I was so pleased to have stumbled upon this unassuming place. The menu outside whilst small, had a few of my favourite dishes and had a cute air about it that made me think it was quite authentic. Which it is.
I had the chicken katsu curry which was generously portioned and thoroughly enjoyable. There’s a cute sign that says service is lower so they can keep it value for money (which it very much the case) but despite this the service was actually great.
The tables were split by some hanging screens which makes it a perfect place for catch ups. Also, it was such a nice touch to have the wait staff and kitchen thank guests when they exit. I’m so glad to have found a proper Japanese eatery.

Ken Yakitori in Anzac Ave have opened this cafe next door, which is great because Ken’s is just about my favourite restaurant in Auckland. I assumed that Kensan would therefore be excellent quality and great value, and I wasnt disappointed.
The cafe on the inside is bright and impeccably clean, and the staff (I met two) are extremely polite as per typical Japanese service.
I had a special: chicken katsu curry with rice, a side salad, and miso soup, for a total of $13.40. Absolutely delicious, and a good large serving, probably didnt even need the miso soup.
