At Huntsman Steakhouse, we only use export grade meats from Silver Fern Farms.
All main menu meals come with unlimited baked potatoes (just ask for more!) PLUS unlimited all-you-can-eat Salad Bar selection (except blackboard specials as listed, and late evening meals after 9pm*).
The Huntsman has been cooking the best steaks in Dunedin for over 40 years.
Please note – we tend to undercook rather than overcook our steaks – please refer to our cooking guide

If your steak is not cooked to your total satisfaction PLEASE TELL US AT THE TIME – we will fix it!!
*** You are our customer – we expect to meet your requirements.
Steak is unashamedly the star at Huntsman Steakhouse… with the salad Bar the support act. Our aim is to provide the highest export-quality steak, cooked to your absolute perfection!
The Salad Bar usually includes a range of 8 traditional-style salads, such as curried egg, coleslaw, green salad, kumara or pasta, potato, banana, marinated red cabbage, and carrot along with sides such as beetroot, pickled onions, gherkins and green olives.
*After 9pm, instead of the all-you-can-eat Salad Bar, you will get a green salad and coleslaw on your plate and a choice of chips or potatoes.
All meat is halal.
Bartercard welcomed.

Rarely do I compliment chefs personally but felt this one was deserving, as I mentioned on the night; any steak from anywhere else has been ruined for me.
Service from the front in the form of Wayne, (I believe his name was), was consummate and professional. All meals at the table were served within 3 or so minutes of each other and cooked to every ones liking, a fantastic job by Peter in the kitchen. The salad bar was a refreshing change to the usual selection forced upon you elsewhere, the idea of unlimited food is of the greatest appeal to me!
Would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant and looking forward to my return visit

Thank you to all concerned

We have not been there for some years and the 1st thing that we noticed was a smell of greasy oil in the air, followed by the old carpet and dull appearance.
The oysters were a choice of crumbed or raw. Couldn’t get them in batter which I prefer. The French frys were a decided unusual colour with dark edges which suggested the cooking oil was well overdue to be changed.
My wife had venison, which she is particular fond of, but it came with the inside raw. She had about 1/3 but decided to leave the rest. Hard to get staffs attention as there was only two working. We were approached by the chef after finishing who asked if the meal was o/k. My wife pointed out the semi-raw venison and he offered to cook it some more but she was not able to face any more of the food. On a lighter note the salads were very nice.
The Huntsman definitely charges too much for their food and a lot of work is needed before the locals will return.
As far as I could tell the other patrons were not locals and that is what makes a restaurant.

I walk past this restaurant everyday on the way home and look longingly at the steak menu. I have read some great reviews and decided to throw my purse to the wind tonight and went in for a tasty steak. I had the ribeye with pepper sauce. The plate arrived and it was all about the meat. Perfectly cooked – between medium rare and rare, extremely tasty, lovely texture. The pepper sauce was deliciously rich creamy and peppery. The juiciest piece of meat I have had in a long long time. I will be dreaming of that steak when I get steak munchies again. Don’t bother buying from the supermarket – these boys get the best!

We were offered a complimentary drink on arrival. The entree consisted of tasty mussels and exquisitely cooked baked salmon accompanied by a choice of salads and fresh bread.
The chef carved the main course as it was served. We had the choice of ham, roast pork, lamb, turkey and fillet steak. There was a wide choice of the most delicious vegies to accompany the meat along with delightful stuffing and gravey.
All the guests decided to forgo the cheese platter, for fear we would leave no room for the dessert! It included scrumptious Christmas Pudding, Pavlova, Trifle, Jelly, fresh Strawberries, Custard and Ice Cream.
Then we thoroughly enjoyed coffee served with mince pies, truffles and Christmas cake. Wow! All courses were lovingly cooked to perfection.
We strongly recommend this restaurant to everyone. In fact make your booking for Christmas Day 2013 now. After reading this there won’t be room for everyone who wants to share in this memorable experience!

The steak was cooked to my liking and very juicy.

Service was very friendly, with indeed the chef and owner coming out and asking if everyone was happy with their meals.
Steaks were cooked perfectly, and usually were met with a “wow” from other patrons, as the sizes are great.
With the all you can eat salad bar with lots of different yummy treats – it is a great meal which you leave feeling most satisfied .
Definitely will be going back with others.
Thank you for the hospitality while I was in Dunedin. We will see you again.

Glad that we bought the meal with more than 50% discount voucher. This visit reminds me why we never been back to this place after our 1st visit more than 4 years ago.

Negatives – Salad selection was a bit old fashioned. A bit horrified to be handed my desert spoon with the waiter holding the spoon end!! Didn’t want to make a fuss so a good clean and all was right!!

The staff was very attentive
The steaks were cooked to perfection, and the meat was tender and juicy.
The cook (who I believe is also the owner) came round to every table and checked to make sure that everyone was happy with the way their meat was prepared.
The salad bar was good staple fare; nothing fancy but I enjoyed everything.
I’d definitely recommend this place.

The salad bar was boring, shredded red cabbage, grated carrot, watery coleslaw, potato salad pasta gerkins olives and pickled onions. The curried eggs were quite nice.
To add to the experience an older man who appeared to be the owner was busy negotiating a business deal with a guy at the table behind us in quite a loud voice. A bit unprofessional really. If it wasnt for the 30 dollar voucher we would have felt really ripped off.

We had the steak with peppercorn sauce, cooked medium. It was absolutely wonderful. The roast potato was a lovely accompanyment and the salads were sensational. I loved the kumara and orange one and went back for seconds. My husband tried some of everything, even the one that I shied away from, (the reviewer below seemed to enjoy it, so next time, I’ll try it!) the banana salad.
We didn’t have dessert; it would’ve been a struggle to move if we had! Again – that’s for next time. We really enjoyed the ambience. The service was attentive without being intrusive. We were able to thank the chef for his skills – and that means a lot. We’re all too quick (as humans) to complain when we’re dissatisfied, so a few praises don’t go amiss!
We look forward to dining there again . . . and again . . . and again! Thank you, Huntsman Steakhouse!
The entrees we ordered were squid rings and blue cod, and I thought they were overpriced for the quantity received. The squid rings were only average and while the blue cod was better, three small pieces for $15 seemed over priced.
The mains were tasty, but again, over priced. The unlimited salad bar was sub standard, considering that there were no leaf salads available- mainly consisting of carbohydrate-heavy potato salad, kumara/pumpkin salad and the like. My boyfriend commented that the smell of the banana salad had permeated the other salads, and that this was off-putting.
In short, tasty mains but overall I have definitely experienced better.

I thought the salads were even better this time around, I really liked the banana salad, I had to keep going back for more, I had never had anything like it before! It was delicious.
The steak was cooked to perfection and worth every penny as far as I am concerned.
The only thing that was a bit strange was the way one waitress was talking to another-she seemed angry and annoyed that the other waitress was working at a slower pace than her and was letting it be known! I felt sorry for the poor young girl who was trying her best!
Apart from that…well done guys! A friendly establishment with a homely feel and hearty well cooked food

Although this is a steakhouse attention still needs to be given towards non-steak meals.

Unfortunately there were only two people working when we went (one chef and one waiter) but nearly a dozen customers in the restaurant which made it a bit of a wait.
The garlic bread was just two rolls with a bit of butter, I wouldn’t recommend it.

I also like the new seating arrangements as you don’t feel so closed in now.
Wonderful food, great service and an excellent and most attentive waiter

The entree (Squid Rings and a Garlic Bread) was well below parr being some sort of reconstituted Squid with no taste and the Garlic Bread was a over toasted bread roll with little Garlic butter.
The wait for the mains was long and the meal when it arrived was disappointing with neither of our steaks cooked to our specifications also the lack of choice and the lack of flavour with the salads was also once again disappointing and changing from a nice baked potato to a deep fried potato not a good move.
I have eaten at the Huntsman for 32 years on and off and all I can say to the new proprietor is if something isn’t broke than dint fix it!!!!!!!!!
Things should have been left the way they were because that recipe worked.

The only positive i can say was the service from the waitress and the steak being good, everything else that comes with it wasnt nice at all.
All in all, we probably wouldnt dine there again.

The steaks are the best I have ever had, the lamb was amazing, and their soups are great as well!
Might want to go with a reno’ in the near future, but other then that, keep up the good work!!

Most importantly they do the most delicious steaks I’ve ever had!
