I have taken the kids there about six times. Service great, food spot on and priced right. Have ordered the kids packs each time and not being a red meat eater have loved the fish burgers. Have recommended to heaps of friends. Kids ask for it by name alrrady – watch out Macdonalds!

Have been here twice in the last 6 months or so – Chips tasted burnt both times.
Ordered crumbed fish twice, got battered both (silly me for not checking the second time – who would have thought). The batter on both the fish and the battered crab stick was tough and chewy. Pity, because its so close to the movie hire place!

Got takeaways from here and was disappointed, definitely not worth the effort or money, or the excessive time waiting to get our order.

Ordered a vegetarian burger and either the patty was actually meat by accident or it had been cooked in bacon grease – really horrid taste and the patty wasn’t great in itself.

Burger Fuel heaps better for burgers and they know to cook vege food separately.

Chips were soggy and not at all tasty.

Disappointing, will never go back. If it were possible to give this zero stars I would.

Went to this place last night as I was hankering for some fish. Ordered the fish of the day. Went to the freezer for a trumpet for dessert and they’re all soft. icecream leaking out of the packaging and the smell …..! The freezer’s obviously been off for a while – the icecreams were too. The girl behind the counter was clearly disinterested. Got home to find the fish WAY overcooked, batter very dark, fish was dry. Won’t be going back as there’s obviously a problem with consistency here. And to those who think this is moaning? Just telling you the facts guys.

I and my husband saw it and dropped in. Fish was fresh and chips crunchy. Second visit fish was small portion and little chewy and chips soggy. Could taste they had used fresh oil thou which is good. Love the name and theme, friendly staff and the place is clean, clean, clean. I do see why some people have a grizzle as the prices are a bit high. Will go back just hope they get consistency in quality then I think it’s worth it, that’s the ticket to good fish and chips. Good luck to them.

I have been to Kiwiana about 3x times before and had OK Fish & Chips. However my Monday experience left me with a bad taste in the mouth.

We got the chips (a generous portion) but they were about the soggiest thing I have ever eaten. I think I managed about 5 chips before I had to stop. How can anyone mess up chips that much.

And then the fish. One Terakihi ordered battered – I thought they got it wrong and it was crumbed because it was dark brown. No it was way overcooked. The horrible batter couldn’t mask the dry fish inside.

The other fish was grilled and they even managed to mess this one up as well. When I get grilled fish I don’t think the default colour should be black. And I also don’t think I have to chew fish 20x times to swallow.

I think this place has HUGE problems with consistency. Maybe its the staff? Maybe its the appliances? Maybe its the produce? I don’t think I can ever go there again.

I’m sure its not broken – so better start fixing.

OK… I don’t know what the Matthew guy below me is complaining about. I’m a regular at Kiwiana and their customer service is very good. i got a full barrel of chips for free because the guy wanted to say sorry that they were out of kumara chips (i only ordered half a barrel!)

you can play Xbox 360 while you wait for your chips, the interior looks very nice, the seating is nice, the tables usually have condiments there for you to use. and the staff have always been very polite for me, they always seem very busy and somehow they never take very long with the order. I cant complain about any of their orders they’ve filled for me.

read most of these reviews before taking a punt. fish was excellent. had a crumbed terakihi and a battered gurnard. chips also lovely and generous large portion. price was good value. Alot of ppl seem to be complaining about the fish size. perhaps a little smaller than elsewhere but wouldnt have noticed otherwise. would have given 5 stars but also got a burger which was average, but what do u expect from a fish and chip shop.

I have tryed Kiwiana twice now and i had a burger and chips, burger was not good at all. No taste at all and messy to eat. Second time i had the fish and chips, fish almost well over cooked batter had gone dark brown. I found the staff to be rude and not friendly at all. Great place and great idea, pity they can not cook and a bit of customer service goes a long way. as for competitors writing negative feed back i dont think so you guys are destroying this place all by yourself. i wont be going back thats for sure !!!

Have eaten here twice now. The first visit the fish was great, and had loads of chips. The 2nd visit, was very disappointing. The fish batter was over oily, falling apart and the fish were stuck to the greasy chips. The chips serving in itself was measly. For a dinner of 3 fish, hot dog, chips and a lime shake coming to nearly $30 dollars I would expect a much better quality standard. We were so disappointed we didn’t finish the meal and threw some of it away. I won’t be coming back again and will go back to the cheap local guy who surprisingly has better quality & value for money.

Kiwiana produces very nice chips upon occasion but that is balanced by other times when they have been very poor. this evening I ordered 5 scoops of chips and receaved less than 3. this is apoor preformance on top of the mingy industry standard size scoops of chips which lose at least 1/3 of thir mass in cooking

My daughter has to be gluten free. This is the only shop in the area where i can buy chips which are not cross contaminated by other items being cooked with them. Also they will pan fry some fish for her that is gluten free. Great job guys allows us as a family to have take-away with out going to separate stores for her or her missing out and having to cook for her. As all you G/F people know if you have to cook for one in the family may as well cook for everyone. Nice option for G/f people also chips are great and so is the fish.

I recently found kiwiana on a return trip from the Airport having collected some overseas guests on a late & delayed flight. I so wanted to make a point of sending in this review as not only was the food impeccable, beautifully presented & hastily delivered but the staff were more than one could have asked for. They were extremely welcoming & friendly in good old kiwi..ana style..which we thank you for & will with out any doubt return again.(Loved the batter on the fish it reminded me of a recipe that my Grandmother used) Thanks again !

Unlike the below “review” which reads more like an advert by the owner rather than a genuine review I too have been very disappointed by the abrutness and surly attitude of the staff. I do not mind paying a high price for fresh fish but not for a slither of a fillet. I am also unsure of how they get their fish straight from a fishing boat as that doesn’t happen unless they own their own vessel which I doubt they do. This was a third visit hoping that they have changed but it was just another waste of another odd $30.

Kiwiana – The Best Fish & Chip Experience in the World.
Cnr Great South Road & Market Road, Auckland (Motorway off at Market Rd)
Monday to Sunday 11am to 9pm
Ph: 0800 11 22 55 Fax: 09 522 1743

I have been trying to find a place who does a great pan fried Snapper & Cajun for Michael & we just found the best in New Zealand!

Do you remember how the Fish n’ Chip Shops had generous & fresh & delicious food and also didn’t cost the earth, well that is Kiwiana.

Everything there is Kiwiana and Roger the Manager is such a down to earth guy and we had a good old chat with him. Roger said how the fish arrives in early each morning straight off the fishing boats.

The lady who served us said one scoop would be enough for two adults and we couldn’t finish it and that was our Linner (Lunch & Dinner in one meal). They make milkshakes how they use too as well.

While we were there, a man walked in and said hi! I’m from overseas and I heard you have the best fish and chips in town! and he made his order, at the end he had to compliment them as we did as well, and well deserved.

I thought I would go one step further and share it with all my friends who live in Auckland or maybe visiting Auckland.

Monday and Tuesday’s are the best days to get served smartly, Wednesday to Sunday they are flat out so expect a little wait. They have all the latest Playstation games including Halo. Any other Kiwiana reading material there that will leave you laughing so hard as I did, that is if you are a true Kiwi.

Share this with your friends and family seriously Roger and his staff at Kiwiana rocked and they won’t let you down. I told Michael I will not be cooking on Monday or Tuesday’s any more as we are going to Kiwiana instead… so if you are going to Kiwiana on Monday or Tuesday next week. I will see you there!

P.S. Michael just mentioned to me don’t forget to tell them they have fritters and all sorts of burgers. Your Fish choice is Tarakihi, Blue Nose, Hapuka, Snapper & there is a Kids menu and more. And you can eat in or takeaway. Michael said don’t forget the Free Minties Lollies & wooden cutlery. We Highly Recommend Kiwiana, but I suppose you got that. Who would ever think I would be recommending a Takeaway… I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t so damn good! Hope to see you there!

Michael Larimar likes Kiwiana.
Michael Larimar Absolutely amazing food! I had the Cajun Snapper and it was stunning. The place is lovely – the decor is retro Kiwi in the best way – warm, relaxed and inviting, and as Ariana mentioned there is a Full HD TV with an Xbox and loads of new release games – all sitting on a wooden table in front of a classic homely couch! We will be going back there soon and often! Their by-line should be “The way it used to be…The way it should be!”

Very disappointed after trying Kiwiana for the very first time.

After reading the bad reviews I thought I would give it a go with my own taste buds and the following is my conclusion…

Great concept, average food, very small serving sizes and extra large prices!

I ended up paying $50 to try to feed the fiance and myself.

We first started with a thick shake whilst we waited for the main. My shake was tasteless and had very little flavouring in it. It was a lime flavour that I ordered and I could taste more milk flavour than lime flavouring.

Next our dinner arrived and we took it home hoping for better things.

What a disappointment to unravel the newspaper. Inside were two deep fried snapper which would have been lucky to have been 10Cm’s in length and 5Cm’s in width, and we paid $6.90 for each piece!

I must say the fish was nice, but at $6.90 for what you get, come on guys!

I don’t know how the owners of this place can sleep at night robbing every day people in seek of some good old kiwi fish n chips.

If you are charging big prices for your staff overheads, may I suggest you cut your staff in half and reduce your prices to your customers. I think I counted about 6 staff whilst at your store. You could get by with 3 quite comfortably.

I’ve read other peoples reviews about the staff being friendly, only one out of the 6 staff seemed to show any sort of warmth towards us at all. The front till girl had about as much personality as a wet blanket.

We’ll be heading back to the old faithful Diamond takeaways next time where our $50 would have gone much, much further.

And to the owners of Kiwiana who think your competitors are just writing bad reviews about you, they arent. They are most probably people like myself who think you should just pull your socks up and improve your game if you want to stay in the food industry. We deserve better!

I was considering trying Kiwiana again after a bad experience, but thought I’d check out their recent reviews first and see that there’s no improvement. So I thought I’d better add my experience – I am not a competitor or anything like that, just a local who was excited to see a fish and chip shop finally in our area. And boy was I massively disappointed with the fish! Way overcooked to the point where the batter was brown/black,chewy and oily and there was more batter than fish. I took it back and said I would be happy for a second batch. The staff took it back to the chef, he didn’t even check the fish out, after she told him it was overcooked he looked at me with disgust and told her to give me a refund instead! I’ll be the first to admit that it’s hard to find good fish and chips, but I can normally stomach a very average piece of overcooked pre-battered fish. But this was so overcooked I wouldn’t have fed it to the dog! Then to top it all off, the chef rolled his eyes at me like I didn’t know what I was talking about…even a hungry homeless person wouldn’t have touched that stuff. My mind boggles at how they qualified for top shop….

The shop looks great from the outside.

The fish & chips do not live up to the surroundings. Best to drive past or head across the road for Chinese.

The fish was excellent — Blackboard and menu said the price was $3.50 per piece of fish — but the till said, and I paid $3.90 due to GST price increase of 2.5% —- 40 cents increase is far more than 2.5%. New pricing board was meant to have arrive that day. Maybe the paper copy of the menus should have been withdrawn and a notice place on the black board to inform the customer of the price were incorrect due to GST.

However the fish, friendly service and the shop theme was an enjoyable experience — I will recommend this takeaways – and defiantly will return.

As I traveled there especially – I phoned first — 0800 number no answer – shop number no answer except a pre-recorded voice saying that text and email orders would soon be coming — I called many time and got the same message – annoying as this gave no way of talking to the shop person.
I have only given the shop a 4 star due to the unnecessary errors with prices and phone service — but well worthy of a 5 star.

We have purchased fish and chips here about 5-6 times since they opened.

They have a great range of fresh fish – different types, cooked in a variety of ways (battered, crumbed, grilled, etc).

Most of the times it has been excellent, and I would have given 5 stars except once the batter on the fish was undercooked. But, you get that sometimes even at the best of them!

I have also purchased a burger once and it was excellent.

I was recommended this by my sister-in-law. She said they had been several times and once the order had been wrong but otherwise they liked it.

I then read the reviews here and couldnt believe it. Either great or bad, no tmuch in between.

We ordered by phone, picked it up.

The chips were lovely, the fish was also lovely (had market fish) and yes the pieces were small BUT fish is hellishly expensive in Auckland.

So, next time we will order twice as much fish and half as many chips (the scoops are very generous.

To be honest I lean toward great far more than the one star reviewers.

So, if they could be slightly more generous with their fish, yay.

Had the fish crumbed, it was fresh and tasty

Had been past a couple of times and thought that I would try it tonight. Big mistake. Its not expensive but when you can’t eat what you paid for it becomes expensive. Noticed that the positive review on here all seem to have the similar wording/tags and a whole bunch of !!! by one time reviewers. Very suspect.

An excellent good old Kiwi fish n chip shop. They have the BEST chips in Auckland hands down, and very decent scoop sizes too. Ok, first, I don’t work for the competition or in the food business, 2nd, we have been 5 times to this F&C shop, & they have ranged from 3 to 5 star quality! they are much much better than the close competition who I used to go to! The fish is freshly cooked, chips nice! I do find reading reviews of 1 star & agree that these are probably people with an agenda, they should be checked out. So anyway, I’m writing this while my wife go’s & picks up our phone order from them. Lastly, they have an X-Box to play while you wait & the dacore is really original & fun! & wow, they deliver for $5 with in 2Km of the shop!!

I am a local to Kiwiana and recently paid them a visit at dinner time. I walked in and the whole atmosphere to the place was as kiwi as the good old warehouse gumboots a was wearing from the dog walk that I was coming home from. I was greeted by a smily young adult ready to take my order. She gave me a recomended item off the menu so I put my trust in her and paid. As it was an early dinner for me, the place was quiet and there were two gentleman in the kitchen cooking my order. Also I seemed to notice that all three of the staff were inked which seemed to make the place even more kiwiana!! My meal arrived in less than 10mins and then I was on my way home for the evening. Please do not listen to the critical reviews about this shop as they are UTTER GARBAGE!! I am an ex top female chef in New Zealand and no good food when I eat it. And if you have had a bad experience at this place, go back again and give them a second chance.

I had been really looking forward to ‘Kiwiana’ opening, but after a few bad reviews was a bit dubious about forking out my hard earned money on some flash fish and chips. I wish I had listened to those reviews…
Tonight I had some truly TERRIBLE fish and chips!!!
I ordered 2 scoops of chips, 2 market fish (gurnard) and 2 potato fritters. Everything was overcooked, and the potato fritters tasted like they had never been near a potato.
I totally regret going there, and never will again!!!
Please don’t waste your time or money on this god awful ‘food’.
I forgot to add that I also ordered a “good old thickshake”…it was not thick at all, my 1 year old daughter had no trouble sucking it through the straw…rip-off!!!

This place is amazing!!! Some of the best fish and chips I have ever had, and that’s saying something. The tarakihi was delicious, the batter perfect and the fish just melted in my mouth. My partners fish of the day was yum too, great to see something cheaper still tasting delish. His hotdog was the best he’s had too! The portion of chips was huge, we ordered two as we are used to other places not being as generous. They were wonderful as well, fresh and not oily at all, had the perfect amount of salt too. The only downside is that they were a little undercooked, but thats all good! I loved how they provide little wooden knifes and forks and free tomato sauce and vinegar for those who eat in. And they also have little bottles of hand sanitiser! Perfect! Although the tartare sauce is a little expensive at $3, its so worth it!! Definitely our first choice for when we come up to Auckland!

Hi Folks, If you’re in and around the Central Auckland suburbs and you’re after good quality fish and chips, look no further than “Kiwiana Fish & Chips” on corner of Great South and Market Roads. The reasonably priced fish (Tarakihi) was perfectly cooked and the chips were “top self”. A bargain as well as fantastic feed. Only problem is we live on the North Shore! We’ll just have to hope the owner thinks about opening another store in Albany (Please!?)

Check them out, people!

This place was absolutely amazing. I can’t believe the bad reviews. They must have been at a different restaurant or as one guy has said – “deliberately trying to sabotage what is a great fish & chip shop”. The fish we had was great with really good size, thick portions. Chips were great too. Not under or overcooked; nice and crunchy. What I noticed most of all was how clean the place was. No smell at all and the staff were all very tidy (which is not normal in most fish & chip shops) The Flat Screen TV for play-station is a great idea and the overall decor is tastefully done – “love the tables”. I just wish they had a “Kiwiana” in the South Island. Great to see old fashioned “L & P”. I thought we only had that down in the deep South.

This new trendy takeaway shop on the corner of Gt South Rd and Market Rd describes itself as “the best fish and chip experience in the world”. I have now made two visits, and have not only enjoyed the really excellent food, but the friendly young staff, the amazing decor (based round Footrot Flats) and great prices. I was also impressed with the range of food. I’ve had the ‘fish of the day’ and chips – a generous amount, and as crisp and fresh as I have had anywhere. This was definitely a great find. I’ll be a regular customer! I’ve got to try out the rest of the menu if nothing else

I thought the staff were lovely and friendly ordered 3 burgers lamb, chicken and beef and chips all were just great and very filling went there last night and will definitely be back again! As another comment on here says I reckon bad reviews are coming from across the road at Diamond Takeaways as when I drive past there now they are a lot quieter than they used to be and 100% would get a burger from Kiwiana much fresher and tastier

Best fish n chips we have had for a long time. The best oysters and batter on the fish was stunning. The chips were crunchy and yummy. I can’t believe what the other reviews are saying (sour grapes)?? it sounds to me that they are causing some concern in the area by local competitors. They took a little time but hey they are new and I don’t mind waiting for quality. Give them a go you won’t be disappointed.

Have watched the development of this establishment for some time on journeys down to Epsom. Tried it out. Bought the vege burger- OMG – how bad was it???? Never again will I visit this place other than to look at the fab decor! The burger was soggy, tasteless, cooked lettuce, touch of beetroot and a sliver of tomato. As for the sauce, what and where was it?? Being a grandmother who has eaten at many takeaway places over many years this has to of been the worse food experience ever.

Disappointed. Waited for an hour, got home, set the table and opened up the packet only to find 4 pieces of snapper the size of oysters. Like with others, had driven past a few times and wanted to check out what all the fuss was about.
The chips were good, but the batter on the fish was obviously burnt but still served to us.
The burgers, were bland and burnt, definitely not $8 worth when you compare them to Murder Burger, Handmade, burger fuel etc. The icing on the cake was when we asked for the burger without egg, we were served one with two eggs, and charged for the extra. They realised the mistake before serving us the order and I watched the chef tell the serving staff to just give it to us as it was takeaway and we wouldn’t realise until we got home. Watch out allergy sufferers!

Have to laugh, why are all the positive posts having a dig at the local Chinese? I know at least two of these posts are from people who have never worked in the area, let alone a food outlet. I think I might be giving the Diamond a go this weekend!

We drove there from the Shore to get some dinner on Sunday night. My husband goes past everyday and has raved about how many people are always queued outside. The food was ok but nothing to rave about. The burgers were a little soggy and the chicken in mine didn’t have any flavour. My husband and son weren’t impressed with their burgers either. It was a little disappointing. :(

New place, nice decor. Heaps of staff. Not sure if any of them know what they are doing. Ordered 4 snapper 2 scoops of chips. Price was reasonable, quality not great. Batter almost burnt on the outside, and as another has posted a yellowy goo on the inside. Fairly certain I didn’t get snapper more like “market fish”. Had to wait half an hour for the food. There are some very good fish and chips around, this isn’t one of them. I suspect that the people who have given this place 5 stars have some sort of connection to the business.

Great place! batter was the best around and the chips were crispy (although I didn’t get enough)I guess the two bad reviews currently here are from the asian takeaways across the road.( Reaking instead of leaking haha!)

I went there on the 25 March and ordered 1 snapper, 1 portion of chips, 2 oysters, 1 scallop and 1 mussel. They had around 7-8 people waiting and it took 15-20mins but that was ok. The owner gave a couple of people free drinks but not everyone who was waiting that wasn’t ok. When I was given my order and got back to work the portion of chips was huge and they were crunchy on the outside, fluffy in the middle. The snapper batter wasn’t cooked properly on the inside and had a yellow gooey substance, only got one oyster instead of the two and it was dry??? The scallop wasn’t there, only the prepackaged breadcrumb surrounding it, really disappointing to bite into. Mussel wasn’t there either. Great shop etc… but they might have to go back and get the basics right.

The best lamb burger I have ever had! My wife had the fish and chips and there is no place we know of in Auckland that does the batter as well as these guys. So good to have great fish and chips nearby!!!

Superb.

Started off with a bad service. They were training a new staff which was fine by me, but the girl who served us didn’t give us much informations for their menu when we asked some questions. We ordered market fish, fish burger and 3 scoops chips. We had to wait about 20mins and they were not busy at that time. While we were waiting, all the staff were mucking around and talking a lot. finally we got our food! and so disappointed… fish burger was good but they put the burger on side way so sauce was reaking from the paper bag. Chips were so soggy and fish were so oily. I don’t think I will go back there for fish & chips again!!!!
