The food is excellent. It’s the best Chinese food I have ever experienced. Very hard to find Cantonese food of this quality.
Since having moved to Chch because of circumstances, I have been missing the food, and have yet to find anything here anywhere near the quality of the Eastern Egret.
Yes the restaurant food is more expensive than the takeaways, which it should be as you are also dining in. At times the staff are busy and there is a wait, but no one is perfect.
i still say if you want to experience top quality Cantonese food then take a trip to the Eastern Egret.

Arrived, seated and waited for 20 minutes before we had to flag down the waiter to place an order, Waiter was hard to hear, surely and unhelpful with information on the menu and portion sizes. Food was good but we had ordered steamed rice that did not arrive, when asked at the bar for the rice the waiter shouted to the owner for the rice and it still did not come. We had to help ourselves to water from the other end of the resturaunt and the non drinkers at our table were not offered anything from the bar. When we complained to the owner and she challenged the waiter he denied his poor service. This is very disappointing when taking out of town visitors to a resturaunt in which I had previously enjoyed good service and delicious food. I am now reluctant to return.

We booked a table for four, for 6.30 on Sat. 14th. January to celebrate my daughters 50th birthday. We were bang on time, and no-one greeted us to show us to our table, so we chose one by ourselves. We sat for about 5 minutes, no-one came to our table to give us water or menus, we had tried to catch a waiter/waitress’s eye a few times but to no avail !!! So we got our own water and my son-in-law approached the manager and got some menus. Other people (2 table-lots of them) who had arrived well after us were seated and served, and we still waited. There was no acknowledgement to us at all and after 20 minutes we just got up and walked out!
The staff were very rude to totally ignore us, and we all got the feeling that they couldn’t have cared less!
Gordon Ramsay would have had a “field-day” at the Eastern Egret (or as another said….the Eastern Regret! )

Food here was really nice. Tender meat, crispy vegies, and tasted great. Service was very quick too. Wished I lived closer.

Awesome as always. The best duck in NZ. Fast service and great food. BYO at a realistic price. The four happiness is worth travelling to get. Thanks ……………………………………………………………

I have been to this restaurant a couple of times but only in the takeaway area so far. I was left there standing for at least 23 minutes before I got served by an unfriendly waiter. I ordered the $15 meal (which is very-well priced) for me and my partner and was told that it would take approximately 15-20 minutes. We didn’t receive our meal until 45 minutes later and was more or less shoved of without any apology from the waiter for the long wait. Overall the meal was fantasic but very poor customer service indeed.
Dined in at Eastern Egret last night. Very busy night, luckily we were able to get a table without a booking. The food is consistently of the highest standard. I recommend to try the chicken vegetables and cashewnuts that come in a eatable potato basket and the orange beef …. absolutely delicious. Friendly wait staff, providing excellent service. Must try the ice cream sundae… amazingly presented and all the food is well priced!
Well done Eastern Egret, we will definitely be back!

I Always love eating here and am a regular customer, the food is fantastic and I always order the Duck (which you should book in advance) Sadie and son are great hosts, but if you have a big table make sure you book and order from the set menu. Sometime the service can be slow but hey its not a race.
See you all soon guys

Great service and fantastic food!
I was working close by this week and called for a lunchtime takeaway. Unfortunately they they weren’t open, but the chefs were there and made my order for me!
Thanks so much : )

The food is of a consistently high standard, but the service is always poor and very slow. We keep going back because of the menu. If you want to dine and then go on to a movie don’t plan to be out in a hurry.

My family and I have been going to Eastern Egret to celebrate special occasions for over 5 years and always enjoyed the experience. The food is consistently good (especially the roast duck)and NOT all deep fried. There is a wide variety of tasty menu choices to select from and the prices are no more than you would expect to pay at a decent sit down restaurant. (May I suggest McDonalds, if you’re looking for the cheaper dining experience?). The service is good and if I’ve ever had a concern, staff have always been very obliging in meeting my needs, which is why I’ve kept going back – remember, I wasn’t a regular on my first visit and the experience was still good enough for me to go back.

The food quality was good, and I have found its consistently good but you pay for, the prices are higher in comparison to other takeaways. The food is nice and the servings are generous but the customer service was bad again and been consistently bad and its really disappointing but i’ve come to expect it now. we were standing at the counter this time round and could see Sadie and her staff at the restaurant counter a couple of metres away and they didn’t even acknowledge us, a simple ‘Hi there, be with you in a moment’ would have gone a long way. We were left waiting for 10 minutes complaining about the serivce with another lady who was waiting before us to place her order before our orders was taken. We’ve chosen not to try dining in the restaurant because the prices are about 3 times more for the same food and we question the value of service we’d get. So if you like good food and don’t mind paying more for it, they’re great but be prepared for below average service.

Hi Diana. Just happened to come across your review. I am very suprised to see your comment regarding the price difference in meals be at restaurant dining or take out. The Takeaway meals are actually very good value for money being AT LEAST one third less than…

I have dined numerous times and have found the food to be delicious! Im surprised to read the review by Ricky and his experience because of the times I have gone there it has been fantastic.
HOWEVER, the old lady there, upon serving us with their green tea, was splashing it all over us, one would recommend a rain coat or umbrella least you be doused with hot tea
That aside, everything else was great. The time between meals was enough for the company we had to mingle and talk over drinks so all in all, some pretty experiences.

I have eaten here a few times now and I absolutely love the food, there’s lots to choose from, great seafood selection, yummy fried rice and it doesn’t feel like you’re getting a whole lot of frozen veges. Problem here is that service IS slow but nothing too bad, it just feels like you’re waiting that extra 5-10 minutes than you need to. And the other problem is the price. Rice is ordered separately from your meat choice so if you want a bit of fried rice you have to pay an extra $10 just for a small, and by the end of ordering takeaways (for 2!)I’ve paid $50 – a bit excessive for the type of food it is. BUT…it does taste good so I will still pay (but a bit reluctantly). But not that reluctantly because I’m grabbing some for dinner tonight

The previous review astounds me. I have been a fan of the Eastern Egret ever since Sadie opened. I have eaten and ordered take aways for years and on numerous occasions. I have found the standard consistently very high. The menu is tried and true and offers a vast selection.
