We source only the freshest NZ seafood from the fish market 7 days a week. We offer Japanese panko crumbed pan fried fish as a healthier alternative, or we have a more traditional crisp light batter that is fried in clean canola oil.
Our gourmet agria fries are a hit with the locals, plus we have kumara fries. We also have a fresh fish counter for home cooking. Fish cakes and mussel fritters made daily on premise.

i hadn’t tried this place prior to last Saturday at about 6 . I went down with a few mates to try it out but found it was packed full of people waiting for there orders (must be great food then!) brought 2 crumbed tarakihi , 2 battered tarakihi, hot dog , and 2 lots of chips. the wait was quite long (staff said 20 mins but closer to 30) – we didnt really mind though. when we got home, the fish was light and literally melted in our mouths. light crispy batter and a lovely bread crum that was full of flavour. The chips probably needed a bit more salt but they were prefect texture, hot dog was alright no real comment on it. overall it was worth the long wait, and we were all pleased and definitley be coming back!

We have made 3 separate attempts to buy here over the 6 months. 1st time, the wouldn’t answer the phone. 2nd time, the eventually answered and then after we ordered we were told there would be a 40min wait. -Sorry, No Thanks.
The 3rd time was this week, just to grab some fresh fish for dinner. The fish looked good, it was $3kg more expensive than usual, -but I don’t mind supporting local if their good.
The 3 staff took some time to help me. No problem. We pick the fillets, weigh and price. But he decides to round the price up. We get that sorted only to discover they don’t take credit cards. I just didn’t have anything else on me.
Silly me for not being prepared, but after the 3rd failed attempt to buy there and the keystone cops routine inside. I give up.

We have tried this place three times now and tonight will be the last. They say on their homepage that phone orders are welcome however they take forever to answer their phone, if they even bother to pick it up. Tonight I felt lucky as I got through on my second try. They said our order would be 10 – 15 mins. I arrived after 15mins had passed, only to wait another 15mins for our order to be finished. Our order was not huge – 2 fish and 1 scoop of chips (which I was assured was plenty for two people) but even so, I was surprised when presented with a tiny parcel of food so after exiting the shop, I checked inside to make sure they had included everything. What I found was two pieces of fish approximately 7 or 8cm long (this is no exageration) and a smattering of chips. I went back inside and opened the packet to show the guy serving and, unprompted, even he exclaimed “oh s*#t” when looking at the portions. He brought another staff member over to explain and I was told that was the size of the portions and that the manger cut them himself. This is a complete rip-off as far as I’m concerned and got my money back. I instead went up the road to Satya and got great service and awesome food in just over 10mins.

Monday night 7 pm phone shop which is 100meters from home
They say to collect at 715 so I turn up and pay $25 for 2xcrumbed fish,1xfish cake,2 crunbed scollops fair enough.
But then sat there waiting and waiting finally got it at 755pm
Walked 100 meters home it was cold so ran back they said the staff was new and offered my half my money back and come back in 15 and get new fish so went home opened the pack the chips, scallops and fish cake all cold and chips were very bad cold and scoggy, so went back again said I would come back in 15 for a replacement when I got home again it had new chips no fish cake and 2 battered oysters not the 2 crumbed scallops I had ordered rang them up and met them in the street half way and got the fish cake and gave back the oysters and said no to going back to get the scallops.
This place I can see from my front door but don’t plan to go back will be safer to get in car I reckon.

The fish and chips are great, good batter good chips.
But the other weekend they closed at 8pm, on a sunday night.
I’ld suggest calling first, but they take about 20 minutes to answer their phones.
Could be an awesome fish and chip shop if they sorted out their service. But then they’re busy, so they probably don’t need to bother.

I have bought the fish&chips, fish burger, and hot dog I can say the fish has a lovely batter to it and was tasty and also the hotdog. The chips needed some more flavour to it but it was light and crisp. The fish burger was slighty dry may need more tartare sauce. But overall its worth it and I will go back.

Last week I took my friend and her two teenagers to the fish & chip shop for a treat. I’d been there before and had the fish burger – which was delicious (really fresh bun, perfectly cooked fish and delicious tartare sauce). We each had a piece of fish with chips and the older boy had a hamburger. The chips were to die for – lightly seasoned and obviously cooked in really nice oil. Josh declared the burger a 9/10 and we all really enjoyed the fish – it was Terakihi and melted in our mouths. They also had really good family meal deals. I hope this new business does well. They’ve obivously put a lot of effort into making this a really clean shop and have a great menu (that’s cheap too). What a welcome addition to the neighbourhood!

Fish was good but that was about all. The caramelized onions on my chicken burger were more like pickled onions and the relish was more like tomato sauce with mustard seeds in it. The chips were old and dull.
Not going back there.

Pluses:
– Lots of lemon wedges in pack
– Squid rings with panko batter were tasty
Minuses:
– Overcooked fish had no taste
– Small pieces of fish
– Hot Dogs were factory made
– Overcooked chips
– Some chips were made from old potatoes
– Menu said hot dogs came with relish yet it only had regular tomato sauce on it
Interesting:
– They don’t have bags for you to carry multiple items in
– Paper wrapper quickly got greasy and could have been another layer thicker
Verdict:
– We definitely won’t go back again!

I’m pretty committed to Mt Eden Fisheries and eat Fish and Chips once a week. I generally only buy Fish & Chips from places that sell fresh fish. However, I had to try the Fish & Chip Shop because it just opened around corner and looks great. Crab Sticks and Chips were delicious. However, I could not eat my fish because it tasted and smelt of ammonia. I wasn’t worried because it definitely seemed fresh. I expressed this to my 6 year old son who said “great, I’ll eat yours then” and promptly did so, loving it. I will get next weeks Fish & Chips from Mt Eden Fisheries.
