We arrived at 6.15 pm and produced the coupon. They checked it against a list, and told us we could have either a glass of wine each or a bottle of heineken (but none of the other beers they had). We sat down at a dirty table. The girl came and cleared the table, but didn’t bother to wipe it down although it was wet and smeared with grease and sauce.
At 7.10 we were still waiting. We bought another drink. The food magically arrived just ten minutes later …. funny old thing!
This seemed to be happening to others as well.
The two platters listed on their menu bore no resemblance to the one we received. We got:
2 pork ribs; 4 squid rings; 2 small bits of bread; 8 potato wedges; some dipping sauce.
And that was it! The only thing that could loosely be described as barbecued was the ribs, which had clearly been done in the oven, and the barbecue flavoured dipping sauce.
This “deal” had clearly been designed purely to catch mug punters buying the grabone coupons. This was a misleading advertisement, the heinekens were $7.50 each and we did not get anything like the value described for their $25 platter.
The service was slow. The ladies’ toilet floor was awash and the gents’ had neither toilet paper nor soap – and appeared not to have had any soap or been cleaned or serviced for quite some time.
Grabone has recently advertised a fresh offer, 2 mains, bread and dips and 2 drinks for $39. We saw people in there trying this deal. Apart from one, they were all drinking heinekens, eating burgers and chips; the bread and dips looked meagre indeed – so maybe this is another “special menu”.
Poor show, Grabone. If the objective is to secure new customers for Hope Bros, then what is the purpose of sending them away feeling cheated? We certainly won’t be back.
Verdict: Give their “special offers” a wide berth – in fact, don’t even think about it!
However, the staff seemed confused and unprofessional. “Go sit down and I’ll bring you knives and forks.. and stuff..”
Derp.
Pretty ick atmosphere, scratched tables, stains all over the couches. Couldn’t sit there without wondering if someone had thrown up there on a Saturday night.
Go there if you want a cheap steak ($23 normally)… but in all seriousness… it’s no eye fillet.. haha

The menu was limited, the music far too loud for a near empty bar and restaurant, the smell of cigarette smoke wafted upstairs. The table we sat at was grimy and scratched.
As for the meal… clean out the fat in your deep frier’s/vats! Anything that was deep fried had burned dark specks all over it. The rest gnocchi and a dish of fried holumi and kumera we just plain bland and horrible. The staff were pleasant enough but our meal took AGES and there was only us dining upstairs. A definite steer-clear of place. We will never go again and never recommend this restaurant to anyone, ever!

The staff were nice, but it is not a place to go for the food…. or even a cocktail since they had run out of limes! Its a place to get drunk after work.
So not quite the atmosphere we hoped for. We ordered ontrays, so fries with aioli and 500g of mussels with bread.
The main menu only had about 5 or 6 items on it. The mains were about $18 – $20. Our mains took forever to arrive and we were too full to eat when they did. The mains are oversized too. I got the haloumi and baked kumara. Pretty bland.
Also, the upstairs toilets are so tiny and they have a step that you trip on when you walk in there (drunk or not).
So the food is ok if you are planning to share with friends a bowl of chips or a lot of mussels.
Their website doesn’t work either.

Did you eat at this restaurant? Have an opinion to share?

Also did the grabone thing. Got there “oh we don’t have a proper meal menu, just a list of dips/starters”
Great. So we ended up getting finger food. Upstairs, at a table which wasn’t cleaned yet. Even though there were plenty of staff on. Then asking about the beers. The only included beer on the $40 voucher were Heineken or a white wine.
Atmosphere was sub standard. Smoke was wafting up from below into the place.
