The food and atmosphere was okay, but the service was sub-standard. We were asked by one of the staff to talk to another person because he was too busy. (To be fair the restaurant was indeed very busy.) We heard the same person saying “oh s**t” when he was asked again to come and serve us.

Another staffer slammed one of the dishes on our table. To add shame to injury both of us found hair in our dishes.

I don’t think I want to come back to the restaurant any more after tonight’s experience, at least not while it’s so busy!

I’ve been to this branch of Hansan 3 times. Although the first visit was pleasant enough, each time after that has been worse. In my most recent visit, when the food finally arrived, the carrots in the dish I ordered were more like wood, flavourless and fibrous. The beef was rather tough. Won’t be back.

I don’t really see this as a Vietnamese restaurant. Yes, they do serve all the traditional dishes but the flavours are completely untraditional (it leans more on the chinese side in terms of taste) – NB I’m not saying that the food here is bad.

You don’t get much noodles with the soups, and one time the soup was “warm” and noodles a bit undercooked – but I put that down to the fact that they were busy. The vermicelli with springrolls was bland becuase the fish sauce mixture was too watered down. The vietnamese pancake (ban xeo) is large in size but that is all that is good about it. The filling lacks originality and flavour.

With that said the location is good, and environment is pleasant. Another alternative if you are wanting to taste more authentic vietnamese dishes is ‘Try it out’ in Otahuhu or ‘Vietnamese Gourmet’ on East Tamaki Rd in Papatoetoe (these places are cheap and yum but not as “exclusive” as hansan is – the do instead pack the flavour)

The food was delicious and with very large portions. We (my friend and I) ordered the chicken satay and pork summer rolls as starters. These came out super quick and were SO tasty. By recommendation from the server we also got the crispy lemongrass chick on vermicelli (?) and the combination beef soup with egg noodles. Would DEFINITELY recommend the chicken. The beef soup was nice but not something I’d try again. Portions of mains were so large we couldn’t finish them!
Food is really well priced as well. We ordered the above and a bottle of Villa Maria riesling and the total was around $60.

One negative thing though, the sticky floors!! What the!!

Great food for the price but don’t expect 5 star service.

Good environment as the setting in the restaurant was quite cosy. The service was very good and accommodating but the food was quite average though very generous with the portion size for mains. Can get a very filling meal for $9.50 and still have leftovers.

Went last night finally after wanting to go for a while. The food is fast and cheap. The place is clean and modern. Filled up fast. Some dishes seem better than others but I had the grilled lemongrass chicken and a soup of rice noodles – was filling, clean tasting and very enjoyable. Plus the place is BYO too. Would recommend.

Too much hype – nice dining ambience (modern and cosy) but the food is nothing to shout about. Although reasonably priced, I felt that the food lacked on taste. It didn’t have that ‘fresh’ nor ‘rich’ taste that Vietnamese food prides itself on. For example, our beef noodle soup was pretty bland, while the Vietnamese pancake (priced at $16) was pretty abysmal in quantity and quality. I’ve seen and tasted better at the Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne…
I wonder if the owners are pure Vietnamese, as the waiting staff were mainly Chinese (we’ve been warned by friends that some Vietnamese restaurants in Auckland may not be authentic enough).
Surprisingly, the place was packed – so I’m wondering if it’s the dining ambience that’s mainly pulling people in (because the food is only average or slightly below par!).

Hansan always looked packed… Went there last night with a friend for dinner. Was really disappointed. I’ve been to Vietnam & the food at Hansan was nothing like Vietnamese cuisine.
There were absolutely NO vegetarian options on the menu, so I had to ask the waiter for noodle soup. The so called Pho noodles were tasteless and bland. Hardly any veg and I ended up adding loads of chili to give it a bit of flavour… Although my friend kind of enjoyed her fried pork and rice noodles… Wouldn’t bother going there again!

I went to Hansan last Saturday for lunch with Mum and Dad. The location is convenient and the restaurant is family friendly. I am not familiar with Vietnamese food so I find their menu featuring English, Chinese and a photo for every dish extremely helpful. Also, each dish is labeled by a code that makes it easy to place an order. The mains average around $9 to $11 each. The food was fine, just not memorable. I am happy to eat at Hansan again although I wouldn’t be disappointed if I don’t, and it would be nice if they get rid of the sticky floor.
