Jonny Schwass provides classic European dining in a fully restored 1899 Victorian Villa: Harlequin Public House is open from mid June 2013.

Philosophy:

“It is my firm belief that the focus should be on the quality of the raw component of any dish. As a chef my responsibility is to showcase stellar produce and use a healthy dose of restraint in how we prepare a dish. It is not unlike wine maker’s coaxing subtle flavours from a grape, which has been passed to them from the vineyard. In the kitchen we have a duty to uphold the veracity of the ingredient handed to us by our growers and farmers.

One of the best meals of my life I had at Restaurant Schwass. Simple, tasty, well cooked. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Absolutely out of this world. The best restaurant in Christchurch.

An exceptional restaurant, no doubt the best place in Christchurch, and definitely up there with the best in New Zealand for sure. Service was faultless and the food was just outstanding. A group of five of us tried everything on the menu as we just passed the plates around. Absolute stand outs (if i had to pick two each) were the steak tartare and mushroom risotto (entrees), the pig and duck (mains), potato puree and asparagus (sides) and white chocolate brulee and apple tart (desserts). Wonderful wines and all in all a fabulous evening, we couldn’t fault a thing. Congratulations Restaurant Schwass, you’re a rare find.

If you are looking for an exceptionally delicious, innovative and special taste experience go to Restaurant Schwass. My husband I had the 5 course Taste menu last night with the matching wines and thoroughly enjoyed each part. I was especially taken with the Jerusalem Artichoke Soup which was so scrumptious it alone was worth the visit! The servcie was also great – unobtrusive yet attentive. Well done to all at Restuarant Schwass- we will be back – very soon!

Wow!!!
I just had a great dinner at Restaurant Schwass the other day with a bunch of friends celebrating a birthday. We are now all massive fans of this place and can put that down to this one evening.
Of what I understand, Jonny is a bit of a legend and watching him cook (they have an open kitchen) I soon understood why. The cleanest kitchen I have ever seen and it was a very busy night indeed.
All the food held a quality in flavours I cannot recall having for a long time. The service was very knowledgeable, smooth & eclectic, and nothing was said though we were probably a little (a lot)too loud.
I could not fault anything and could only wish more restaurants in this price category would hold the same quality!!

As a new Christchurch local I was amazed by the quality of food and winelist at this restaurant. It rivals any international high class establishment with a tenth of the price. My new favourite and will recommend to everyone.

In a word, amazing. The food is something that I’ve never experienced in Christchurch before. For entree, soup was chosen, and it was presented with style – poured at the table even! The lamb main with labne was cooked to perfection and then to follow was the best chocolate soft centred pudding I’ve ever had. The service was faultless – informative and unobtrusive. A warm and lovely atmosphere due to the packed dining rooms all having a sensational and melting moment with their dining companions. I’ve already re-booked for next week!
