The Cuisine & Restaurant has been revamped for 2012. The new Kitchen team is offering wonderful seasonal, local produce: the “Know thy Farmer” philosophy predominates.

Dransfield House (circa 1876) and the three oak trees on the front of the property are listed by the Historic Places Trust. The protected trees are the only remaining oak trees that once lined the entire length of Willis Street.

The restaurant offers wonderful intimate dining with two open fire places, antique sculptures and Queen Anne furniture. With an a la carte menu, a bistro menu and a platter menu there is always something for everyone to enjoy. Cuisine examples include Crab ravioli, Duck pate, Whole crayfish, Escargot with oak essence, White asparagus tortellini, Lamb & Roquefort, Venison frites & Wagyu to name a few.

The Piano Room offers a wonderful evening of secluded dining for 5-10 guests, with its own fire place, access to the balcony and personal pianist, this grand yet intimate room will make any function or event a night to remember. Cuisine examples include the a la carte menu and also 5 and 15 course degustation menus, the room was recently used by discerning customers for an 18 course menu showcasing modernist cuisine.

The Spire Lounge Bar is a great place to have a quiet drink before your dinner or just to sit on Louis XIV furniture in front of the biggest fire place on the estate and listen to some smooth jazz. A full cocktail menu is available.

We were very pleasantly surprised from our dining experience at the Mediterranean Restaurant for New Year’s Eve. The atmosphere was warm, cosy and elegant in the beautifully restored Dransfield House. The service was warm and friendly without being over the top. The menu offered a lovely selection of mediterranean dishes starting with various tasting platters, light meals, larger dinner meals and of course delicious desserts. We started with the Mediterranean Platter to share between 4 people. Everything on it tasted amazing, possibly next time we might get 2 of them or this one plus one of the other 4 on offer. As mains we had the Beef Dukkah (200grams eye fillet on homemade Egyptian mousaka with the most delicious sauce), my husband had the Egyptian Mami Kebab which he found also delicious, our friends had the Beef Dukkah and the Spanish Salmon Grill. We all enjoyed our meals immensely and cleared our plates. The only grumble was that the salmon piece did not look like it was 200grams as described on the menu, rather more 100grams. We were offered an extra piece when it was mentioned to the waitress. This did not ruin our meal in any way. As a finish to the meal we had 3 different desserts (Um Ali – middle eastern bread pudding, Cheesecake du jour and Banana Tart). These were also very enjoyable. We were then invited to another dining room where the piano player was and relaxed on the plush sofa to enjoy a port and some music. The owner Kevin joined us and we all talked and sang along with the music. Was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I have had.

This place is a bit mixed with their cuisine. As my partner described it, “I had a Turkish platter, then for my main New Zealand lamb, cooked French style and drunk it with a Japanese beer”.

We were the only ones (a group of 7) there on a Saturday night. The service was very slow considering.

I think that they are trying to expand from being just a wedding venue, but they still need a bit of work. Food was nice, well presented but my main was cold in the middle. Everyone elses meals were good and they liked it. They didnt have everything on the desert menu available either.

The owner introduced himself and he took us on a tour and told us the history of the house and how they had repaired and reused wood after a fire in the mid 1990′s.

An interesting place to visit.
