Always F.A.B. Virgil.
Visited with my elderly mother and its never a bother for the staff to accommodate whatever we need.
Nice and quiet, off the beaten track.
Lovely staff, food and service. Staff go out of there way. Recommend the giner gems – big portions – but always a doggie bag for supper.
Pot of tea was an experience – ’til I realised you brew your own. Silly me.
A fan.
Thanks GKE team.

Happy Tweets
- Open sandwiches made as you like it, try with the teza chilled tea range.
- Special board (seen below) is the funkiest in Hawke’s Bay so far.
- This is a place designed so you enjoy both the food AND the music. Turntables and live music are regular Thursday + Friday events.

Group of 9 for family birthday lunch attended 1.00 on a Friday. Really bad dining experience in my opinion. We all had to wait over 30 minutes to receive our meals once we had ordered. Range offered was a basic brunch type menu with minimal choices from the display cabinet. In my opinion the menu options offered would not normally take that long to have served out at the same time for our order of only 9 meals. Also overhearing another customers lunch order being placed, the cafe attendant pointed out to him the menu board was out-of-date. Cafe was not busy, observed several other customers being served meals before our table. Too bad if you were a tourist wanting to grab a quick lunch/brunch and having to wait an hour for a meal, or if you were a worker and only had an hour for your meal break. Service very poor. Cafe staff were not overly concerned when approached with complaints of timeliness. However when we complained we were offered a choice of slice or another drink.

GKE is great. The food is fresh and varied, there’s a small menu on the counter, a board for sandwiches and rolls, and a large chiller cabinet with snacks, salads, light meals and to die for pastries and tarts.

The coffee is superb and although they don’t do iced coffee, their espresso milkshake is to die for and almost a meal in itself.

Until recently my only gripe was the lack of seats, but they’ve now put tables in the sideway too.

The staff are always cheerful and friendly, especially the young lady in the headscarf behind the till.

The evening menu is small, maybe five main dishes, but the same good quality and service.
