Some of the best places are to be found down the end of an alley. Manon being no exception, tucked back away from Newtown colourful street life.
Decor is trapped in time with lots of wood, it’s previous life being Swiss the result is very homely and snug, it’s almost like sitting around a table at home relaxed with friends, only you don’t have to cook. The fire is roaring the music is french and not intrusive.
The food is sumptuous and very french, well executed from the open to view kitchen (there were some large tables that night as well the kitchen didn’t skip a beat, it hummed) The floor staff were really great too. We were never left wanting for anything.
Wines- a nice mix of old and new world, reasonably priced.
My friends had the garlic snails beautifully presented, I had the Pate, delicious!
Lobster Ravioli was out as was the Goat so opted for the duck which was perfect with the brussel sprouts with a hint of maltiness. For dessert I opted for the Tamarillo Tart Tartan, beautifully presented, as was the cheese plate that was for one of group. I will be back and soon, great place for catching up around the table with great food, wine and a fire.

Hidden down the end of a quite alley is the best restaurant I’ve been to in Wellington. It’s the old Swiss Chalet restaurant with decor straight out of ‘Heidi’. Try everything on the menu, you’ll need to have a few visits. It’s worth the trek to Newtown just for the Garlic and parmasan escargot.

Great food, friendly staff, warm and cosy, definitely would recommend this place. Lovely open fire, fantastic place for a winter meal.

A little gem hidden away in Newtown. Incredible service, great food, lovely atmosphere….couldn’t ask for anything more. Food that rivals the best of them. Highly recommended

The best eating you can do in newtown – and right up there with the best in the city.
The staff are great and the decor floats my boat.
