the week on a cold night, and it was fairly quiet with only two other tables occupied, though a few people were starting to come into Crossroads bar when we left at 9.30pm. Loved the ornate decor and enjoyed the jazz music though they need to ensure albums don’t repeat. Ordered crab cakes and oyster bloody mary shot for appetisers and both were delicious! For mains we had the seafood gumbo special and jambalaya, both of which were nice enough though a little bland and the shellfish seemed to be for adornment only. The gumbo flavours and texture were interesting to try for the first time, but both dishes required a lot of salting and we only noticed the tobasco sauce condiments on the way out as these weren’t offered unfortunately. We shared brownie for dessert, and the unusually light density was perfect after fairly heavy meals. I’m not very familiar with Cajun food so I’m not sure how authentic Deville’s menu is, but it certainly sounds Cajun and appealing, so combined with very reasonable prices we’re keen to return, probably mid-late week when it’s hopefully busier. Would rate it 3 1/2, better than OK.

Very disappointing. I got a online voucher for a meal at deVille restaurant and was quite excited.
We arrived at the resaturant and no1 was there to serve us. We eventually got the bar-mans attention and he sat us in the corner of his bar and told us to wait. EVENTUALLY the waitress came and seated us with our menus. She left us waiting to order for about 10mins too long, left us to get our own water, and when she did take our order we were waiting for 15mins for our drinks…
We ordered the jambalaya and the gumbo which were also very disappointing. VERY bland. I was able to get them down with bucket loads of salt and tabasco but only just.
Service and food were both well below par. Never again.

I decided to have a meal before the open mic night on Thurs from the new revamped restaurant. I ordered the Cajun chicken main, it was very nice, I was well impressed. I found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating, I would not hesitate to dine there again

earlier tonight we stopped in for a drink at Crossroads Bar where we got a preview of the menu for de villes(restaurant) which apparently is part of the same establishment, and being cajun food lovers we decided to wander in. The restaurant itself was pretty cool(like some sort of old school decadence) and the guy attending to us was pretty friendly and efficient. We both ordered the French Quater steak meal which is why I decided to write this review. This was cooked to perfection and a great meal allround. Well done, keep it up, and see you again soon!

I was a little bit apprehensive about dining at Crossroads based on some of the previous reviews on this site, but I am a firm believer of “Don’t knock it til you try it” so myself, my wife and our 2 young children went in for dinner. We arrived to a very warm welcome from the staff, who promptly sat us down in the revamped De Ville Dining Lounge and took our orders. Now I am not sure if the staff are the same, but we were served quickly and efficiently, and we had none of the previous problems encountered in the other reviews. In fact, when our baby started crying in his pram, our waiter offered to push him around, so we could enjoy our meals more fully. I had a sirloin steak served on mash with shrimp and my wife had the Jumbalaya, a tasty stew like dish with rice. Both meals were cooked perfectly (I told my wife the steak was the best I had ever had, earning myself a slap in the process) and were very generous sized. Afterwards we had cocktails made by the talented barstaff and enjoyed their open mike night.

In short, I have no idea why this place has bad reviews. We loved it and will definately be back for more

Had a nice quiet meal with the family on a Wednesday night. Great friendly and warm service, and the food was fantastic. Highly recommend the steak with shrimp… yum! We will certainly be back there for more.
