The Kokako Cafe & Roastery in Grey Lynn has been created after 10 years of growing the Kokako brand.

With an intrinsic focus on sustainability and initiating business practices which are practical and resourceful we have created a cafe & roastery in which transparency and openness is paramount. We want to share what we have learnt & influence other businesses and customers to follow our lead.

We’ve thought about just about every process in our business and although we know we’re not perfect, we think we’ve covered all the bases.

Our cafe fitout was approached with a focus on using local suppliers and up-cycling of ‘found’ materials that could be placed in a contemporary setting. Many of the internal windows, doors & merchandise was sourced from Grey Lynn salvage yards and given a new life. Where we’ve created new joinery we’ve used a local supplier, even re-manufacturing a range of metal chairs from the 1950′s.

Our menu has a strong focus on organic & natural ingredients and where possible we source from local or New Zealand suppliers. We have honey from a local Grey Lynn beekeeper, a range of beverages from Gisborne on the East Coast and by default we use Free Range Organic Eggs.

We have been ‘conscious’ of being a sustainable business for over 10 years, and so the 9 badges we have as a Conscious Consumers Cafe are not something we have strived for, we see them as just the way we do things at Kokako.

We look forward to welcoming you, where you’ll be able to try one of our Certified Fairtrade Organic Coffees roasted right on the premises!

The best coffee in town> The food is great. Excelent service, proferssional friendly efficient. I like the roasting equipment in the store. So people can see the roasting on site.
Beautifull set up.
Great job.

Lunched today – nice decor, nice service, boring bland overpriced food, tepid coffee. Couldn’t even finish frittata, mates poached eggs were tiniest we’ve ever seen – bantam eggs? With all the preciousness about sourcing ingredients, why such a limited boring menu?

My friend and I dined here on a Sunday morning.
She ordered a Pacific Princess smoothie, $6.50 and I, a flat white. The smoothie came in a vintage mason jar which was a nice touch, the flavour nice, but nothing spectacular. My flat white was great, nice flavour and nice price too, only $4!
I ordered the organic potato hash cake, $17.50 and her, the scrambled eggs, $12. When the food was delivered, we were very unimpressed. There was one hash cake with a dollop of feta cheese and half an avocado sliced on top. Tasted great, but it was incredibly over priced for what it was. The scrambled eggs left a lot to be desired and one measly slice of toast, yeesh.
The service was good, friendly enough but the decor was the stand out feature of our whole experience! The open coffee roastery and kitchen was great, the place had a great, light, open atmosphere and the old school hall benches were a great touch!

Would I go here again? Yes, but only for coffee.

This newly opened cafe is an absolute delight. For a start they roast their own branded wonderful organic & fairtrade coffee – very interesting coffee & tea menu (Vietnamese Macchiato?) featuring complementary extras such as organic milk. The breakfast/brunch food is vegetarian (you won’t miss the meat at all), healthy and creative (if you’re tired of Eggs Benedict or ‘big Kiwi’ breakfasts step right up). Put it this way, if you tell me there’s a better breakfast dish than the huevos rancheros-inspired baked eggs with black beans, chilli, kumara and miniature corn-bread I’ll tell you you’re dreaming. Also delivers the kind of service you take for granted overseas but don’t see much in New Zealand.

I like to visit a lot of cafes around Auckland & I have to say this is my new favourite. I do prefer healthy food so this ticks the boxes. The interior looks very cool & is a lovely space to spend time in. Staff were very warm & friendly. I thought the food was fresh, well presented & tasty. Coffee was great also but the blueberry almond milk & goji berry shake yum! I’ll be back.

Just thought I’d offer my 2 cents as I couldn’t agree less with the previous poster (in fact I thought I had the wrong café when I read their post!).

The food is excellent (if a little lacking in the bacon department). The staff are delightful and the décor is very very tasteful.

The coffee … oh the coffee. You know when you get good coffee – I mean really good coffee – and you finish your cup and think about rocking back up and getting another straight away? That’s what it’s like.
And it’s Fair Trade. And it’s cheaper than most other cafés. Thanks, guys.

Best of all, the place is as unpretentious as you could get, which makes it the coolest place around. Forget P Rd. I’ll be eating in Grey Lynn from now on.

I was looking forward to go to this place. Nice staff, nice building but bad food. My hash brown were uncooked and the coffee took for ever. I sent the food back because it was just horrible but the wait staff was nice and apologised. Expensive for what it is and the biggest selling point is the building rather than the food. No going back!!
