I bought some coupons from groupies for $240 worth of food. The lady that served us did not under stand English to well and we didn’t get what we ordered. There were six of us they only bought four mains that that consisted of rice and a few slices of chicken not a vegetable in sight also ordered mussels as a main and that’s all there was nothing else.My bill came to $179.00 and I had coupons for $240 I think that the total cost of food with all that rice would have been about $4 per dish.Never again would I go there

The food is among the best of any dim sum available in New Zealand and tastes very authentic. I have never had a bad meal here in over 50 visits. Service can be a little slow sometimes when busy but this is a common occurrence at most yum char restaurants and is why I rate them 4 stars.

Wow another bad experience. We had yum char here which was good. However, on Friday night in anticipation of watching the Royal Wedding I headed here for some takeout. I was surprised to see that the prices had increased when I asked for the takeway menu. I ordered pork and chicken and rushed home. This was very bland, untasty chinese food. I can cook better then this. There was not even any basic seasoning like salt and pepper. Completely let down espcially after I paid $30 for two mains. Next time I will be going to the noodle place down the road or my cheaper and cheeful chinese. Not Recommended- the food has no taste and if you can cook chinese you can probably do better at home. I recommend the Dragon Takeaways in Sandringham on Sandringham Road or The Great Tong on the cnr or Manukau and Greenlane for good and cheaper chinese.

The dim sim here is as good as it gets. I’m Chinese and have tried pretty much all the yum cha serving restaurants in the Auckland Central region, and this by far has to be the top. Service was okay. From observation, I could tell the staff were not great at English, and I think that is why foreigner’s feel like they’re not getting great service. I spoke Chinese to the staff so everything was fine. If you feel like a Chinese restaurant that’s more ‘catered’ for Westerners, try Grand Harbor instead, though I don’t find the food as authentic there.

The food is fantastic, but like others have said, the very poor service lets them down.

The food was below average and the service was terrible.
We had to keep asking for thing like green tea, the complimentry soup. Also everybody in other tables keep getting served first even if they arrives after us.
What made us really angry was the lady who we paid to was rude

Non-existent service! Very average dim sum. We wanted plain congee (which comes with a savoury Chinese donut-type thing). We were told that it was too early and they don’t have any. So ok, we ask how much it would cost minus the donut-thing. Answer: the same. WHAT?

Overall, they just don’t know how to run a business (and just to clear things up with some people – no, restaurants in Hong Kong don’t run like this either…).

I have dined at Hees Garden about half a a dozen times over the last 10 years and every time went there with the hope that the service would be better then the time before. The food has always been good but the service has been really substandard. The management has to realise that this is not Hong Kong and we don’t expect to wait at the reception for 20 mins to our table to become available. This might be acceptable and good service in Hong Kong but not so in NZ. I went to Hees for my son’s 8th birthday on the 2nd of Nov 2008 and there were 7 groups of people waiting to be seated at the same time as us for Yum Char. Upon being asked when we could be seated, the manager told us she doesn’t know and she can’t do anything about it. Taking more bookings than they can cater for is just a sign of greed and making as much money as possible rather than providing client with a good meal. I will not be going to Hees Garden again and I will not recommend anyone to go and dine there.

Went for dinner remembering what a great restaurant this was in the 80s
Food was great but the service was not.
We were seated at a table for 2 by the kitchen door despite there being other tables available. It was like being in a food hall with the dishes trolley being wheeled out and noisily loaded with dirty dishes. Our meals were literally dumped on to our table by surly waitresses and we needed to ask for further drinks. Don’t think they want NZers in this restaurant, no problem,we will not be back.

Food quality and taste actually rate 4.5 stars. Went for Yum Char Lunch with family. Reasonable prices. Service at times a bit slow. Types of food for yum char a bit limited (compared to other restaurant Yum char). Can order specific Yum Char dish that they serve, if none appears while you wait.

Might try for a dinner here some time soon and see what the difference is.
