Part-Owner Sam Ansley refers to the Lone Star in Takapuna as being reminiscent of a ‘big old beach house’ due in no small part to the breath-taking view from the restaurant, of the Hauraki Gulf.

This stunning vista renders imbibing in our upstairs bar a most relaxing and pleasurable experience. ‘Hauraki’ means “Wind from the North’, but even on the deck you are well sheltered from any draughty squall or gentle zephyr. We’ve luxurious booths for that seductive drink away from prying eyes. We also offer a private function facility, where you can celebrate that special occasion exclusively.

Prompt and friedly table service, ensuring you always leave with a smile.
Being a chef i frequently rate, food through to service and an overall experience. These guys get 9/10 all round.

My partner and I absolutely adore Lonestar and often choose to go there when we want to go out for dinner. I have been there about eight times in the past 5 years and each visit has been wonderful. The service is fantastic and the food portions are extremely generous. It is difficult to find a restaurant that serves casual American food, but serves it in the most appealing way with delicious flavours. A very exciting casual restaurant indeed! The only criticism I would have is that the restaurant is very noisy – so if you’re hoping for a quiet dine or a serious conversation then it is probably not the best place. They have recently taken a few of my favourite items off the menu which have been replaced with some different items – a bit disappointed so will have to check this out. As long as they keep the banoffie pie I will be happy – it is delicious and they are always happy to put plain cream on top when I request it.

Would give zero stars if an option.
5 diners went on 7th August 2011 for a birthday dinner. Restaurant was not busy.
First two plates arrived. No sign of the other 3. Meanwhile those two were getting cold. About 10mins later the next 2 servings arrived. No excuses offered. We waited again. Eventually the four with dinners decided to start eating lukewarm food. When the four were nearly finished a waitress we managed to call told us there had been a problem in the kitchen and management would offer a free dessert to the very hungry diner. No offer of a snack/garlic bread or something to allay hunger pangs. Still no dinner came. By that time the Very hunger customer had had enough. The other four had finished eating, so he went to find a staff member and told them to cancel the order as he was not interested. Then we got a visit from the young lady on duty to apologise, blaming the kitchen, and offer a gift voucher. what a joke. Yes, screw-ups in the kitchen do occur, but what happened to customer service 101, when there is problem, COMMUNICATE with the customer.
(interesting that there is another bad review on this website for the same night!)We bought takeaway Thai for the hungry customer on our way home. A ruined evening.

First visit to lone star on 7th August and was immediately worried with the over Americanised greetings by the serving staff.

very impressed with the garlic bread, well mini-loaf actually.

Main – I ordered medium-well steak which was medium-rare and the blood soaked into the fries making them soggy and very unpleasant. The coleslaw was unimpressive mushrooms bearable. The eggs; yolk was just right for me and very runny. The whites could have cut the steak!! Very greasy, not a lot of food for the ‘ over-priced’ price.

This place is one to avoid. Wont go back. Far better places for cheaper and tastier food.

Went there Sunday Night and I wasn’t that impressed. The menu is really dated and quite expensive for meat, coleslaw and taties. It’s disappointing that the colt45 never returned to the menu. Its a shame as The Lonestar was a great resturant in CHCH in the 80s-90s but perhaps it really has just lost its way going national. The staff were really friendly and it has a great outlook from the deck. Believe the upstairs bar would make a fab bar if there were no sit down dinners.

We went as my daughter had a birthday voucher for a free main. We were warmly welcomed by the Manager and seated quite quickly. There were a number of children and family groups so quite noisy …
Table steward (Dan?) was friendly, efficient and helpful.
We thought the menu quite pricy but quantity and quality was excellent. The steak was very tender as was the pork lassoo meal – Our Entertainment book coupon was accepted as well as the Gift voucher thus our final bill was very satisfactory. The free Pavlova dessert for the birthday girl and free drink for our 6 yr old Grand daughter made our night complete. Thank you Lone Star Takapuna :-)

Menu very american, very ‘big hunks of meat’ orientated so I think a vegetarian would be disappointed.
Service was efficient but over friendly in that slightly irritating american diner fashion.
Food was ok, nothing to rave about.
When paying I was presented with the correct bill, then another table’s bill for double the amount was charged to my card! The restaurant was able to refund me, but only once I contacted them and they were very offhand about it.
So if you do eat here, check your receipt!

Have been to Lone Star a few times over the years.
Always a good meal.
Its not like its a 5 start restaurant but they have good hearty food.
Very Decent servings, have never finished an entire meal.
Always busy.
Good for a socail gathering.
