Recently on holiday My husband and I decided to have dinner here with Mr 9 & Miss 7.

We arrived at about 6.20pm with 2 very hungry children as we had been driving round for 30 minutes deciding where to go.

The Menus are too busy, far to much going on in the flip through folder… about 10 pages. The music is too loud to allow you to concentrate too. Lots of small print!

We placed our order with the nice staff member, 2 kids meals (they dine free on Tuesdays, and we made that comment to the waiter, saying that’s was what we were going for) and our meals (under $20 each). Drinks arrived within 10 minutes.

They were quite busy, a couple of big groups (about 8 people each). We sat and waited. The kids were mildly entertained for the first 30 minutes, interesting decor, Music video playing, colouring in pictures… but at 7pm they were getting pretty ratty!

At 7.20pm I said “If the foods not here by 7.30 we’ll walk.”
… 7.30 we get up to go and the food arrives. We stay. Kids meals were actually pretty OK, Hubby ordered a ‘pie’ more like a runny casserole with pastry lid, I had Beef wrap, was OK.

Had to ask for the kids desserts, that came with their deals.

When I paid, I commented as to the excessive delay in our food arriving, over 1 hour is not acceptable and said we nearly walked…
the manager commented, there were 2 big groups in,
I said it would have been nice to know that, before we ordered. I was charged for the kids… apparently there is small print that says when adults orders mains over $20. I said I had told the waiter that we were having that deal, but he didn’t advise of the conditions.
The Manager did not deal with my complaint satisfactorily, I left vowing to never return… pity!

On holidays, and decided to give the one child free with one adult. My only problem is we have three children. The service was fantastic, the food was really great, and the children were treated like royalty. It was great that my little humans were treated with the knowledge they could make up their own minds. Well done Hogs Breath…. we were that impressed we have joined their wee VIP club… keep up the great work!

It was really busy but the staff did a great job. The food came out on time and was delicious.
I couldn’t fault it, good quality and value for money all round.
I had the Prime Rib Steak – the best steak I have had in a long, long time. Kids were happy and so was Mum with her salad which was huge.
Keep it up Hog’s.

def won’t go back there again. my man’s steak was rare, not well done as ordered and my baked potato looked like it’s been in the oven for a few hours…completely shrivelled up, burned at the bottom and skin tough as leather, nothing against crispy skin but not even being able to cut it with a steak knife is a different story. unfortunately the waitress couldn’t do anything about it and didn’t even make the impression like she actually cared about wether her guests enjoyed their dinner or not. big disappointment, especially for their prices.

Rubbish! avoid like the plague, the Hogs Breath franchise headquarters/head office in Australia should audit this restaurant with urgency!

Took 5-10 minutes for someone to show me to my table, there were only about eight people in the restaurant at the time and plenty of staff.

My steak was under cooked and appeared to be presented as very rare when I asked for a medium, the bread came out after main meal, staff were rude and the duty manager, possibly the owner (from Australia) was full of excuses for the steak, the staff were pre occupied by texting on their phoned and talking together. I would never return.

Absolutely appalled. Ordered steak and ribs – Steak was tasteless, one rib (where were the rest menu said ribs?) no finger bowl no extra napkins cold fries.
Fish was disgusting and mainly inedible $65 for 2 meals of such poor quality you have to be joking except that we were not laughing…anyone else hate the lack of prices on the drinks list?

We went here for a meal while on holiday with our children.

My wife’s pork was pink and my medium rare steak was stone cold and uncooked in the middle. We bought this to the attention of our waitress who apologized, but was not willing to do anything about it.

I quite honestly would never go here again, and wish we had just gone to McDonalds (which I hate).

Barely even remember the what the food was like, it was the service that sticks in the memory. The waiter must have been high. He clearly thought he was employed as an entertainer rather than a waiter. Was unbelievably rude to one of our party (pregnant) who queried the appearance of red undercooked meat. And just didn’t seem to take his job seriously. It was sort of amusing in retrospect, but in the moment it was infuriating.

As far as franchises go – it has a good name. We had the mixed grill tower. Overall I was disappointed with the amount of food that was presented for the price we were charged. It did on all accounts look impressive but failed to deliver. The salad or the fries hardly made it above the lip in the bowls. The meat was reasonable at best and the bacon was a bit on the crispy side and the meat certainly didn’t fall of the bone.Decor is hideous. The staff were well presented and well informed and very helpful. Not a bad place really. Just keep away from the Towers. Osama Bin Laden is eyeing them off

Friendly quick service, lovely food, large menu selection to cater to any tastes, and clean dining areas. Steak has always been cooked to perfection whenever I have dined here. Love their curly fries. Would definitely recommend Hogs Breath Napier to anyone/everyone!

Went for my birthday lunch in April and the food was great, only complaint was the terrible waitress! Luckily when my partner and I returned in October she wasn’t there and the other girls were lovely, and the food very yummy. We tried the giant Sunday which is a meal in itself, and definitely worth a shot. The curly fries are delicious also.

Constructive Critism,
Me and my wife dined just recently, my wife is a head chef by trade so when we asked the waitress what type of beef is used she left to find an answer, her response was “we dont know it just comes in a box labelled prime beef” so you could imagine our reaction! So we ordered something else the rack of lamb, cooked very well and tasted pretty good, i only wish someone in the resturant could’ve told us the beef was angus or hereford etc so we couldve tried that, but as for unknown meat shame on you!

Wouldn’t set foot in this place again even if I was paid to. I could barely even eat my steak because it was so full of fat. A coating of it on the sides is understandable, but all through the meat? Surely not. Especially as I ordered well done. Veggies on the side were lukewarm and rock hard. I came here expecting superbly cooked steak, since the place promotes itself as a steakhouse. Instead, the steak was the worst I’d ever tasted. Even the minute steak at the Valentines buffet is nicer than the lousy attempt they serve here. Such a shame, especially as it wasn’t exactly cheap.

Never again.

I will bring up your point with our meat supplier re fat. I apologise for your poor experience and hope you will give us another chance in the future and lets us show you our true ‘Hogspitality’.

Wouldn’t recommend this to my dog, let alone hog. You can’t complain about consistency; they consistently get it wrong. I am a qualified chef and don’t appreciate being told “The chef said next time to order your steak rare” Medium rare is medium rare. Two separate times I have had vegetables still frozen. The last time I set foot in the place giving benefit of the doubt, I got a steak sandwich which was cold, sent it back calmly, only to have it returned colder than the first time and with the original chips which were stone cold! The only saving grace is when they do get it right, the steak is really great.

Thanks for your comments. We try to get it right all the time but as a chef yourself you know sometimes things go wrong so for this I apologise. I will bring this up with our staff and review your points. One thing, we have only ever served fresh vegetables, never…    More »

Great family eating experience. Lovely meals at an affordable price, in a child friendly environment. Staff were very helpful, and some went to trouble of coming over and wishing my son happy birthday when they saw the cake. Made him feel very special. We would definitely dine there again.

Gosh, we can’t praise the management/owner, staff, food, in fact the whole place enough.
We preordered our meals (a great selection to chose from, catering to everyones likes) and drinks for 17 Cub Scouts and 12 Adults, within minutes of arriving at the nominated time the drinks followed by the meals were being served. The meal was enjoyed by everyone, the Cubs were so excited with their meals especially the curly fries, which disappeared every quickly, for many their first experience of a restaurant. No one walked away with any grumbles just plenty of full stomachs and pleasure.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, and had so much patience dealing with the 17 excitable Cubs who kept them on their toes.
Many Thanks for the great meal and service, would certainly recommend to other groups to use.
Kind regards
Carterton Cub Scouts

The steak i could not fault, but you must like it medium or more, but very tasty, but that is where the compliment stop, the service was very slow and when we got it the baked spud was cold and not cooked. They say home made sticky date pudding and caramel sauce, i don’t think so. The front of house was very you8ng and could do with a bit more training.

I was very disappointed with dining on the evening of Wednesday 8th October. Unfortunately the list of complaints is long. Breads were ordered but not brought out pre main meal. Two meals were ordered and an incorrect one was brought out with the other not coming at all. The incorrect meal was replaced with the correct one and the missing meal was later replaced so we didn’t eat together!!!The meal itself was not of a good quality.
The plates were not cleared away and we were not asked for Dessert which we wanted. We were by then fed up and to top it off were charged for the incorrect meal – it was deducted when this was pointed out – all in all a very disappointing experience that I wont do twice!!!!

We arrived at 7pm and the place was packed. The service was spot on, drinks and meals were awesome and there was a fantastic vibe to the whole place. It is not the first time we have been here and it is always consistent. Nobody does a steak as well as this place. Huge thumbs up!

I visited Hog’s Breath Cafe about a year ago and was rapt with the meals. I had no problems recommending them to my family for a place to dine last week.

However, I was Absolutely appalled by the service and food we received. Since the ownership has changed this place has gone down hill. Speaking to other people, the feed back has been much the same.

Arrived about 6pm only a few diners and staff were excellent, disappointment was our meals which were only warm, we talked about it with the manager who was not at all sympathetic or interested, on reflection this was the worst dining experience that I have had in the last 12 months and I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Perhaps it was the managers attitude that finalised it.
