The doors opened quietly at the end of May to a spacious, rustic Ale House with woolpress barleaners, macrocarpa slab furniture and ample seating for diners. Specialising in a range of hand-crafted brews from local New Zealand microbreweries like Crouchers, Mikes Organic, Harringtons and Mata with more to come.

Awesome and affordable menu with an extensive variety and an emphasis on good ole Kiwi cuisine. Great children’s meals and desserts, and a great play area to entertain the little ones.
Open for breakfast, cabinet food, lunches, dinners and private functions. Function Room by arrangement.

Tried this on GrabOne deal.

Me: What is the fish of the day please?
Waiter: Tarakihi
Me: How is it cooked?
Waiter: In the oven

Interesting start. As the above didn’t give me much information, I ordered the steak, rare, but unfortunately couldn’t eat it as it was still moo’ing (raw).

On the positive, as an apology the waiter gave us a free beer and a free wine.

Perfectly good destination for a beer and chips :) Paul’s burger was ‘average’.

Disappointed. I have tried this place twice now and I had a burger and chips, burger was not good at all. No taste at all and messy to eat. Second time I had the fish and chips; fish (not fresh and smelly) almost well over cooked batter had gone dark brown. I found the barman to be rude, smelly and the waitress not friendly at all. Great place and great idea, pity they cannot cook and a bit of customer service goes a long way. Nothing great here!!!. I won’t be going back that’s for sure!!!

We are disappointed that the standard was not to your liking and so have reviewed the Burger Meal in order to improve it. I have posted a photo of the new Ale House Big Burger which is now made with freshly baked buns, a 300gm prime beef pattie, cheese,…    More »

We came here on Friday night as it looked like a great place..our waitress was new so didn’t really know too much about the specials etc, but her lovely personality made up for that. We had the ciabatta for our starter which I wasn’t too impressed with..just 2 very small pieces of bread covered in thick green pesto which was a bit much. My husband ordered the steak which looked nice but was a little bit on the chewy side, I had the manuka smoked chicken sald which was very nice aside from the lashings of dressing which spoiled it a bit, Would come back here again.

The decor of the establishment was very nice, we came with young children and there was a very good play area.

Unfortunately there ended the good experience at the not so great kiwi ale house.

One meal for one of the children was completely missed, a pasta dish arrived when a vegetarian pizza was ordered, the roast vegetable salad was not eaten as it was below standard.

The fish bites, chunky fries and grilled ciabatta bread were pleasant and the pizza (when it arrived) was well presented and tasty. The children’s burger was poor quality.

We should have been alerted by the empty restaurant on a Saturday night.

The restaurant was clean and tidy though the bathrooms were not.

Not a venue I will be giving a second chance in future.

Fabulous place for lunch or dinner! Visited Rotorua earlier this week and was attracted by their blackboard menu. Enjoyed the seafood tricolour fettuccine and then took a group back. Such a varied menu there is something for everyone ranging from seafood, pizza, vegetarian and steaks! Entrées and desert were yummy too. Prices are amazing with 7 people dinning for $200.00.

This is the second weekend in a row I have been in Rotorua, and enjoyed dinner at the Kiwi Alehouse. Good service, good food at a good price. Nothing too flash, but relaxed and casual. Definately will be returning next time I am in Rotorua!

Had a meal with a small group of friends the other night. Tasted that Crouchers pils for the first time – and a few other different ales. Good food, good beer, good service, what more can I say. Will be heading back again soon

Took the family to the Gt Kiwi Ale House. Loved the food – it was well priced, good sized portions, couldn’t wish for better. The kids loved the kiddie corner with all the toys and chalk board so we could enjoy dinner while they played! If you like good beer and good food, this is the hit place in Rotorua!

If you like the sound of over-priced, feeble food, unprofessional, unhelpful, bad mannered waitresses or waiting an hour for your food when the restaurant is not even half full, the Great Kiwi Ale house is for you! Not impressed.
