We’re well established now as one of Wellington’s best independent cafes which lies at the heart of the city in the stylish Chews Lane precinct. Gotham is a haven from our city’s ever changing wintry elements and in summer – when the large bi-fold doors swing open; a place to relax and enjoy the day.

During the week Gotham offers funky booths for that private meeting or a couple of large sofas for a more relaxed get-together; it’s a given that you’re busy and need to get back to the office, so service is fast, friendly and the food is fantastic.

Coffee and freshly cooked home-style food is what Gotham is about; we offer the best organic Havana blend, organic milk and lots of local produce. From August 2009, we will be extending our hours to include café style meals. So come and enjoy great food and a glass of your favourite wine or beer in a low-key atmosphere, days as usual, evenings Wednesday through to Fridays inclusive. Gotham is also an ideal venue for corporate events, product launches, party or that special event. With lots of catering options available, we will make your function memorable.

We went to Gotham Cafe on Saturday 15 October and there were 6 adults and 4 children. We ordered 2 bowls of fries and some drinks, one adult ordered her meal and asked for a has brown. When the meal came out no hash brown and when asked where it was the person said she would order it now. During that time the rest of us orderded and we waited nearly 30 mins and then asked when our meals would be coming out – to our disgust we were told the waitress NEVER PUT OUR ORDER THROUGH. We won’t be going back there at all. Bad service and they made us pay for the stuff we had even though they stuffed up BIG TIME.

Gotham’s pretty lucky in the fact that the willis street/ lambton quay area is somewhat lacking in the funky cafe department in comparison to the cuba street area.

I can’t help but wonder, would Gotham still get such raving reviews (I’m conveniently ignoring the few less raving reviews)if it was located on cuba street where it would be less original?

Anyhow, in saying that, it’s a rather good cafe for a bite to eat and/or coffee. I’ve been there a few times, but most recently, I visited today for lunch.
A friend and I shared the New York style grilled cheese sandwich. The sandwich on its on is $7… which is rather pricey for some bread and cheese. Each filling after the cheese is then extra, for example, ham is $3.50, gherkins are $1 and sauces and mustard etc are $1. This can turn it into a pretty expensive cheese toastie. This can also turn it into a bloody delicious cheese toastie.

It was large, crispy, filling.. delicious. We shared the sandwich and a “half” serving of fries (which was huge). The meal was big enough to fill us both, which says alot about their generous portions.

The service was good, although we had about 3 different waiters serving us while we were there. They had also run out of the sisters ridge sav, but came up with a suitable alternative for me. They were generally friendly and welcoming.

Overall, a good cafe, especially as there isn’t a whole lot in the area. I would recommend for a mid week lunch.

Cheers!

Expensive: $19 for two poached eggs, 2 pieces of bacon and 2 tiny, greasy sausages (that were deepfried, one with cheese in it). No reduction for leaving out the toast, which was two massive slices on my companion’s plate.

Hard to find anything positive to say after that disappointment.

Pretty cool place seating wise, menu kind of scribbled on the board could take some more care with that since the surroundings has had a bit of effort ,chef could also dress like one instead of boardies and tshirt ,coffee good but slow and I mean really slow, food good but also really slow

This was my first time to Gotham and I have to say I was unimpressed, Firstly the menu is very small and when I asked the waiter for an opinion on one of the dishes it was described as “fun” In my opinion this is not a good way to describe food as everyone’s connotation of fun is quite different. I went for the soup of the day which was served luke warm and lumpy, the toast was good but served with no butter to accompany it. The side order of chips my friend bought were hot though, but how hard is precooked chips to prepare?

Gotham is my favourite place to enjoy a relaxed dinner.
The dinner menu and wine list are both have plenty of quality options.
Meals are served promptly, good sized portions and colourful presentation, and the food is delicious! The fries are possibly the best ever! I have also really enjoyed the chicken and the steak.
The atmosphere is upbeat yet comfortable and the staff are attentive, friendly and good for a laugh.

Thankfully we came upon Gotham after I had suggested to my wife that there weren’t any cafes in the area. Our experience began with a most pleasant welcome from the table d’hote with a wine recommendation. The Domain Road Riesling with the salmon dish I chose was a great combination. My wife selected the Yarra Valley Cabernet Sauvignon to accompany her most enjoyable rib-eye steak. All in all our restaurant visit was one to be be long remembered for the best of reasons. We now know that there is this very special eating place in Wellington Central.

Gotham has a great reputation and I have to agree with all that’s been said. It’s always a pleasure to come across staff who enjoy what they do and each other’s company; their humour at the till certainly put a smile on patrons’ faces. The coffee (Havana) is good and strong and there is a wide selection of counter food available, even later in the afternoon. I enjoyed a lemon and poppyseed muffin with my latte. The decor is funky and the selection of 70s and 80s rock and disco music playing makes Gotham a real pick-me-up spot.

Outstanding coffee matched by the service.
Good place to take older (8 years up) children, they “get” the dark atmosphere as something different without it being too over the top.
Gotham has become the “special treat” place in Wellingtons CBD for our family outings.

Great cafe which provides a funky, classy environment, great food at very resonable prices and a team of very friendly staff :)

After going there once, I promptly made it my ‘usual’ place for lunch and eat there at least once a week.

I highly recommend the gotham fries…amazing!
