I’m from the uk and love great curry. I have been hugely disappointed with the standard of curry houses in New Zealand, it is what I miss about home the most. Great India is the only Indian restaurant in Wellington I would recommend, the food is delicious and authentic. I am hugely surprised by some of the poor reviews on here, if you love great Indian food you’ll enjoy this place.

I’ve been here 2 or 3 times and each time the experience was the same. Different waiters, confused about our orders, annoying ‘suggestive’ selling and the prices not matching the taste.
I like to give places a chance as everyone has an off day but 3 strikes and yr out.
Better food, service & prices up in Cuba!
Goodbye Great India.

I’ve been to this restaurant a number of times and never been disappointed. They have an extensive menu with lots of dishes you will never have never have tried before and they are all amazing. The service is top class. A+.

Too expensive for curry, we were in a large group 20-25, but it took 2.5 hours to get food(10.30pm at night) which is a bit substandard
The hot towels were a bit of a wnk factor too…
Overall food was average, there are much better indian places round Wellington

I went to Great India for dinner and was not too impressed to be honest.
Same things as others have mentioned, different waiters, who did not seem to be consistent, they kept trying to up sell us, which I never like. We ordered a diet coke and a regular and they were not sure which was which.
The menu did not have enough about the items. On the curry I chose it said it was ‘chef’s sauce’. A bit more description would have led to me choosing something else. The vegetables also tasted like they had been frozen, it sure wasn’t fresh. The curry was just a bit bland, and it wasn’t great. The Naan wasn’t generous and was nothing special.
The biggest shock was the bill. BEWARE. $50 for two, including a coke each. Rip-off. The rice was $7 for both of us and came in a tiny bowl. I never like getting shared rice, as I think you get less, and there wasn’t enough for us. I couldn’t believe it. They charged $18.50 for a butter chicken then $3.50 for the rice, someone is making a steal off this business as hardly anyone gets curry without rice.
All in all, disappointing. You can get cheaper & better up Cuba.

Great food! you may not have the best expirience in terms of service if you go during a rush time…they are short on space and stafffood
In my xexpirience better to visit for lunch on weekdays…
also they do not take reservations..I have tried a couple of times and been VERY politely refused
heck! I keep trying

Good menu and tasty food, the service wasn’t great, we got served by 3 different waiters but i think they were just a bit short staffed that night.
Would definitely grab a take-away from there.

My experience with Great India was not very good.
First I was informed I couldn’t use my entertainment card for takeaways, which is fine, but I think that should be stated in the entertainment book somewhere or on the website. The website did tell me I wasn’t able to use it at lunch but there was no mention of takeaways.
I ordered two vegetarian dishes. The names are so vague that I ordered two with exactly the same sauce. The channa masala has no mention of what kind of sauce it is only saying chickpeas and potatoes and the vegetable curry is vegetables in a curry sauce. They were all equally vague with sauce options described as ‘gravy’, ‘special sauce’ or ‘cooked in spices’. I suppose that should have been a sign that it wasn’t going to be great.
Finally i ordered both medium and they were very mild.
Overall a disappointing meal and I will probably not go back.

Great meal – spice just right and a proper vindaloo with the lamb tender – will return
In my opinion, Great India is one of the better Indian places in the capital. I’ve stopped by with the girlfriend a couple of times and caught their monday 2 for 1 special, and was pleasantly impressed with quality of their curry. Very quiet on Mondays, it’s a nice, relaxing atmosphere, and the service is professional. The naan bread here is delicious too, and the menu features quality renditions of curry staples like creamy Kormas and the like. Worth checking out.

Great India is in my opinion one of the two best Indian restaurants in Wellington (the other being Indus on Tinakori Road).
This longstanding and award winning restaurant is perhaps best known for its particularly good service and attentive Maitre D’ Rakesh. However, with a strong ‘flavour’ of the English Midlands, they also have a extensive menu with a great range of starters and main courses; my particular favourites are the Seekh Kebab, Chicken Tikka, Chicken Jalferzi and the Murgh Biryani although there are plenty of other dishes for the more adventurous (including squid and venison) as well as vegetarians; they also have a particularly good range of Indian beers and their Bombay Gins are to die for. Equally suitable for singles, couples and business dinners, their large round tables are also great for group nights out.
Is it expensive? No but as ever it depends on what exactly you’re comparing it with and whether you object to paying for rice; it’s probably the lowest cost restaurant that I go to and their $10 lunch must be the best value offering in the city.
The refurbished bathrooms are also a great improvement.

the food and service are great, but the additional costs are too high

It was a Friday night and we decided to have a late night curry after watching the Phoenix disappointingly draw their home game at the cake-tin, we selected the Great India as our destination for dinner as we knew they’d welcome some new customers at 9:45pm. After the obligatory question they ask every time of whether we wanted their overpriced pompadoms and dips, we selected two entrees — Seekh Kebab and Chicken Tikka. The kebab was a small serving in my opinion. The mint yoghurt that accompanied them that was made with dried mint rather than fresh. We had a couple of Kingfisher Strongs, again charged the highest price in town at $15 a bottle. For the main course we had Chicken Jalfrezi, Methi Gosht (lamb pieces cooked with fenugreek leaves), Gehtu Masala (lamb in a tandoori masala sauce) and Murgh Chuttri (chicken cooked with capsicum and mushrooms). All were bahut acha (very good). The Jalfrezi was the hottest and the heat was just right. The Gehtu Masala was another great find — the lamb was tender and the sauce exquisite. I appreciated that all the sauces were distinctly different, when sometimes it seems like the restaurants around town are using the same sauce base across a range of dishes. The breads were good, and we even went crazy and spent the $7.50 for a Pershwari Naan – which is a large sized serving that justifies the equally large price tag. The plain steamed rice, at $3.50 per serve, is a joke. We got one bowl and shared it around the four of us. We were very satisfied at the end of the meal, having ordered just the right amount of food, with no leftovers. As a bonus we used the Entertainment Card and got a $25 discount off the meal. The environment was good. We had the place to ourselves for the last half of the meal, but didn’t feel rushed. While we completed our meal the two cooks left, so we passed on our gratitude to them for the tasty late night dinner they had prepared for us. The maitre d’ was a good chap too, but he wasn’t the usual one (Rakesh) that runs the show. Marking their rating down was the inevitable additional costs that they try to incorporate in the bill, such as rice at $3.50 a bowl and the expensive pompadum+dips question that still haunts me from when I was financially burnt the last time I was naive enough to have them.
This is one restaurant that does not compromise on taste. It is the closest to the true taste of Indian food that I have found so far in Wellington. Excellent quantity of servings and the atmosphere is great. Service is generally prompt and always cordial. A great place to eat.

I had a lovely meal here and the lunch time take away is spot on too, good service and excellent food.
A good all-round meal. Lovely food with great service. Quite costly for an Indian restaurant (having to pay $3.50 for each serving of rice, which doesn’t come with the meal), so the 25% discount that the Entertainment Book offers is appreciated.
