The Horseshoe Restaurant and Bar:
The stylish refurbishment of the Horseshoe Restaurant & bar has turned this 1950’s Art Deco Masterton landmark into one Wairarapa’s smartest dining venues, while maintaining a relaxed, casual atmosphere.
The Horseshoe is a bar as well as restaurant with a lovely range of wines including a good selection from local vineyards, a fantastic cocktail list and beers. Try the popular seafood chowder, the roast of the day or the “Seriously Awesome Steaks!”. The Horseshoe Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, 7 days a week and has ample off street parking available.

The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful, the whole place was clean and inviting and presented very well.
However, we were not overly impressed with our meals. I ordered the open chicken sandwich and the bread was burnt, my partner had the wedges and the bacon was burnt. Then there was the fish and chips for our two year old daughter. We paid $13 for her meal in which she barely ate anything from. We were not offered a smaller meal for her or any kind of cheaper alternative when chosing what to get for her. All up for our daughter we ended up paying about $25 for her meal (meal, desert, drink) which I thought was a bit much, no two year old eats $25 worth in one sitting.
The deserts we thought we paid purely for the presentation, especially when you pay the same price for an adults and children’s desert yet the children’s is four times bigger.
Overall, we were happy with the service from the staff but as far as value for money goes I’m not sure I’m willing to dine there again in a hurry
The girls working here were polite and friendly.
The children’s menu was $12 and our three years old son ordered the chicken nuggets “tender breast chunks battered and fried” these were not tender breast chunks, they were processed frozen nuggets that we try to avoid. I spoke to the waitress and the chef offered to make some new ones but we were in a rush and our son wouldn’t have eaten much more, it was just disappointing that they were mis-represented on the menu. My husband and I both had Scotch fillet steaks ordered medium rare, they were over cooked and charred, my husbands sauce had
a definite taste of packet gravy to it.
I went to the bar to get the bill and order a coffee and stood for about five minutes, there were no staff front of house, the bill was $92 for two steaks two coffees a beer and the nuggets which were charged in full.
The coffee was very good but overall not a place we would eat at again which is a pity as we are in Masterton often for business.
Following this review I was contacted by someone from the Horseshoe who displayed excellent customer service skills, I feel that my grievances have been addressed in a prompt and professional manner, I will be trying this restaurant again and am looking forward to a lovely meal.
