I am very very surprised to see the negative comments about Kippers. I have lived in Hatfields Beach for about a year now and have been to Kippers approx 35/40 times in that year. I have never had a bad meal. Their chips are always crisp and tatsy but of course if you leave th. The nuggets I have never had the nuggets but am sure as they are just nuggets they will inherently hit and miss being a processed product after all! Now the fish…I am a real snob when it comes to my battered fish and I can honestly say that I have never ever had better in New Zealand. So in summary ignore the negative comments as Kippers is a must visit!

Kippers so disappointed in my order, your one of my local takeaway shops and will not be back after ordering the kids nugget and chips off your menu.

I order this everytime i come for my son but this time it was full of salt the nuggets were covered, not nice!!

Also i used to get a little sauce packet this time seems to not have unless it just got left out.

I was shocked at the amount of chips you get in the meal ok its only $5 but there was maybe a very small handful of chips.

So to be honest ill be giving my business elsewere in Orewa you guys used to be one of the best but the prices are high and the amount of food is getting smaller.

Kind regards
Emma

On a recent trip to Owera we stopped at Kippers Takeaways for a meal. To be honest it was the best fish and chips I have ever had. We had a gourmet chicken burger. fish and chips and it was just divine. I would not hesitate in recommending Kippers to anyone. Looking forward to coming again when I next come to Owera

Cheers

My wife and I went to Kippers last week, and although not quite as some others have said, it was certainly not to the standard others have praised about.

Found the portions small, and the chips were soggy.

My wife had a piece of fish, it was fresh, but again soggy.

My burger was okay, but nothing to write home about.

We only get takeaways every now and then, but were somewhat disappointed in this experience.

However, the staff were friendly and although busy, food arrived without much delay.

Hi Jacob, thanks for taking the time to review and providing constructive criticism. Soggy fish and chips is not good! It is a problem for all takeaways unfortunately. When we dish it up it is crispy and fresh. The best time of course to eat it. If it is soggy…    More »

Update:
Excellent response to a customer complaint. “We don’t want your business”.

My son would not have ordered chicken nuggets, he doesn’t like them. Too salty. In fact, if they were reconstituted salty “chicken”, then perhaps that is why they could not be differentiated from reconstituted “fish” in the taste test.

So, we have portions getting smaller and smaller, essentially calling customers mistaken or liars, tip-top plain white buns for “gourmet burgers” that cost nearly $10.

And the best you can come up is “We don’t want your business”

My son ordered fish nuggets. He always orders fish nuggets. His usual words are “Kids nuggets meal with fish”. As children are creatures of habit, I doubt he would change.

I think you will find you are mistaken, particularly as, in retail, and most businesses, the customer is always right.

————

Oh dear, it just gets worse.

I usually buy my son a “kids nugget meal with fish” about once a month. He’s 6, and I let him go and order it himself, part of getting him use to paying for things, getting change etc.

Up until the latest purchase, the fish was “fresh”, although small, and the chips were okay, but again still small portions. For $5, not really good value, but kids hound you, and you buckle and they were convenient.

Having just bought my son a “kids nugget meal with fish” tonight, I was disgusted to find small processed fish nuggets obviously bulk bought or out of a box. I tasted one, and it was “foul”.

We have given Kippers plenty of opportunity to improve. However, tonight was truly the last time we purchase anything from them.

The other 3 much better fish ‘n’ chip shops will now get our business until there are new owners that have a clue taking over Kippers.

Cheers

Hello Karl, thank you for once again visiting Kippers. I was there when your son placed his order this evening. I heard the lady serving him check that he wanted chicken nuggets, so that’s what he got. NOT FISH. And yes, the chicken nuggets (Inghams – the ones…    More »

ok, so this weeks takeaways didn’t go as well as I had planned. I purchased our order and decided to try the salt a pepper squid. Well! JinJing (my wife) took it and wouldn’t give it back, she wouldn’t even share it. So I phoned another order through, went in and picked it up and was soooo glad that I did. YUMMMMM!!! And if I’m going to be totally honest, I plan on sneaking up there during the day today to get some more Salt and Pepper Squid – and this time I won’t have to share it.

Thank you for giving me the suggestion Anette.

Loving the new ownership at Kippers, the menu has improved so much, lovely little touches that make a difference, food is always fresh and absolutely delicious, will definitely be the only chip shop we visit – great new opening hours and always open when they say they are.

Ok, so here is the confession. My wife has decided I need to do more around the house so a couple of months ago we agreed that I would cook dinner twice a week. Which as it turned out actually means that she expects me to COOK -she’s not a fan of fast food – however, recently, feeling brave I arrived home with takeaways from Kippers (I got chips, a homemade fishcakes each, a burger for me and a salad for her, and I had a chocolate fish while I waited for my order) We silently ate dinner but she left the table stating “not bad, I see they don’t pre-cook their food” and as there was no cold sholder for the rest of the night – I breathed a sigh of relief. I decided to push my luck the following week and came home with Kippers again – as soon as I got in the door and the aroma wafted through the kitchen, I was greeted with ‘Did you get the fishcakes?’ JinJing has decided that as it really does tast like homemade food she will allow me to use Kippers on one of the nights I have to cook. Now I know alot of men out there would be saying….. wow he is whipped… but, if we are honest with ourselves, if our wives are happy – then everyone is happy. And yes I am happy…. Thanks Kippers!!!
ps, Im pretty sure JinJing doesn’t know about this website, but I’ll keep you updated :-)

I laughed all the way through this story. Thanks for sharing. Might I suggest that to keep in the good books, next week you take home the ‘Salt & Pepper Squid’. It is prepared by our in house chef and is delicious. JinJing will love it.

What happened to Kippers? I have been a weekly customer for over 3 years but since the new owners took over it has gone downhill dramatically. Friday was the last time I will ever visit! The food is greasy, the once devine fishcakes and mussel fritters are now disgusting. They also seem to have gotten rid of all the friendly staff! It is just such as shame that our favourite fish and chip shop is now so awful.

I’m shocked to hear that and find it very hard to believe, as I have customers contact me every day to specifically let me know that our food and service has improved dramatically. I have not found anyone who has tried our fish cakes and other items and not raved…    More »

Update (25 Mar 2011):
Was asked to go back to Kippers, now they were under new management.

Unfortunately, I have to say they are even worse than before.

We ordered a cheese burger, a “gourmet” Chicken Burger (‘The Chook’, which costs nearly $10) and potato fritters.

The buns were terrible, cheap, nasty and tasteless.

The cheese burger was “adequate”, maybe 6/10.

The potato fritters were greasy, tiny over cooked pieces of nothingness.

However, the $10 chicken burger was a complete rip off. Hardly any chicken, cheap and nasty bun (not what one would expect from a “gourmet” burger.) and minuscule in size.

The buns for both burgers looked like something you could get from the discount bin at the supermarket, a far cry from the substantial, tasty sesame seed buns the previous owners used.

You guys need to buck up your ideas. There are two other fish and chip takeaways in walking distance.

Right now, we won’t waste money on you guys.

I’ve been in Orewa/Rodney for 7 years, and Kippers used to be my regular takeaway.

Unfortunately, in recent months it’s gone really down hill.

Key things:
1. chip quality and portion size has become terrible
2. fish quality has gone down hill (last time I am sure it was frozen, not fresh)
3. meals are either soggy or burnt – seldom “just right”
4. long wait times
5. often closes 15-20 minutes before advertised hours

Kippers has been my local takeaway for nearly 3 years. My doctor recently told me to lay off the fried food. When I told Andrew and Sarah at Kippers they said they could cook heart healthy food too. I now get 2 grilled snapper and a green salad every Friday. Andrew and Sarah always go the extra mile to make their customers happy and this makes all the difference. I wish Kippers all the best.

Best fish and chip shop in NZ!!

We have been going to kippers for about a year and would never go anywhere else. The fish is fresh and the chips are soooo yummy. The absolute best thing on the menu though is the Lusty Burger. It is so filling with its massive pattie, steak and mushrooms. The staff are really friendly. The wait can be a bit long in summer but we just call ahead to get to the front of the line.

We were so impressed with this fish and chip shop that I felt I must tell everyone about it! We were passing through Orewa and stopped at Kippers for lunch. We have been eating fish and chips for a long time but we can’t remember that last time we had such a wonderful meal! The fish was fresh and well drained and the chips were the best we have tasted. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will definately make this a regular destination and recommend it to all.
