We’re well established now as one of Wellington’s best independent cafes which lies at the heart of the city in the stylish Chews Lane precinct. Gotham is a haven from our city’s ever changing wintry elements and in summer – when the large bi-fold doors swing open; a place to relax and enjoy the day.
During the week Gotham offers funky booths for that private meeting or a couple of large sofas for a more relaxed get-together; it’s a given that you’re busy and need to get back to the office, so service is fast, friendly and the food is fantastic.
Coffee and freshly cooked home-style food is what Gotham is about; we offer the best organic Havana blend, organic milk and lots of local produce. From August 2009, we will be extending our hours to include café style meals. So come and enjoy great food and a glass of your favourite wine or beer in a low-key atmosphere, days as usual, evenings Wednesday through to Fridays inclusive. Gotham is also an ideal venue for corporate events, product launches, party or that special event. With lots of catering options available, we will make your function memorable.

I can’t help but wonder, would Gotham still get such raving reviews (I’m conveniently ignoring the few less raving reviews)if it was located on cuba street where it would be less original?
Anyhow, in saying that, it’s a rather good cafe for a bite to eat and/or coffee. I’ve been there a few times, but most recently, I visited today for lunch.
A friend and I shared the New York style grilled cheese sandwich. The sandwich on its on is $7… which is rather pricey for some bread and cheese. Each filling after the cheese is then extra, for example, ham is $3.50, gherkins are $1 and sauces and mustard etc are $1. This can turn it into a pretty expensive cheese toastie. This can also turn it into a bloody delicious cheese toastie.
It was large, crispy, filling.. delicious. We shared the sandwich and a “half” serving of fries (which was huge). The meal was big enough to fill us both, which says alot about their generous portions.
The service was good, although we had about 3 different waiters serving us while we were there. They had also run out of the sisters ridge sav, but came up with a suitable alternative for me. They were generally friendly and welcoming.
Overall, a good cafe, especially as there isn’t a whole lot in the area. I would recommend for a mid week lunch.
Cheers!

Hard to find anything positive to say after that disappointment.

The dinner menu and wine list are both have plenty of quality options.
Meals are served promptly, good sized portions and colourful presentation, and the food is delicious! The fries are possibly the best ever! I have also really enjoyed the chicken and the steak.
The atmosphere is upbeat yet comfortable and the staff are attentive, friendly and good for a laugh.

Good place to take older (8 years up) children, they “get” the dark atmosphere as something different without it being too over the top.
Gotham has become the “special treat” place in Wellingtons CBD for our family outings.

After going there once, I promptly made it my ‘usual’ place for lunch and eat there at least once a week.
I highly recommend the gotham fries…amazing!
