2013 – The whole family went out the other weekend, and I have to say, it’s most likely the best fish and chips in New Zealand. The chips were cooked perfect, our fish was fantastic. I think they need to work on there service, all the effort is put into the food yet our arrival was met with a head nod from the mario lady. All the food was good value except for the fish which was a bit pricey.
Over all, highly recommended if your coming for extremely good food and not for the service.

What use to be the best fish and chips in the North is now quite honestly the worst. The girls managing the shop and cooking were out smoking then continue to cook without washing hands, the boy who had just come from the gym was behind the counter picking chips out of a customer order!!! With our order the donuts were burnt and the chips under cooked. Would I pay $12 for a piece of fish at this place no way. Keep driving to Matakana if you want good fish and chips.

Disapointing visit to Leigh Fish & Chips shop on Saturday!
Firstly we didn’t get even a hello!
They had run out of fish and it was only just gone past 2pm in the afternoon (late lunch)…
We ordered just some hot chips 2 scoops to keep us going.
Asked for a little chicken salt on them – got grunted at.
When we collected them, I was left standing there whilst 6 people just chatted in the kitchen area, I could see the chips waiting in the warmer… so I said HELLO, HERE TO GET MY CHIPS… which was met with a “oh yeah” and they got handed to me.
Lovely hot chips which were absolutely drowing in salt… very very disapointing…
Get it together Leigh Fish and Chips, you used to be an institution… but now, not so much. We are locals, so felt pretty ripped off – I pity the summer time diners that might frequent your shop. Sorry, but completely poor form.

We love this place. It’s got fantastic local, funky flair to it and they make pretty good food too! It is a little pricy but if you’re eating in it’s worth it. Has a real surfy type vibe to it. The burgers are awesome and great portions of chips.

We by-passed other food joints in anticipation of once again indulging in takeaways from Leigh. Sadly things arent quite what they were. To be fair my burger was very good and so was the gurnard although the batter was a bit oily and undercooked and the pieces were very small.
The ‘homemade’ mussel fritter appeared to contain almost no mussel, it was a 90% doughy bread like substance with no mussel taste.
Their potato fritter should not have the word potato in it as it was more like a reconstituted floury cardboard substance that smelt and tasted like chemicals. Do the owners actually eat their own food?? A real slice of potato in batter is all one expects or asks, please!! These were feed to the seagulls who didnt want to fight over it either.
