At Dai Pai Dong (Live Fish), situated at Auckland Fish Market, you choose your fish and the way you want it cooked.

Greetings and welcome to Dai Pai Dong our family run restaurant that brings the excitement of Hong Kong street cafes to Auckland’s waterfront. We are the freshest seafood dining experience in Auckland and who can argue, our fish comes straight from our display tanks.

Our live seafood is normally caught and delivered within 24 hours into our specially designed storage tanks. From abalone to King Crabs and Lobster we have the best specimens the ocean can offer.

Our staff can help you choose what you’d like to eat, and suggest ways of preparing it in our open kitchen. No matter how you prefer your fish, steamed with black bean or garlic sauce, sashimi style or battered, we can cook your seafood to order or in a traditional Cantonese style.

The Dai Pai Dong no-fuss dining philosophy has long been recognized by Asian nations as the most effective way to fully benefit from nutrient rich fresh seafood while still enjoying the fullest flavours possible. It is also a most affordable way of dining.

We call this Al fresco style eating, dai pai dong.

First of all the service was bad. We ordered a $28.00 seafood platter which was a huge disappointment, everything in there was deep fried and straight from the box, so whats the point of paying $28.00? We also ordered deep fried fish which looked weird, although the presentation was good but the food tasted bad. The veges had no taste and so as the deep fried fish in the mixed platter. They served the rice way before the mains and we had to wait 10 minutes for the main and by that time, the rice was cold. Not worth the money. would never recommend it to anyone. WHAT A SHAME!

The pros:
- fresh seafood
- nice decor
The cons:
- expensive
- food arrives Luke warm, never hot
- Very poor service, had to practically jump up and down waiving arms around to get the attention of the waiters
- tea never refilled when we open the cap, had to once again jump and waive to get attention
- we order two dish basically the same and the waitress didn’t even think to warn us
- waitress who took our order was not knowledgeable about the restaurant products
- last dish we had was rushed becos we tried to cancel it
It was absolutely disgusting ! Half the vegetable was raw and sauce not evenly spread out

I’m sorry but running a restaurant like urs word will get around and u r not going to have repeat customers.
I would not recommend anyone to go eat there. There are so many nice HK restaurants in Auckland with fantastic service for half the price

Great location, good authentic Chinese food, about time there is a good Chinese restaurant in a waterfront location, I will be back

AWFUL awful awful. Terrible service, too much deep fried food on the menu, unhelpful staff who could hardly speak English, deep fried calamari cold in the middle, drinks delivered to wrong people, took ages to be served. Like an Asian faulty towers but they weren’t rude. Shocking.

There was no service to speak of. Our order was forgotten and the restaurant was not busy, so there was no excuse. The attitude of the staff was that they could not care less. The platters had nothing but cheap fried food – straight out of the box. Will never go back. Such a shame, not good for an Auckland showcase.

We had guests from Melbourne and took them here based on reviews and thinking it would be a fun experience for their children. Why we didn’t just leave when we saw the sad tanks of dead fish I don’t know, but our guests were politely optimistic despite the horrified looks on their childrens’ faces. It was a terrible dining experience all round. Small portions, expensive food, no atmosphere. We sent an apology email to our friends on their return to Melbourne. They graciously said that the trip to Movenpick ice-cream afterwards had erased all bad memories for them, but we still shudder whenever we’re in the area.
