Gumdiggers Restaurant, exudes an historic ambience, awash with oiled Kauri panels set-off by dark green walls lined with photographs of old gum digging days in Birkenhead.

Your Chef and host, James Archibald, founded the restaurant back in 1977.
Gumdiggers’ popularity has persisted over the decades due to the team’s down to earth attitude and commitment to offering value for money. Gumdiggers has a style that engenders a strong following of repeat customers.

The historic premises (originally a 19th century drapers’ shop) are maintained in meticulous condition.

Gumdiggers caters for a la carte dining and is also host to many weddings and special functions. For private functions such as this, the team at Gumdiggers will illuminate the restaurant for you with their traditional oil lanterns.

My friend and I dined here recently, and it was fantastic. I have not been to Gumdiggers in approx 15 years and it still has the same fantastic food and prices. The staff were lovely and the Chef came out and talked to people and even walked a 90yr old out to his taxi and placed him inside it. Just great service! The food was great and plenty. I had the beef tenderloin which was accompanied by baked potato, broccoli with hollandaise sauce and deep fried cauliflower which is their speciality. You only get a small sampling of the deep fried cauliflower, so I would suggest ordering it as a side as it was amazing!! My friend had the pork which she said tasted divine. We had deserts which were beautifully presented. Apparently now it is not so hard to book and get in, so we will definitely go back again soon.

We visited Gumdiggers on Friday night and had a lovely evening. The staff were efficient and helpful, the food beautifully cooked and there was plenty of it. We enjoyed three courses and including some 70′s style entrees. Just lovely. We will definitely return for more of this “great value for money” restaurant. It is local for us too so not far to drive.

We did something a little different recently and visited a restaurant we had not been to since the late 1980′s. Gumdiggers on Hinemoa in Birkenhead is like a time capsule which appears to have created an oasis of calm from the frenetic world in which we all now live.

We didn’t know what to expect but were welcomed with big smiles and menu filled with many classics – I enjoyed the chicken followed by soft, rich chocolate mousse which came in a glass with a cherry on top – talk about blast from the past.

We were laughing so much – They didn’t mind us having so much fun in the least. A great night out – highly recommended

We recently dined at Gumdiggers with a group and had a great night out. It’s seven years since we were there last and the place hasn’t changed a bit. It still offers value for money and excellent service. The meals were tasty, the vegetables generous and the choice fantastic. The prices were much lower than many other restaurants we have recently eaten at, and the food generally much better. We will be back soon to try out more of the delicious food. We are lucky to have such a good all round restaurant as a local.

Celebrated my birthday with friends recently. A very relaxing environment, enjoyable high quality food and gentle music you can talk along with. A good change from noisy environments.
