Last time we went Everything was average (at best) except for the service which was JUST TERRIBLE. The staff here make it quite obvious that they absolutely HATE their jobs.

I wouldn’t say it was filthy there, but I certainly wouldn’t say it was clean…..

Frankly I can see why it’s closed.

UPDATE: Dinner was great, everyone enjoyed. not one complaint or noticable ‘let-down’. They have obviously improved 10 fold and it was so busy some of us had to park on the street. some ideas of meat, sauce and vege combos on the wall or something would go down well on the wall or something and the highlight for most of us was the pancakes but everyone at our table, wished there was sprinkles to top the icecream and syrups. =)
~~~
I’m having a group birthday dinner there tonight. They said they were expecting quite a few big groups so shows that quite a few people are still going there which is a good sign.
Upon invite from the head office, we personally inspected it the other day to see for ourselves if shutting down for 3 days and upgrading to a B food grade made a big difference.
The only thing I found, from the long list of things from previous recent reviews, was rubbish bags in the garden by the entrance, which were gone by the time we left again, about 10 mins later.
The bar/booking chick was lovely, helpful and professional and all the meat and veges on the buffet looked very clean and fresh, however we were there just before opening.
I thought the pool might be nice to look at through the windows but apparantly it probably wont be lit up like in the pics Gengys have for advertising.. and it was green, because its winter apparantly;… looked like the ‘duck-couple’ were enjoying it thou!
Went to Gengys last week, I saw too many bad reviews here, and very scaried to try. but I found the food was ok, and the price is not expensive. I think they can improve the service some more.
Went to to gengy’s (Henderson) last night.
Here are some of the down sides to the night.
- found a hair in my meat
- had to eat with a dessert spoon as the waitress never brought us forks
- water was brought to us towards the end of our meal
- waitress was not friendly
- took about 10 or so minutes for our drinks to come even though there was only one other table in the whole resturaunt
- the meat was not being kept cold besides fans were on blowing on the meet (to keep cold? or to keep off insects?)
- the vegetables looked old and dry
Up sides to the night:
- the food was nice (besides the hair) and then men who cook the food are friendly despite the language barrier.
Gross. Went there with a group of about 25 people for a friend’s leaving dinner. When we saw it was an E rating I decided I would not eat there. The place was generally grubby, there was a lady cleaning upstairs who was just dropping the full rubbish bags down the stairs. I asked the bartender why they had an E rating and she said it was because there was a surprise inspection and there were too many rubbish bags out the back. What a lie as the following week there was a report in the newspaper about them being closed for massive cockroach infestation. They seem to have a wide selection of food but I would never go there to eat.
I went to Gengy’s on Saturday night for my dad’s birthday. My whole family and I weren’t happy. Just saw the grading it was an E which is very shocking and bad! Asked one of the staff about it, she said they closed for 3 days and had to clean the whole restaurant which they were being inspected unexpectly. The food wasn’t great it tasted off:/ and had to wait for 10 minutes for them to bring out more ice cream,all the Ice cream boxes were empty. I enjoyed gengy’s at first in 2006, felt they slipped and not the same. Disappointing and wasn’t worth the money at all! And surely won’t be going back again!!:/
First went here years ago (I think back around 2007?) and it was pretty good then, good service + great food…then…I’m not sure whats happened since then but we went back recently and I agree with what someone else said about flies…and yes don’t sit on the right, flies/ sandflies all over the place…Food seemed like it had been sitting out there (with flies buzzing close by…) for ages…and $60-70 later (with just 2 adults + 1 kid) just didn’t seem worth it…The New Lynn one is definitely better, I think…
We first started going to Gengys in Henderson about 4 years ago and it was great then. However, we went back recently about a month ago and the place has really gone downhill unfortunately.
When you walk in, don’t sit on the right hand side of the place because the window sills there were covered in dead flies. There were also flies flying around that area too.
Flies around uncooked meat in the open = not a good idea!
We found a dead fly in one of the meat buckets at the buffet table (where you go to get your food). We told the waitress about it. Not only did she try to grab it right in front of us (rather than removing the whole bucket of meat where the dead fly was), she also failed in picking it up after 3 gos and during the attempts, moved the dead fly around the meat as well! Then she took the tongs away to wash it and put it up into the meat!
The window sill next to the area where you go to get the fries, spaghetti etc also had dead flies.
The toilet facilities were tired and old.
Hats off to the cooks though as they did a good job cooking.
I had my 21st here lol. It was okay i guess. Only problem i had was they didnt have enough chips. Kept on bugging the waitress to get some fries.. but had to wait like half an hour for it.. and when they put out fries people would rush and take it all .. had to eat my food like that. didnt have time to have dessert lol. I also didnt like how untidy it was (where you cook the food). Very messy and ugly. Maybe you guys should hire someone to keep on cleaning it and sweeping the floor. very unprofesh to my liking! but thanks for the service and food. gonna try new lynn nek time. Best genghys ive been to is in Manukau :)
Was there for two birthdays (same day) thought the birthday deal was a complete rip off having 3 people pay $28.95 in order for the birthday person to eat for $1! (which meant because it was a birthday for two 6 people had to pay $28.95!) if i had known this before booking i wouldn’t have booked at all! I’d have to say the Genghis Khan franchises are way better than Gengys!! The food was okay although my first meal was over cooked and tasted a little burnt, not satisfying! the area where all the oils and sauces are was so disgusting, i mean i know people spill stuff etc but the staff could at least wipe it down now and again. There aren’t enough fresh vegetables the beans and the mixed stir fry veges are obviously from a frozen bag having been soaked in water would be nice to have some broccoli and cauliflower. The salads weren’t that bad and the bread rolls didn’t taste that fresh. The best thing about it i guess were the pancakes and ice creams and the fact that you could swim in the pool. This was probably my first and last time booking here.
Food is not Halal;
They cook meat on the same pan where they cook pork.
The person who eat Halal food only, Please never go.
As a place it is very crowded and a good place. But very disappointed to see that they have written Halal food in front of the counter and they are cooking meat and port together on the same pan.
I doubt, if they really have Halal meat.
Thanks
Just got back from this place, food wise, to me kinda standard, but you can mix and match the meats, veges and sauces anyway, make sure you mix the right taste. I am not a fan of ready to eat foods there. Why 4 stars? because I found the staff were lovely. They try to work fast and do their best and still maintain their welcome smile.
I have always enjoyed Gengy’s when going just a few people – the food is great – but everytime I have gone in a large group for a birthday or similar, they are so rude and always insist that not everyone had paid and they try and get the last person to pay for extra people, even when you know and have checked everyone had paid. Last time it literally got to the point of a yelling match with the extremely rude manager. We were so furious and humiliated after giving them such good business. Because of this we will never go back to this one. Very disappointed in the terrible customer service. They must train the staff to extort from large groups. Be very careful.
Been here a few times with my hubby and children, and it is good value for money… but I do not like: 1) the lack of parking, 2) the disgusting coffee, 3) the lack of choice of desserts… and, on that note, 4) the disgustingly dirty scoops for the ice-cream that are sat in tubs of very yucky, unclean water that looks like it’s changed once a year. Apart from that, the rest of the food and the service is spot on… so if you walk to the place and don’t want a dessert, the place is fine.
The first time I went to Gengys, I was immediately smitten with the relaxed atmosphere. I was also pleasantly surprised you could choose what you wanted to eat from the normal beef, lamb and chicken to prawns and squid. They also have sauce menus that you can mix and match according to taste and spiciness.
Also surprising was the fact that the cooks are cooking several meals at once which you have to wait in line for and they seem to ‘know’ which is your meal. But do keep an eye on where they place your food as once they gave the food to the wrong person. I’ve only seen this happen once in the several times I’ve been there.
Waiters/Waitresses are so busy that sometimes they just don’t have the time to personally serve you, so rather than wait for them to come and get you a drink, get up and go to the bar.
During summer, the guests of the restaurant may use the swimming pool and you can watch the kids swimming from inside the restaurant or take your meal outside by the pool. It is good value for money and for children you pay $1 per year of their age. ( I can’t remember what age this goes up to).
Gengys caters for small and large groups although you might want to book in advance if your looking at taking a large group. There is a separate function room to celebrate weddings, birthdays etc.
The only ‘problem’ I have with Gengys is the Car parking. It is very popular as mentioned before and therefore parking space is at a premium not to mention very narrow so be careful when reversing out etc.
Hi :)
Well I loved the place, the food the atmosphere. It was so friendly when my family & I went there. We took our children which aged from 1yr to 13yrs, all up there were about 16 of us. We weren’t looked down on for the loud laughter either. My boys loved the food as they chose what they wanted to eat and took it to the kind chefs that were awaiting to cook it for us. My niece loves the place so much that she wants to go there for her 5th birthday which is coming up soon and we’re all going again and the majority of us live in Kaitaia (1hr 45mins south of Cape Reinga). So Gengy’s Henderson….. look out we’re coming back real soon!!!! ;)
Went to the one in Dalma Court,(do not mistake it for Genghis Khan restaurant in New Lynn which I found brilliant) for my boyfriend’s birthday, it was horrendous. He ordered a drink and a insect that resembled a flea was floating round in the glass. There were scraps of bread rolls in the greenery arrangements inside the restaurant, not to mention all over the floor (obviously from previous guests) but had not been cleaned up.
The food, including the meats were not kept cool, in fact they had pedestal fans blowing on the food/meat to try and keep the flies off it, which didn’t really do the job all that well as I found sand flies in my broccoli. I’m amazed that we actually continued to eat there after witnessing this and I only ate vegetables as I was quite concerned about getting ill. Granted it was the middle of summer and very hot, but to have no refrigeration and the place was swarming with flies, as a result, I will NEVER eat there again.
My family and I visited Gengy’s Henderson just last week and everything was perfect! We enjoyed the new food which was not available last time including; fries, sushi and Japanese pancakes, the chefs did a fantastic job along side the young smiley waiter Carl. It was a good celebration for my son’s 11th birthday. Gengy’s made the day end great. Thank-you.
At Gengy’s you grab a bowl or two, and help yourself from a selection of raw meats and vegetables and the chef cooks it to your liking. You can add all manner of spices and sauces before or after cookings and there are salads on the side too.
You can go back and try as many combinations as you please.
Dessert pancakes are made fresh while you wait and you add ice creams and sauces.
If you’re feeling really brave, take your togs and have a swim in the lovely outdoor pool but be prepared, everyone will watch you :-)
this was my second time at this particular Gengys and I must say that it seemed to me the quality of the food had considerably dropped since my last visit although We were served by a very friendly waitress/waiter on the night the chips were soggy & looked like the MacDonald’s fries but left out until the next day..didn’t taste too great i stayed away from most of the selections of meats and only kept to what looked freshest..soup tasted like it had come out of a can but worse…some improvements on all of the above and maybe you’ll get a thumbs up from me..thats if i choose to ever come back…
Great place for hungry people! Liked the atmosphere best compared to all the other Gengy’s.
Cool place for a party too.
The food- well, you mix your own food so no complaints there!
